04/01 - 04/03 Cathlamet, WA

Ok Larry, Ok Lyle. Knock it off!!! What's a guy to think about two guys hanging out all day fishing while the rest of us are out working. And if not telling us about it was bad enough you had to add Pic's. That's just mean :) Save a couple for me. If all goes well I might be down SOON!

Hi,

Couple questions;

I think this was brought up before but I couldn't quickly locate the thread - the WA State regulations list no Salmon season during the dates of this gathering. In fact, on page 70 it indicates Jan 1 - Mar 31.

Hooks: Are multiple treble hooks allowed in this area? Are barbed hooks allowed? For example; a Kwikfish out of the package has two barbed, treble hooks. Not smart enough to translate the regs - in fact, I could not even find a mention of hooks for this area. Hook requirements are identified for the mouth of the Columbia but no other.

Thanks,

Dan

The season is quota driven. You won't find it in the regs. They will shut down the season when the quota is met.

Treble hooks? Yes, they're legal here.

Barbed hooks? Yes, they're also legal here.

New rule is that you cannot bring a native (non finclipped) fish onboard. You net it and release it from the net while holding it over the side of the boat. Not always and easy task.

See ya there!

I have seen the seals on the big -c going after salmon on the hook. Its really scarey how far the seals are willing to go to eat your fish instead of getting there own. I will be bringing a sling shot now that i have read that article. Remeber that in B.M. the indians controlled the population by eating critters. (b.m.= before mcdonalds)

The seals are probably saying "It's really scary how far those 2-leggers are willing to go to eat OUR salmon.... :)

roger- its good to be at the top of the food chain or in the words of mel brooks " its good to be the king" but my point would be that with out control of the numbers of predators in the river system we could be looking at the seals eating them selves out of house and home. but them again why do we allow netting of salmon in rivers when farm raised fish is much cheaper? I only eat what i catch and eat everything i catch.

I'm bringing my big trolling rod and a Penn 130 International. Think I could land one of those trophy seals? I've heard they taste like chicken.

last year i saw a seal with 6 kwik fish lures hanging out of his mouth. you would think he would have got he idea after 3. So how do you get a killer whale to swim up a river?

p.s. check out the national G artical on killer whales this month. the pics are just great.

Larry,
A quick question for the resident expert: I'm packing fishing gear for this trip and wondering if there will be any use for the downriggers? From what you have posted so far, it seems they would be of no use? I have done a lot of ocean trolling for salmon, but this will be my first experience with river fishing. Looking forward to the trip, thanks for getting this together.

I have been serious about the C-Dory since looking them over closely at the Portland show. Have seen several near-new 22's pop on the market and then sell in days, before I could really get my act together. There are none over here in my community that I know about (I'm at Mile 347 -- figure it out).

Do you suppose if I showed up out there at Cathlamet Saturday PM bearing gifts some of you nice people could help educate me?

CAVU -- would be interested in hearing what you think about tow vehicles, equippage, etc., since you live far from the big water and it sounds like you have about the same inclinations that I do (fish).

You will not only be welcome, but leave there very glad you came. No gifts required.

So, would that be the same group of mileposts of which the Longview exit is MP38?

See you Saturday!

CAVU Ken

No need for downriggers here. It's to shallow with uneven bottom. Generally we're fishing 7 to 20 ft of water, dragging the cannonball right on the bottom.

Only 1 week to go!

Thanks Larry. I figured as much but didn't want to show up without an important piece of fishing equipment. That would be worse than going cruising and forgetting the Bombay and olives!
Mile347 hope to see you at Cathlamet for some boat chat.

Thank you kindly, all. I will do my best to get there.

TyBoo: No. This would be Columbia river mile 347, which is right outside my office window. However, I do much of my fishing down your way.

Bombay and olives indeed! These be my people.

Wowzer, this shaping up to be a pretty big shindig, I think I may get an early jump on things and come down Thursday before Larry catches um all. I spent all my fun budget on stupid insulation and upholstery so It's looking a little bleak for steaks this year (unless I can find some substantial roadkill this week, I'll keep an eye out). Looking forward to see some new faces, and familiar ones...gonna be a wet one
