03/26 - 03/28 - Jarrell's Cove

Hey you Sounders, will there be any fish to chase in South Sound during the JC gathering? I'd like to enroll in Jon & CLou U. for lessons on downrigger fishing, would be nice if there where fish

Hi B~C,
I have caught Blackmouth on both east and west sides of Harstiene Island without using downriggers. The fishing pamphlet says that it is open Jan. 1 -Apr.30 one 22" up Chinook . Four oz red banana sinker, Flasher with Hottchie or small spoons was what I was using. I see a lot of people Mooching there also. Sure glad to see Catmans post as I was wondering where Jerrells cove was. Jarrells cove I know where it is. So many places on Puget Sound have similar names small difference in spelling but are very far apart. [/u]

Jon,

Do you know about the boat launch at the base of the Haristene Island bridge? Probably the closest one for you coming from up North. Has a good dock and lots of parking. It is off Highway 3 going toward Bremerton and at Pickering Road just before you cross the bridge to get on the Island. There is also a rough launch near my home a few miles south of the bridge at Arcadia and you could park your trailer in my driveway where it should be safe. I would help you launch and retrieve your boat so you would not have to beach it.
Larry (Helen O) That includes your boat and trailer also.

Lyle, thanks for the information and very nice offer. I"ll have to look that one up on the map and and get an idea where it's at. I just might take you up on that offer.
So, you say there's blackmouth in the area, eh? I wish I could figure out a way to cruise and fish at the same time. :smile
Jon

Hi Jon,
Fish the hour or two of the tide change and cruise the rest of the time. Fresh salmon for the outing would make you a HERO ( or would that be Cindy?) I hear she is quite a fisher person.

Yeah, she's pretty tough to out fish, but yesterday I caught the only fish.
(he he he)
I'll get back to you on the launch location. I'll be the only one coming down on Friday morning and Cynthia will meet up Friday night.
Jon

We are really looking forward do to this one!! Great to meet a new C-Brat or 2 for sure, and heck Mike& Marty, this is in your back yard too!!

Bess-C Lyle, I am gonna be hanging close to you and Jon getting those good fishing pointers too. Thanks in advance Jon.

As for gear ,have ordered a Downrogger, and got Laurie a Penn 320GT2. For now I'll stick with my Grandpa's old Penn, and "phone pole" size rod.

Another good launch for Jerrell's Cove is Joemma State Park on the Key Penisula - turn left at Purdy (coming from I-5 anyway, Hwy 16 to Hwy 302) and go over the causeway, it is maybe 20 miles further, a couple of miles past Home, it is well signed, so you really can't miss it. Of course, there is a $5 launch fee and $10 per night unattended parking fee, so it is probably going to be a $25 check if you come Friday and return Sunday...

I have NOT contacted anybody AT Jerrell's Cove about our coming - I am ASSUMING we are just going to show up at the State Park there. Bad idea? Also, there is a little marina opposite, not sure how many boats it could accommodate, or what facilities it might have, I did not really even consider this..Feedback?

I was thinking along the lines of poping in at the Pate Stark, I wouldn't think there would be to much of a problem finding a space at that time of year

OK - normally, I ignore such trivial things as grammar and spelling around here, but the Topic Heading and Signup Sheet should at least have the location of this event spelled correctly. They do now...as Lyle pointed out earlier, it's Jarrell, not Jerrell.

Just to avoid flashbacks for those of you who had cranky English teachers, I'll finish the post with something a little more informative. Some links online I've found:

Jarrell Cove - Washington State Parks Site

Jarrell Cove - StateParks.com Listing

Some aerial views and a little more info

I've stayed at the little marina several times. I liked it because it has (had)fuel and a small store where I could buy my Rasslin' Weekly magazines.
I think the C-Vote will favor the state park, but if there's not enough room there, we can dock the larger boats like mine at the marina.

I hope we can all tie up at the dock, should not need to but could raft if the rest of the boating world decides to descend on JArrell's [we wouldn't want anybody confused and ending up at the WRONG COVE, now, would we!] Cove at the end of March...and we SHOULD have the new Mercury 7'11" inflatable with the new Mercury 3.5 hp outboard for running around between docks, buoys and stores...

With that new enlarged Mercury 7'11" (kinda like a big Johnson) inflatable, maybe we should bring some longs lines to tie to the bow and stern of the inflatable and to land on opposite sides of the channel and then use it like the old time ferrys to shuttle folks from the marina to the Jaaaaaeeeeeerrrrrrrlllllll Cove State Park. (You know a ferry system similar to the Guemes Island Ferry!) :wink

Not sure where everyone intends to launch, but we have confirmed that the Joemma State Park boat launch on Key Peninsula is open year round. Patty spoke to the ranger, they do take in some of the floats for the winter, but they leave one float out and keep the launch open. This is a great place to launch, easy cruise up to Jarrell Cove between Key Peninsula and Heron Island. It occurs to me, for those arriving Friday afternoon, not sure if we will be able to ourselves, you MIGHT want to cruise up to Allyn and have dinner at the World Famous Allyn Tavern, I think it has been renamed, but it is pretty good. The town of Allyn has a nice little dock there, a short walk up to town. And maybe a Saturday morning latte at Kenny's Northwest Experience - chainsaw art and lattes, what a combination (or are you providing, Bill?)

Hey - who said I was coming? Dang - didn't want to put any more pressure on a certain dealer than I already am...

Oh well, now that the :cat is out of the bag, let's just say I'm hoping Reverend Dave will have at least one Christening ceremony to perform. I just hope he doesn't put a hex on me after all those Johnson jokes...

RE the lattes - no problemo. Machine will be with me, and my brand spankin' new Honda generator will pick up the slack if we have no power...

I'm planning on being there but it will be late Saturday evening. I'll be happy to do christenings and I'm hoping Rev. Jim will do mine. Da Nag, no problem on Johnson jokes......I can handle it!
