04/01 - 04/03 Cathlamet, WA

Nice fish Mike, Larry.
Did you guys get any weight for those two?? Looks like I may have to get down that way again soon. All this rain just might bring more fish into the river. Later Lyle

Lyle

We dropped the first line it at 7:00 am, first fish on at 7:15 weighed 8 lbs. Second fish at 8:50, weighed 12 lbs. Back to the dock at noon. The forecast 20 -30 mph winds were only about 10 - 15 mph winds. See ya soon.

If I can't get my boat there (insert expletive about trailer here) would anyone have room for me to fish with them?
I think I can still get my motor home down the road so I would have a place to stay. If Junior could have a seat too the wife would be delighted to get rid of us for a weekend.
I am still trying to work out the trailer issue but at this point plan A is just not going to happen in time for this event.
I could likely find some special ice to keep the hosts beverages cold  . Ask anyone who has tried my special ice... it is really special. :D

I really don't want to miss this event again this year.

Tom, that would be great. Jesse is 12 and also always looking for a new friend. Careful... he may be telling stories that cause you to go Halibut and Tuna fishing with us this coming year.
I like the story behind this pic...

How many nights are you staying?

We plan to drive down late friday night and leave sunday afternoon. we are looking for a safe place to leave the boat for the week so i can come back the next weekend to fish some more. my grand father may be coming to fish on sunday but i dont know yet. I may or may not have room sunday for you to fish. I may have to leave the boat at my grandfathers place in vancouver for the week. How far is that from the marina? Mr fisherman what time are the tides this coming weekend? We will need to talk later this week by phone to get everything set.

Many of you remember Art Lindsay the owner/president of Stone Wolf vineyards. He and Chuckpacific attended the impromptu Warrenton gathering last fall when El & Bill completed their Columbia River cruise. Art brought a mixed case of his delicious Stone Wolf wines for our enjoyment. And enjoy it we did indeed!
Anyhow, I just received word that Art and Chuckpacific regrettably won't be able to attend the Cathlamet gathering. HOWEVER, Art is shipping a case of Stone Wolf wine to Jackie at the marina office which should be there Friday or Saturday.
 This is the good stuff! Anyone care to taste some wine fit for royalty?

Larry,
Ya sure youbetcha on the Stonewolf. I have only tried it once before but remember it as being very good! I just about finished putting the boat back together and barring any last minute problems, I plan to come over on Wednesday and spend a couple of days ahead of the CBGT. I have never boated in that part of the Columbia and look forward to exploring the area and even a little fishing. Can't wait.

A note of caution for those going to the Cathlamet get-together. The marina is located on a channel between Puget Is. and the Washington side of the big C. The eastern (up-river) end of the channel has some shallow areas, local knowledge is helpful. I suggest entering from down-river (west end).
Last time there, the harbor master had a rough chart showing the way through the east end.
Hope to see you all Sat.

Is this a great group, or what??

Thanks, Art and Chuck! Sheesh, we already told that one fine gentleman that no gifts were needed to join in, and now we have you guys sending gifts without even being able to make it. You're good people.

Is the pope Catholic?!! That sounds FABULOUS. I plan to bring a bottle or two (or 3,4,...) of red from my local stock to share. I haven't had any Stone Wolf yet.

Hi,

As this trip gets nearer and the more I read the ifish forums on the Springer fishery, I am getting a little nervous about the prospect of anchoring up in what sounds like a mall parking lot at Christmas time full of aluminum sleds.

It doesn't take much wind to blow a 22' C-Dory off course - add current and boat control is less than ideal.

For those who have fished the Cathlamet area before and plan to fish this weekend, what is the proposed plan? With a Saturday morning high tide at about 7:30, I assume that "hog-lining" is the typical scenario. Is this going to be the crowded and potentially risky situation I'm beginning to envision? Will it be a zig-zag affair trying to get to and from the marina?

Is a float arrangement required or can one just drop anchor? Is the current so strong in this area that it requires following a fish? Is this fishery safe for small children?

I'm beginning to picture Blue Creek at the Cowlitz hatchery...

Thanks,

Dan

Dan, I was waiting for Helen-O Larry to respond as he is the official Cathlamet expert, but he's probably FISHIN so I will make a few comments in an effort to to reassure you.

This fishery is not a Blue Creek affair for sure although it may appear so rafted up at the marina Saturday night. You can anchor up on the ebb or troll. Around Cathlamet, I'd say it's about a 50-50 split. There's tons of room, so hooking up to a hog line is not necessary. Actually, the most boats I've seen lined up in any one line may be four or five and not very tight at that. The rest of the boats are spread out.

The current is usually relatively tame in my opinion not requiring you release from anchor. However, should you hook into one of those big five year fish or a sea lion encounter is imminent, you may wish that you could. Two of the smaller wind socks or sea anchors (I cant remember the official name) secured to each aft cleat is probably in order to keep the boat from swaying. If the wind starts to blow, some of the guys put their kickers in reverse also but I'm usually out of there if it starts to blow that bad.

Hope this helps. Tim

Dan

The current in this area typically runs about 4 mph at peak. Not like the swifter upstream Bonniville currents or even the tides I've seen on puget sound.
I refuse to go near a hogline, there's no need to. Many kwikfishers anchor in a staggered formation so that there is no need to break free from anchor to chase a hooked fish. The fish are spread out enough to allow this.
I troll in Clifton Channel 99% of the time regardless of the tide, it just seems to produce better for me.
My biggest concern for the weekend is that the Columbia will be running muddy with more than normal debris from all the rain we've been receiving. Muddy water could hamper the fishing.

Hi Larry,

Looking for a report on the ferry. I've been fighting a cold ever since we got back from central Oregon Sunday and I'm not sure I want to fight weather in the lower river as well. If I make it most likely I'd tow up. I'll base my discission on your good information.

Thanks, Tim

Thanks Tim and Larry,

I feel much better now. I've fished the Columbia; Astoria Bridge to Buoy 10 many times. But never so far upstream as Cathlamet. Totally unfamiliar with the area. I've been following the hogline thread on ifish.net and was ready to canx on the coming weekend. I don't need the stress of 500 jet sleds.

With the tide change at around 7:30 AM on Saturday, I had just assumed that anchoring up with kwikfish was the only option. I'll have a wife on board who has never caught a fish so this method may give us a more easily handled situation should we hook up. Not having to manage the kicker, net and child and make sure my rod doesn't depart her hands is a bit much. Anchoring could take a lot of the stress out of that.

Friday though, I will likely arrive around noon and this might mean trolling.

Looking forward to our first C-Dory gathering - again.

Thanks again,

Dan

The ferry is in normal operation. It departs Westport 15 minutes after the hour and departs Puget Island on the hour, 5 am to 10 pm daily.

Dan

If you've fished bouy 10 you're a battle hardened veteran. This will be a piece of cake. :thup

You can fish with me but I will not be there until friday night. how old is your son. James is 14 and is always looking for a freind at these events.

Tom, As much as I appreciate your offer, I am afraid if I do make it down it will just be a quick trip to socialize.

Not much chance of my boat making it and at this rate I will be lucky to get there at all.

That Sea Lion repelent is powerful stuff.

I hope you are all able to hoist a few for those of us unable to make it.
