05/14 - 05/16 - Friday Harbor

Cornet Bay has safe and ample parking; it is a state park and is regularly patrolled. Cost is $10/night and it is very rare to find everything full. There are six lanes with good docks and an offshore dock suitable for overnight mooring. 5 of the 6 ramps are in very good condition, the one closest to Deception pass is adequate on the bridge side, it is not as well surfaced as the others. A few years ago they put new rubber panels to protect boats on every lane but in their infinite wisdom they put them on with carriage bolts and left the heads proud. They will ding up your gelcoat unless you have fenders out. We plan to launch from Cornet Bay Thursday evening sixish. There should be about 8ft of water then. I have retrieved at minus tides and launched at zero tides there with no trouble; it is our regular launch point.

Thanks, Barry. I'm gonna look at tides etc and make a decision. It'd be nice to have a little longer cruise, but we need to get back early on Sunday; Meredith and I both work on Monday and we're expecting our second grandchild at ANY moment! :thup

Well talked to Don today and they can not leave until Saturday morning. they did launch at twin bridges yesterday and motor up to Lummi island and back. Getting to learn there gps and maps. I think they will still make it on Saturday just fine. I will see you all there

Slack is near 10:00 am, and maximum flood is about 7 knots at 1330 or so.

I'll try to be in Cornet Bay no later than 11:00 am. And then I'll just play in the passes for a while and plan on crossing Rosario Strait starting at noon.

Any boats that want to try Canoe Pass are free to call me up on channel 16 or 68, and I'll either lead you through or station Two Lucky Fish on the other side of the pass to verify no traffic for you.

OK,

I've just done the final contacts with our hosts in Friday Harbor. They are welcoming and helpful as usual. We have 43 boats signed up and the weather gods seem favorable. West Marine is donating some items to the trivia giveaway contest plus they are hosting a coffee and donuts "party" for us at the store from 9-11 AM on Saturday. Identify yourself as a C-Brat and you will get a discount on purchases. I have invited the store manager, Kurt, and his wife, to join us for the potluck. The port has given us all of the inside of "H" dock plus spaces on the side of "G" dock facing "H" dock out to about number 18-19. You will find a marina layout map here:
http://portfridayharbor.org/fridayharbo ... ayout-map/ When you approach FH you will see two long breakwaters. The one on the left is where the customs dock is. On the right you will see a small kiosk at the end of the breakwater. The marina entrance is just past that kiosk between the two breakwaters. Go to the right along the inside of the breakwater and you will see "G" and "H" docks. When you call in to the harbormaster identify yourself as being with the C-Dory group and they will direct you to our area. Usually we fill up "H" dock first. I and a few others will be there Thursday evening and will be available to help you find a slip and get moored. And....TAH DAH, we are getting about a 30% break on moorage fees (they like having us there) so when you go to register be sure to tell them you are with the C-Dory group.

Friday night's dinner is set up at Downrigger's restaurant and will begin at 1730. They will have a special C-Brat menu. When you arrive tell them you are a C-dory person and they will direct you to our area. Breakfast on Sunday is loose but a group usually meets at Downrigger's. Otherwise, there's a lot to do in FH and lots of good restaurants.

David McKibben (Anna Leigh) and I will be doing vessel safety checks. I'll have a signup sheet at C-Cakes. Don't forget to bring something for the trivia contest and a table if you have one.

Looking forward to seeing you

I'll be departing Bellingham on Friday most likely between 1100HRS and 1300 HRS. I'll be happy to share my cell phone number with anyone that anticipates a departure around that time and wants to join me. Send me a PM if you'd like my cell phone number.
I'll reiterate my reasons for launching at Bellingham.
1. A ramp launch (not a sling launch).
2. A nominal launch fee. (Unless it has been changed recently...$5.00).
3. No fee for parking trailer and tow vehicle.
4. Water hydrants are available for rinsing off the trailer after launching and rinsing off the boat and trailer after retrieving.

For a bunch of reasons, Sea Pal will be staying home this gathering. BUT we can't stand to miss out on the fun AND not see our buddies so we'll be driving up from Bend for the CBGT !!!
See everyone soon,
Bob and Betsy

If any C-brats are interested in a lift from Cornet Bay to Friday Harbor and back on Sunday, I have room in the Tomcat for one or two and would welcome the company. I will be leaving Mt. Vernon to launch at Cornet Bay Friday in the AM and coming back Sunday morning. My first mate cannot make it until Saturday so I will run back on Sat to get her. Anyone local or out of town is welcome. Please PM if you are interested and I will give you my phone number. This will be the first outing in the new boat after the initial sea trial. It should be fun and interesting to see how the performance is with the new props.

Regards,

I googled the Squalicum Harbor Boat Launch (Port of Bellingham) today and the information on their web site stated that the launch fee is still $5.00.

OK, last night I got the prop changed back from the Lake Powell prop to the sea level prop, and greased all four hubs - took three tubes of grease, but I got 'er done this time. Believe me, that puppy will never roll again without greasing the dang hubs, loosing a hub on the road once is plenty enough for me.

SO...it looks very likely that we will be on the road tomorrow after work, spend the night at Birch Bay, and then head for Friday Harbor on Friday some time before noon. Still have to dress the S-1000 autopilot installation and put a few things away, but will plan on doing that at Birch Bay.

Won't have autopilot on the trip over, last thing we need to do is correctly wire the S-1000 to the C-80 for the NMEA signal, but I am sure there will be ample folks who can show me which wires go where...

Hot to get on the water again!

P.S - Roger, we still have ample name badges from prior gatherings, so we are not requesting new ones!

An unexpected side effect of my recent hospitalization and recovery is how tired the massive infusions of antibiotics are making me. So, much as I would like to, I will not be coming to FH. All are welcome to stop by the house and visit if your travels take you through Anacortes. I'll be in Seattle on Friday to see the surgeon, but otherwise will be close to home. PM me if you decide to do this.

Warren

P.S. Please make sure Bob & Betsy Burks know I am not coming.

Pat, let's look at what you've got. You have the cable and connector (for the C-80 end) that you need? It SHOULD be pretty straightforward...My Raymarine autopilot is connected to the C-80 using the SeaTalk port, but the autopilot connections are clearly labelled:

Obviously, it's nice if you're using the right Raymarine cable, because then the color-coding all matches!

Sorry to hear that, Warren! We'll see you next time, eh?

I think we still have ours from last year, but the kids like getting new ones! Of course, Arwen will immediately refuse to wear it. Your call, Roger. If you're short on time, you can skip Two Lucky Fish. If they're already done, bring 'em up. :-)

Wow Tim, nice and neat wiring. I helped Pat with the install a couple of weeks ago and we couldn't get the wiring right. I think I was just tired a cold and wasn't thinking straight.

When I got back home, I started thinking about it and I know what the problem is. We tried using the NMEA Spur to connect to the SeaTalk port rather than using the SeaTalk wires. Duh!!! I'm confident we'll get it right this weekend.

Pat, I'll be happy to finish the job with you in Friday Harbor, provided I make it up there. Our plans are still up in the air.

Peter

Pat i can help you wtih that if peter is not coming , which would be a shame. Peter what could be more important then the first gathering of the year??

pat what day are you leaving. may be able to stop at my house and I could take a look before you leave??

Thanks, Tom, but not leaving until Thursday after work, will be making a bee-line straight for Birch Bay. I's sure we will get it squared away at FH one way or another, and we have done without it OK for the last five years, one more voyage without autopilot should not be a problem!
