02/25 - 02/27 Cruise starting at Cornet Bay, WA

Missed at this dinner you are taking us to? Or just sort of in general? Either way, yes, we agree - they WILL be missed...

P.S. - Dusty, I am just jerking your chain here! But rumor has it that you know all the best spots around Cornet Bay...

Sure a lot of hands on that chain right now Pat!!!!! Oak Harbor eateries I know -- and avoid most of them.

My little breakfast spot, 5 minutes from EQ, has a pretty decent dinner menu now...

It doesn't look like we'll be able to make this gig :sad :unlove :sad

We'll be in San Diego the following weekend for a urology conference. We think we've just got too many irons in the fire right now.

Anyway, we've got to wait for Dusty to have his new green 22' in the water, before we can cruise Coronet :wink

Well I looks as though I WILL be able to attend the 2nd annual Cornet Bay Whatever-it -is-called. If there is a chance that Dusty will be taking us out to dinner I want to be there. Shoot,, even if I have to take Dusty out for dinner I would want to be there.

Now the next big decision. Through Swinomish Channel/Laconner or out into the eastern edge of Rosario and Deception Pass. Wx will make that choice.
 
Will be there Friday afternoon. I think Kate wants to get picked up on Sat on Guemes. If we do a cruise maybe we can come up through LaConner out the Swimomish Channel and I can swing over and pick her up on our way to the islands.
This will likely be our last cruise on the 22. We leave for Maui on the 14th and will dropping the boat off to C-Dory and signing the papers on the 25 on the 14th. We now have a start date on the boat. March 23rd.
Will need to do a de-naming ceremony for Anna Leigh during this week-end also. Maybe Jim can do that.
 
We have tken friday and monday off so we will leave everet friday morning and work are way up to cornet bay. probley lunch in la conner and some fishing on the way.
 
I will be at Cornet Bay Friday afternoon. I was hoping we can meet up with folks and maybe go out to dinner Friday. Saturday is wide open but I was hoping we could do a potluck.
With this small of group and the time of year I think we could head out Saturday for a cruise and decide on our final destination then??
 
Well, things change hourly. Have sold Anna Leigh and the new owners will be coming here from MT. Saturday morning the 26th. So we will be heading out towards where-ever you all are on Sat.
 
David, are you sure you don't want to come over Friday and get one last night on the boat before you sell it. Sure hope we get todays weather next week.
 
This will be my first cruise with the new 16 Cruiser. I could use some assistance in planning for this event.

Could someone please let me know where Coronet Bay is? I'm wondering if it's within reasonable trailering distance or cruising distance from Tacoma.

In her first test runs today, 4K RPM seems to be tops for my boat. I would have to refer to the C-Dory Manufacturer's information... but is this reasonable to cruise along with the 22s and 25s ??

Will the fuel capacity of the 16 Cruiser be adequate for the distances the group hopes to travel?

Is this event usually held at a dock or mooring ball?
I have a small inflatable... should I plan on bringing that along??

Congratulations Gary, looking forward to meeting you at Cornet Bay. I will be over with the new owners of Anna Leigh on Saturday. Probably come by way of Rosario and under the Deception Pass Bridge.
Cornet Bay is just east of Deception Pass. It would be a long run from Tacoma. Especially in a new boat that isn't even broken in yet. There is a public boat ramp and docks there.

Several options to launch.
1. Twin Bridges under the Swinomish Bridges on Hiway 20 between Burlington and Anacortes. Public parking, always a question of security for the vehicle (as it is in a lot of places) From there you could go through LaConner on the Swinomish Channel and out into Duguala Bay hang a right and head over to Cornet Bay. Probably about 30-40 minutes to get through LaConner (No Wake Zone for 4 miles. and then about an hour maybe to Cornet Bay.
2. Trailer to Cornet Bay. From Burlington West on Hiway 20 and then head south over Deception Pass (Whidbey Island) After going over the Deception Pass Bridge you take a left at the first stop light and it is about a mile or so. You will go right past EQ Maine on the right and the ramps are about another 1/4 mile.
3. Put in at Washington Park which is just west of the Washington State Ferry Terminal, Anacortes. Again hiway 20 but go all the way to Anacortes and then continue about 3 more miles. Well signed.
Good parking, I think two ramps with docks. Sometimes a little iffy when the tide is low, but that will not be an issue on that week-end. Lowest daylight tide is 2.5. From there you go out and head south. Guessing about 45 minutes to Deception Pass Bridge, Under the bridge and Cornet Bay is to the right after clearing the bridge and a 1/4 mile of distance.

Other options to launch:
There is a sling at LaConner. More expensive than a ramp but you don't have to flush the trailer brakes...

A bit farther run but not too bad would be to launch at Everett. The best ramps I've ever launched from - 13 total, 6 or 7 going in and a similar number for retrieve. $5 to launch and in the off season they don't charge for parking. Maybe 45 miles by water to Cornet bay (3 hour run). That might be a nice trade-off between running forever and running a bit to break in the engines.

While reading Migael Scherer's "A Cruising Guide to Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands," I hear of outrageous currents and tides in these particular areas. Will either of these come into play during this trip?

I believe that, if I were to do it, I'd select Anna Leigh's ("option # 2) and launch at Cornet Bay. Then you will have plenty of time to cruise and "play" around in that area. Lots of cruising area to explore from there!

Unfortunately, I'll miss this gathering too, as I'll be at a conference at Ocean Shores, that was planned well before this gathering was planned. (At least, I'll be next to salt water .......and it's not costing me anything!)
 
Deception Pass can have some real rip roaring currents at full ebb and flood. Once you've been through there though you will find that the C-Dory with with its shallow draft and power to weight ratio skittles through there with out much worry. More worry is watching for larger boats that haven't got a clue.
 
It is a reasonable trailering distance from Tacoma to Cornet Bay, and I would definitely choose David's option #2, launch at Cornet Bay - I think you will want to be with other people when you make your first trip through Deception Pass. If you want to get a nice boat ride in, an option #4 would be to launch at Everett and come up Saratoga Passage, inside Whidbey. Don't know where you are in your break-in schedule, but this is a nice run if you have the time.

I am not sure the destination has been chosen - I would hope they go out and come back to Cornet Bay for the Saturday potluck, rather than head out and stay out overnight somewhere else...Cruise Director Fred? The potluck will be on dry land or on a dock, you won't likely need your inflatable.

Fuel capacity - how much do you carry? I think most carry two six gallon portable tanks? It was an issue on our trip to Victoria from Sequim Bay, one 16' ran out of gas just short of Sequim on our return, but I don't know if they started full. I would definitely get the straight dope from somebody like Catman, who has cruised far and wide with his 16', or Dave S., who used to have a 16'.

My 16 Cruiser came standard with two 6 gallon fuel tanks. I upgrated to a pair of 9 gallon tanks. With a 40hp, 4 stroke Suzuki, based on the fuel curves vs. engine rpm ( cruising around 4k rpm listed on the C-Dory manufacturer's web site) I'm pretty sure that I dont have enough fuel to get to hawaii.

Agreed - Hawaii is out of reach! But with 18 gallons at 2.1 GPH at 4000 RPM you will have PLENTY of fuel to get to and return from wherever the C-Brats will be going.
