05/13 - 05/16 - Friday Harbor CBGT 2021

Paul and Tim (and others)

Visiting other boats is a common and favored practice at the FH-CBGT. This (Covid) year, that practice will be (probably) much more irregular, and we will have to yield to the preference of each boat owners will. Some may be more open to having anyone come aboard, others my limit that to those who have been fully vaccinated, and there may be some who are uncomfortable to having anyone other then themselves on board.

It is, (to state the obvious), proper to only enter a vessel with permission of the vessel owner/crew.

I am thinking about the upcoming CBGT at Friday Harbor. It IS just around the corner and there are several things that need to be address for our group.

*>We would normally have a pot luck.

*>Normally we would have a communal breakfast on Saturday morning.

*>We would normally have an evening dinner out as a fairly large group.

*>We would normally have the Coast Guard Auxiliary Officers doing Vessel Safety Inspections.

*>We would normally have considerable visitation, on our boats and at our docks.

*>We would normally not need to be wearing masks or keeping respectful distances.

This is a not normal year, even though there are those who feel that there is way too much hullabaloo over a little bug, there are still concerns about Covid virus contacts.

I will be really honest here and say that I am concerned about coordinating, (calling together), a group that is as wide spread as we are, geographically, generationally, experientially, and yes honestly politically. In no way do I think the virus is political, NOR, do I consent in anyway, politicizing the virus or the medical responses necessary to treat the illnesses or prevent it’s spread. Too many of us are acutely aware of loved ones lost to Covid, and I doubt anyone wants to be responsible for any further loss. To that end, I will be checking with the Port of Friday Harbor for any Current Health Department announcements weekly. For now this is what is on the Port web site.

UPDATES FOR CUSTOMERS & GUESTS
Woohoo! Per our County’s Health Office, we are now open at 100% capacity. We are excited to see you, but we ask that you please continue to practice social distancing, sanitizing, and washing your hands. Don’t forget your face coverings! It is a state requirement that they be worn in public spaces. We look forward to safely seeing you.

We are all in this together and the Port is grateful to all of you for our continued success! See you soon at the Port of Friday Harbor, where Friday begins.”

The onus is on us, (C-BRAT community), to be compliant with their “ask”.

Personal note: Social Distancing on an 8 foot wide dock may be complicated or tricky.

For some, they will have had Covid vaccinations. For others they may not have. For some, there will be different levels of comfort in the various situations. For others there may be different levels of concerns. We need to be mindful of that and respect others.

I know C-BRATS is a great group and we are all friends with so much in common, so I hope that we can continue in that vein. I am hearing that the park docks are already full in many places. Looks like we may be anchoring a plenty.

We will be needing a signup sheet for information for the Port of Friday Harbor.
This will have some more information on it than we have had to provide before.
Gary and Colleen (DayBreak), will be doing the Spreadsheet generation, and will post what info they have. It will be up to each of us to PM them with the appropriate info needed to complete the form prior to the CBGT.

The Information needed will be:

Boat Name
Boat length
Boat Home Port
Captain
Names of each additional on board
Arrival Date
Departure Date
Requesting a Vessel Safety Inspection

You may copy this list and then PM that to them at: DayBreak

Thank you for your cooperation.

Two Lucky Fish here. We're coming back to Friday Harbor! Been a couple years. My dad passed away two years ago in the spring, and the funeral conflicted with Friday Harbor. Last year was 2020...nuff said.

Anyway, it'll just be me and a kid or two. And contingent on all the elements Harvey has mentioned. Harvey, I fully support your approach to this event and the various tricky decisions.

T'were I in your position, I would probably draw the lines like this:
  • No Friday restaurant dinner for the whole group. Small groups are free to make their own arrangements, obviously.
  • Saturday breakfast on the dock is fine, with attention to safe food handling.
  • CG Aux vessel inspections are fine, with masks.
  • Boat visits (I need to look at some nav installations!) are fine, with masks.
  • Saturday dinner on the dock is fine, but no potluck. Strictly bring your own.

