I do know it is December, but is it too early to start planning a North Carolina loop? I do plan on being on this one. Right now the boat is winterized. I am also planning on new projects.( 1) changed anchor to Lewmar plow type, (2) change anchor rode and chain. (3 )have water pump on engine changed, ( 4 ) find out why the installed a/ c does not work,(5 ) get generator running, (6) wash and wax :)

Neal,
It is not too early to get the ball rolling for the Mini-loop trip.
Winterized... Does that mean you won't be boating this winter? It was toasty in my boat today...a nice 70 degrees, thanks to Mr. Wallas.

I hope to make the 2014 trip.

All I do in the winter is drain the fresh water tank and remove the drinks. I run her year around without any problems.

Yay - I'm glad somebody is thinking ahead to warmer days. Thanks Neal! Skimmer is up for another loop. We need to start thinking about dates. It's OK with me if we can't coordinate with the Potato Festival this year

we mostly boat in the Chesapeake bay. I do plan to do the trip on its own bottom. No trailer this time. As time gets closer ,we will then try to find dates. Also we do not know when the battlefield locks will be fixed at this time. :D I do plan to meet everyone at the Dismal Swamp Marker. But plans can always change. :)

All,

I am in for the trip this coming spring. Let pick a date and do it.

Dick

I would love to do this trip!

Sounds like some would like to get the date on the calendar. How about starting out May 16 and return on May 19?

Dick

Selfish request is not to do this on the 3rd weekend of any month. We are involved with a charity [Newborns In Need] that meets the 3rd Saturday of each month. We're on the leadership board and do their photos.

If we do this in April I think we can avoid most of the heat and the flying teeth.

If for some reason I don't take the boat again this year, I plan to be at the NC Visitor's Center again for support and pixs; except for the times I noted. So it may be too early for any support stuff, if I drive there, but I suspect that ice cream will again be desired in that situation.

Art

Art,

No problem. We are flexible on the date or month. I hope you can bring the boat this year. It would be great to see all the improvements you have done to your boat.

Dick

My 2 cents ( as the lion says): I'm OK with avoiding 3rd weekend, but think May would be better than April for weather crossing the sound, no?

Others' input?

Skimmer,
You are correct... May has less predicted wind (less small craft advisories) then April. My co-pilot is always game for these trips as long as the weather is favorable.
Last year we did have a front roll through as we were making that voyage and we dealt with it okay. Tying up to the marina in Elizabeth City was a real challenge to the point of being almost unsafe. The fortunate part of the sound crossing was that we had quartering seas.
But the previous month had more periods of higher winds...
My vote is for a May trip...sorry Art.
Steve

Here's what the marina in Elizabeth City was like in May last year...

Skimmer,
Thanks for sending a note to Lambs Marina for a possible mooring. Their facility will certainly get us away from the roller-coaster ride that we had previously at Pelican Marina.
Dick had mentioned leaving on May 16th and returning on the 19th. This is fine by me, though it will most likely correspond with the E-City Potato Festival.
Others please chime in as we need to go ahead and get our dates and mooring arrangements confirmed.

I vote for May 16th - 19th. How often do you get to attend a potato festival?

May 16-19 sounds good. Delfin will be ready to cruise. I will have the vacation time and the funds. We need to get this on the cruise thread so maybe we will have many more boats. Maybe we will also miss the sunbirds. (people who take their boats south for the winter.) :D Neal

May 16 to 19 is still good for us, however I hate to leave Art out of the event. He has been a great supporter for this activity meeting us at the NC Visitor Center providing refreshments and taking some excellent pictures. One thought I did have if we did the loop clockwise we would be at the Visitor Center on Sunday. Besides we are getting wound up fairly tight going the same way each year. This might alleviate some of our tension.

Any thoughts?

I also like the idea of stopping at Lambs Marina. Taxis are available to take us into Elizabeth City.

Dick

Dick,
I think the idea of going in reverse order would be a neat way to make a change to our routine. In a few days, I'll ask for an event sign up, so we can firm up our intended trip.

Please don't let me affect the dates. If all goes well I will see you all at the NC Visitor's Center, whether via boat or car.

Have done that loop (2003) but in the Fall, a few months after ISABEL, just after the Dismal Swamp Canal opened up. In May, going clockwise much of the boat traffic will be returning Northward from the south. When we did it in the fall going CCW, the traffic was going the other way and we had the locks to ourselves, it was a piece of cake and we didn't have to raft up with others. Also, the bridges that open for the big guys, will be crowded south of the bridges, and as you go through, you can wave without waiting for them to open. (Neil, don't forget to lower the antennas! )

We probably cannot go this year but just in case, a clockwise trip this year would be my vote if we could. Have fun!
