04/15 - 04/16 - Cathlamet, WA

Darn Tom, I was looking forward to meeting you.
I gotta say that this is the 1st year I thought fishing might be decent at this gig, at least I hope so.

Tom,

That's too bad - I guess I'll see you at Lopez. Without "rescue Tom" at Cathlamet, the rest of us willl have to be sure to keep our boats afloat and our arses in them!

Roger

Does anyone have any opinions about security/usability of the Westport ramp? It is sort of right across the river from Cathlamet.

Are there showers at the Cathlamet marina?

Well, I'm bummed. I've got to go to Montana for a meeting regarding a possible grant and had to book a flight out of SeaTac for Sun AM. I can't really justify the 4+ hr trip each direction towing the boat just to spend Fri night and Saturday there especially when I have to stay in MT until Wed AM. I'm gonna have to cancel...

Of course you're bummed. Read your own durn name. No since bumming out the rest of us. Yeah, what B~C said.

darn Roger, I had just decided to take you up on the offer for a beer :beer at Cathlamet. Now what am I going to do? :sad

PS Good luck on your grant.

from WDFW:

Lower Columbia from the I-5 Bridge downstream - Last week we sampled 2,025 salmonid anglers (including 825 boats) with 274 chinook and 4 steelhead. Boat anglers averaged a chinook kept/released per every 7 rods. Best catches were in the Cathlamet area with a chinook per every 4.1 rods when including fish released. Vancouver to the mouth of the Cowlitz slowed late last week when mainstem flows increased and the river became more turbid. Thursday through Sunday sampling showed a chinook per every 25 rods in that area. Bank angling remains slow.

Columbia River Compact agencies of Oregon and Washington met via phone today:

"Effective 11:59PM Thursday April 13 the mainstem Columbia River from the mouth at Buoy 10 upstream to the I-5 Bridge will be closed to angling for salmon, steelhead and shad through May 15."

Sucks, eh? I think we're going to head to the Willamette this weekend and see if we can't get one of those elusive lil buggers -- that way we only have to drive 1 1/2 hours for a boat test instead of 3. Sorry we won't make the gathering...still trying to get it together and get all our gear in and reinstalled. Sure is perdy:)

Aww, I think you folks never wanted to go in the first place. First you come up with weak story about your boat leaking and now you quote some Fish & game gibberish about fishing being closed :) enjoy your new boat and good luck on the long awaited fishing trip, you've earned it

We're still going. Now Tiffany has to go to her cheerleading practice on Friday evening, so her and grandma will drive up Saturday morning. I have Friday off, and Tiff gets to do something cool, so G'ma is going to see about having Jamie skip school and go with me Friday morning up the river. We'll be wandering the docks begging for food.

Is it time to head for an Alaskan gathering? :smilep We can't wait for retirement to roll around so we can go where we can fish! Ken, take a couple extra granola bars for Mike, wouldya? :D

Isn't this exactly what they did last year? -- when fishing began to get better, they shut it down...I think til May 15 last year too...when the fish have already made their trek out of our fishing range...go figure! I think there's some tournament this weekend too, so the Willamette might be a boating zoo -- may just go sturgeon fishing...I gotta wet a line tho -- I'm goin nuts not fishing!

when is the backwater tour to Astoria going to be?
Potluck dinner Saturday night?

I'm jazzed, fish or not it's going to be a kick to look at some boats, get some new ideas and trade some lies....actually, with salmon season closed, the port will be a much nice place to visit

You gotta be kiddin! 7 days you can keep? Hows come they only allow us Thursday, Friday and Saturday up this part of the river? Who's makin these rules for the daggone river?? :?: :)

We're tryna decide what the heck to do...sure would be great to see everyone again...Larry n Mike, ditto what Ken asked -- "there any sturgeon holes around Cathlamet?" I think I've still got a couple packages of really O-L-D smelt in the freezer....and I think there might even be a package of squid...hmmmmm

 Yes there are sturgeon holes here in this area. Probably better than what you have upriver. :wink

Yes there is potluck Saturday evening. Whenever someone hollers that they're hungry, it's time to eat. Usually it's about 5:00 p.m.

ChuckPacific is leading the backwater cruise, I don't know what time he plans on leaving.

The Happy Bus (trolley) is going to be in the marina parking lot at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning to take us to a pancake, egg and sausage breakfast at the County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa (6 miles away through the game reserve) if we want. The breakfast is being served between 8 and 11:00 a.m. Adults $4.50.. Kids 4-10 is $2.50. Age 3 and under is $1.00. There is also an easter egg hunt later after the breakfast.
