Sport spring chinook seasons set for Columbia River
Sport seasons for Columbia River hatchery spring chinook were set Friday in a joint meeting of Washington and Oregon fishery managers.

The popular sport fishery, which has been open in the lower river below the Interstate 5 bridge since Jan. 1, will be extended upriver beginning March 16, the managers agreed.

In all fisheries, only hatchery (adipose fin-clipped) fish may be retained. Seasons by river segment are:

From Buoy 10 upstream to the Interstate 5 bridge, sport fishing will remain open seven days a week, with a daily limit of two adult hatchery salmon and two hatchery steelhead in Washington waters; two adult hatchery salmon or hatchery steelhead in Oregon waters.

From the Interstate 5 bridge upstream to Rooster Rock (located approximately 10 miles upstream of Camas), sport fishing will be allowed seven days a week beginning March 16, with a daily limit of two adult hatchery salmon and two hatchery steelhead in Washington waters; two adult hatchery salmon or hatchery steelhead in Oregon waters.

From Rooster Rock upstream to Bonneville Dam, fishing will be open Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays only beginning March 20, with a daily limit of one adult hatchery salmon or hatchery steelhead per day.

From Bonneville Dam to McNary Dam, fishing in some areas will be allowed daily beginning March 16 with a limit of two adult hatchery salmon and two hatchery steelhead in Washington waters; two adult hatchery salmon or hatchery steelhead in Oregon waters. The open areas will be the same as those open in 2004, from the Tower Island power lines in the Bonneville Pool upstream to McNary Dam, plus the Oregon bank between Bonneville Dam and the Tower Island power lines.
The states have initially set the sport spring chinook season to run through May 15, however the actual season length will be determined by the catch rate on wild chinook that are inadvertently caught and released while fishers target hatchery salmon and hatchery steelhead.

A run of 403,000 spring chinook-including 254,000 destined for areas above Bonneville Dam-is expected to return to the Columbia River this year, said Cindy LeFleur, Columbia River Policy Coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

This is good news. Thanks for the posting Larry. There was some talk the limit could be reduced to one fish in the lower river in return for extending opportunity (read, season length).

Have you heard of any fish showing up in your neck of the woods Larry? I've heard several reports of a few fish caught further up the river. Tim

Darn, darn, darn (and Tom says there are five dams on the Columbia)

We cannot make it this year to Cathlamet after all. Turns out we both have work related obligations for that weekend we can't wiggle out of. I'll be in Burns with the Watercolor folks and Tom has a convention all weekend.

Roberta, we especially regret we won't be able to take you fishing. I'm sure there will be other offers... and those 25 footers are all the rage! Tom noticed the abundance of roof space for fish-dancing.

We look forward to connecting with you all at one of the Washington gatherings this year.

Sigh,
Rene & Tom

I sure hope I have a trailer by then...
Anyone heard from Stevej on the Shearwater?
Maybe we can both boaterhome down from Scappoose?
Less trailer time that way.

By the way, would anyone want me to bring Albacore loins for the pot luck or should I bring Tuna salad?
I guess I could be persueded to make Halibut or Hot wings if everyone is tired of my sea food....

I need to get signed up for the gig and will do so after this.

Ray it would be great to hookup with you and motor down together from Scappoose.
Thinking I will launch Thursday afternoon spend the night at the docks in St. Helens, head out early Friday then return Monday morning. Let me know what your thinking.

Rene and Tom sorry to hear you can't make it. I have room for another if Roberta would like to fish off Shearwater however catching fish is not exactly my speciality.

 I might believe that if I hadn't witnessed your boat limiting out on halibut..... or seeing that springer you had up to your boat at last years Cathlamet gathering. Glad to see you're going to make it Steve.

Well that does it - with fishing assured, I HAVE to be there. That means the ceiling has to be painted this weekend and the garage cleaned soon to so I can get a "hall pass" to go fishing...

Roger

There's more good news. Last years run was supposed to be huge, but only 2/3 of the predicted run showed up. They are predicting that some of that 1/3 of the run stayed out in the ocean an extra year. What that means is that we should have more 5 yr. old fish this year. Those will be the BIG boys and girls in the 18 to 26 lb class. :thup

GET THOSE CHORES DONE, will you be bringing your motorhome?

No - the wife and son are embarassed enough just to be seen with ME... Also, rather than working on an engineering "feat" such as that, I'm busy thinking about how to convert the Honda's to run on Scotch. Then I'll have a good reason to upgrade to the 25 gallon tanks and can treat the fresh water tank water to make it more potable. I will also making siphoning from the tanks a treat instead of a chore...

SteveJ, I'd be delighted to buddy boat on down with you.
It will all depend on my trailer situation.
Stay tuned and get ready. Maybe I'll show you a hole or two on the way  .

Sounds like fun Ray let me know what shakes out or if I can assist with the trailer. Really enjoyed the trip last year if I remember right its about a 60 mile ride. Need to check out the laptop and look at the plot trail.

Hitting some "holes" enroute would be a treat for me Ray. Getting so excited about the trip, been off the water for too long as it is.

Tom and Rene, sorry that you can't make the fish-in. No worries. I will find another host. Thanks for your kind offer.

:thup Looking for a ride. I have the use of a rod (thanks Tyboo). I play well with others, listen to instructions, may or may not follow them, read Hunting and Fishing News once a year while waiting in the check-out line at Freddies, and can clean my own fish. (like I might catch one :o !)

All offers considered. Please send picture of boat. JUST KIDDING!!! Hope there still is room. If not, I can be the official dock greeter and guard any valuable beer that might be left for the fishers return. I can be trusted