Hey Harvey, You have done, and are doing, a wonderful job with this CBGT. Not to worry, you have covered every base taking into consideration the circumstances. Everyone will have a great time, you have my word.

Hi everyone. Gary here (DayBreak).

Colleen is doing the first draft of the sign-up spreadsheet for our Friday Harbor C-Brats get together. Thank you to all who have already sent us the information requested by Harvey. If you plan to attend this years FH event with a boat, please PM Colleen/Gary (DayBreak) the needed information ASAP so we can send it to the Port in a timely manner.

Thank you, looking forward to this 2021 event coming in just a few weeks.
Gary.

This years increase of early season high volume use of the San Juan Island’s State Parks, social restraints at the Marina & other areas due to COVID & our deciding not to make the Gathering a jumping off point to Alaska has led me to change my mind on attending this years Friday Harbor Gathering. Lake Powell seems a better choice again this year for our spring boating. Next year, We hope to be in SE Alaska again out of Skagway & perhaps in 2023 will make Friday Harbor, followed by a direct cruise north to Alaska. I wish all who do attend this Gathering a wonderful time. I’ve removed us from the event sign up list.

Jay

It would sure be nice if we have the kind of weather we've been having in the Pacific Northwest for what will be about eight days. August-like, rain-free reliability, with oodles of sun yet not oppressively hot.

Harvey, I'll join the thank you chorus of appreciation high-fiving you for your time and energy, and the structure and communication you've fostered to make our annual event less confusing and more fun for everyone. Thanks, too, to Gary and Colleen.

Tim, I'm sure those who know you and your family will be delighted to see you again. My memory of your kids is of dedicated, lifejacket-clad, fisher-tots talking and extending short, colorful poles off the dock's edge. And always, a mini-pale filled with saltwater, squirming bullheads, maybe a small starfish, and other captives.

Jay, sorry to hear you can't make it. But I'll be deploying my fold-a-chair at your boat slip, setting a spell, and seeking tales of Southeastern perhaps in 2023 if you're out this way. And to everyone else, I look forward to seeing and chatting with you.

Good Morning. I just received an update from Gary and Colleen (DayBreak), who are working on the data sheet for the FH-CBGT.

As mentioned earlier, we need to do a bit of an extra notification to the Port of Friday Harbor, so . . .
here is what Gary just sent me . . .

Thanks for the information Harvey. Colleen says that with your information, 12 boat captains have sent in information. One captain that plans to attend has not officially signed up on the C-Brats 'Event Signups'. This makes people groups attending the event a total of 36 participants (34 with boats and 2 w/o).

So that tells me there are 24 boats (Captains) who still have some homework to do. YES, It's easy, Please do it soon.

1. Copy the wanted Info list from here:

The Information needed will be:

Boat Name
Boat length
Boat Home Port
Captain
Names of each additional on board
Arrival Date
Departure Date
Requesting a Vessel Safety Inspection

2. Add the appropriate information.
3. PM that info message to Gary and Colleen at DayBreak.

Thanks for taking care of business.

Requested info just PM'd!

Thank you Pat. Just sent you a PM.

Thank you to everyone that has sent in the information so far. 17 boat Captains have now reported and we still have 17 more to go. There are 34 boats (plus 3 other attendees not staying overnight on boats) so far that plan to be at this event. Looks like H-Dock will be completely full with C-Dory boats. How exciting a time this will be!

Hi All, I'm looking forward to meeting you in Friday Harbor. I have a question for the locals. I'm bringing up my boat from Oregon, do I need to purchase a Washington State invasive species permit?

Checked into it further and just bought my Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Prevention Permit for Washington. It is required for out of state boaters. Bought on line and the cost was $24 which included a $2 processing fee. Now I am ready for FH legally. :D
