I concur with Tim. We have to go through Deception virtually every time we go North or West. BTW Swinomish channel (the alternate) is getting very silted both at the North and SW Ends. We measured 5 ft at a +1 tide state at the Dugwalla entrance a couple of weeks back and that was dead on the marker line.
Last Thursday was a classic example of what Tim was saying.
For the skiers amongst you, imagine a field of very large moving moguls with whirlpools as a bonus.
The influence of the pass extends nearly a mile offshore on a major ebb, so the best bet is usually to hang a shrp right and go inside Deception Island. Less kelp and rocks that way.
90% of the time its simply a fun ride and your biggest problem is some dufus in a large Chlorox bottle leaving a big wake which reflects off the walls and adds to the chop.
