04/20 - 04/30 - Lake Powell

Looks like there is interest in some Lake Powell cruising in April. We are hoping to be out on the lake in April also, so perhaps can put together a little Gathering for that time if there is sufficient interest. Maybe sometime during the first two weeks, before Easter?

Lake Powell is low, although up from last year and still rising. Low water (in our opinion) only makes the Lake more appealing -- there's more geology to see.

Who's up for a little Powell cruising?

Changed event dates to current so more folks can make it.

More geology...more moqui steps! Early April sounds good to me. I'll be there. Now to lay in a large supply of hot dogs....

El and Bill and Chris,

We are already planning to do some Lake Powell cruising in March and April. Would love to get together with all of you. What marina do you propose starting out from? We usually go to Bullfrog because it's about 175 miles from home, but would be willing to start at Wahweap or meet somewhere on the lake. We agree that before Easter is best. Beat the crowds. We know the middle and upper parts of the lake, but have never cruised the lower end. Set some dates, let's see what response we get.

Brent and Dixie...I usually launch at Wahweap because it's closest to San Diego. Almost always range uplake to at least Bullfrog/Hall's...if not further. So no problem meeting anywhere on the lake. Because of my work schedule I like to launch on a Thursday...say 3/30 or 4/6 and would pull out on 4/8 or 4/15. So let's see what the response is.

We're sort of looking at an Aprilish timeframe also. We expect to be back in AZ by about March, so April would be good for Powell.

Pencil us in. We'll launch at Wahweap.

Patty here. Talk is cheap (free, actually), so I thought I'd hang a feeler out here for C-Brats who'd love to cruise Lake Powell with the people who can actually launch their C-Dorys, but who themselves cannot get their boats there. Renting a houseboat is an option and if shared, extremely economical. Again, just tossing this thought out to see if it gets any interested nibblers.

Hi,

Either of the dates mentioned should work for us. We can come to Wahweap, need to learn about the So. end of the lake. Will watch this thread, maybe enough interest will develope to have it listed as an event.

April 6th until whenever ... Launch at Wahweap looks great for us.

Those who can't make that earlier date, or prefer to launch at Bullfrog, no problem. We'll work out who's where and when and can meet up at an anchorage easily enough -- not too far to the Escalante or Oak Creek for a meeting place, if we're not together at the launch.

How does that sound?

Pat -- great idea to rent a houseboat. For those who see too long a trailer-drive to Lake Powell, fly (or drive sans boat) down to Page or Vegas or wherever. We should be able to work up connections to pick folks up at the airport at Vegas and drive over with some coming up from CA-NV or easy to meet you at Page, next door to Powell.

We have been out on a houseboat on Powell with our family and it is a great vacation -- if you share a boat with other couples, the cost is reasonable, there are cooking and living facilities on board, and for those who wish, it is easy to camp ashore using the houseboat for transportation and facilities.

The houseboat could tie off and the C-Dorys provide transport up into the canyons -- sorta like Momma duck with all the little ones. We have done that, also, in days of yore and it works great.

So -- there could be those of us on our own C-Dorys and those who are on the houseboat -- what a party!! Now, if we had Terry (and Bill Parolari) there with some Red Cat and Pat (and Patty) and David (and Kate) with some Snoqualmie Falls brew and a gang of others with good cheer, we'll have a great time in the canyons.

Just to bring the discussion of the Lake Powell cruise back up to the top of the deck -- we are still figuring on some Powell cruising from April 6 to 15, meeting up with others at any intermediate dates. It there still seems to be enough interest, perhaps this could be put up as an official Lake Powell Gathering, with a sign-up sheet? We would be gload to serve as the co-ordinators.

OK E&B - this is on the calendar, a signup list is in place, and you have been named as Cruise Directors. But tell me, really, what do you guys know about cruising?

Well, talk is indeed cheap, and we can't do it this year because of other committments, but the houseboat idea really has appeal to us. I doubt if we'll ever get Crescent Girl to Arizona, but we've rented a small runabout in years past and I'd love to do the Lake with the pros. Put us down for next year if you do it again.

Pat and Patty, we'd love to share a barge w/ you guys!

Looks like the official dates for Powell will slip a bit...to April 20 thru April 29. Seems certain folks will be in a different hemisphere...so they'll need some time to get back to the hemisphere that contains Lake Powell. When El & Bill get where they have an internet connection they will edit the dates on the signup list...unless one of the other admins is able to do it. This work out OK for folks planning on attending?

The new date will work fine for us.

Probably not a good idea to not be returning to Wahweap on 4/16 (Easter) anyway, as things may be a tad congested.

Lake Powell is still -108 feet below max pool; swell, now we get to do the Narrows again (not one of my favorite things...). Oh well...Powell is worth it.

If you haven't looked at the floating marina just east of Antelope Point on GoogleEarth, check it out. It almost blocks the Narrows.

The floating "marina" is at:
036 degrees, 57 minutes, 56.85 sec N
111 degrees, 25 minutes, 44.61 sec W

We will probable put in at Bullfrog and come down lake to meet the group. Will watch the sign up for the dates. We will go to Powel in March and then again in April. Anxious to get the TC255 back in he water. Boating and fishing every day here in Texas, but it will be nice to get home for a while.

We're back to CO and the computer -- ah, yes, the hemispheres -- good to get waypoints into the right one, eh? Only a difference in longitude from 10W to 110W for our travels this spring.

Looks like the dates of April 20 to April 30 will work for all those who have signed up. So be it. Those who wish to be on the water before or after, of course, have that option and hopefully will join for the social activities. We will figure on a launch at Wahweap (for those who wish that location; others can launch at Bullfrog or whatever, and we can join up on the lake). There is a good federal campground at Wahweap for those who might want to camp before or after the cruise. the night of the 20th we will probably anchor at Lone Rock, across the bay from the launch ramp. Those arriving late or not until the 21st will be able to join up as those on anchor depart Lone Rock and cruise by the launch ramp on the 21st. We can stay in touch via cell phone or ch. 16 near Wahweap. Details of the trip itself will be weather dependent and shared by marine radio and discussions while there. There will be a few "must see" places to visit -- Rainbow Bridge and the Escalante for sure.

Arguably, this is perhaps the most beautiful and dramatic canyonland cruising on earth -- and one of the finest cruising grounds anywhere. It is, also, one of the finest places to observe geology -- a true Jurassic Park that you can visit on a cruising boat.

Yep, a very pretty place ... with miles and miles of naked rocks.

...and we wondered why a Professor of Geology likes the place so much.

DUH ! ! ! !
