    New Powers

U.S. border agents given power to seize travellers' laptops, cellphones. It will be interesting to see if this "new power" gets exercised. Maybe they will miss the Cuban cigars? http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2008/0 ... ml?ref=rss

    MMSI

I don't want to start a whole debate on MMSI - just a point. I applied for and received my MMSI quite a while ago to configure my VHF for DSC. Later I searched and checked my MMSI on: http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/mars/ship_search.sh My vessel is in the system. For...

    Alaska Series Motor Mount

Received my Alaska Series from Inflatable Boat, Seattle (that's a story in itself) last week. Slight SNAFU though - motor mounts not included but coming on a slow boat from China. Anyone not using or doesn't use their motor mount for a 240TDS who is willing to part with it? I want to get a...

I have copy of VNS 4.01 and it runs well on WinXP. Just installed WINE on Gutsy - has anyone run VNS on WINE?

    Outboard for Inflatable

I have an Alaska series TDS240 inflatable on order - just trying to determine the ideal outboard. I understand I need a long-shaft at the very least. Has anyone powered their similar Alaska series inflatable?

    Furuno Radar

Is anyone using a Furuno 1715 radar? Any comments? I am running a Raymarine C70 chartplotter but not keen on Raymarine radar on the same display.

    Hello from Toba Inlet

Hi folks, this is the first time since the Blind Channel Marina in Mayne Passage that I have had access. We left the Marina on the morning of 23 Jun and headed west to Johnstone Strait then east up Nodales Channel to Chameleon Harbour in Thurston Bay Marine Park. The first two days we were...

    Hello from Mayne Passage

Hi all - our cruise is well under way - trailered to Campbell River and launched at Discovery Marina on 15 Jun. Had a quick chat with Gene of "Reef Madness" at the fuel dock and we departed Campbell River on 16 Jun. Bit chunky in Seymour Narrows but survived. Came across southbound C-Dory 25...

    Digital Selective Calling

A while back I mentioned MMSI etc. What I really wanted to know but didn't (forgot to) include was: has anyone used DSC to call another vessel or received a DSC call and have that vessel's position displayed on a chartplotter? Personally, so far I have just not been motivated enough to wade...

    Oil filter on Yamaha 9.9

Just finished changing oil in my motors (100hp Yam and 9.9 Yam) along with gearcases - gotta love the smell of gear oil! My question: where is the oil filter on a 2004 Yamaha 9.9. The manual says it is in the "built into the oil pan".

    MMSI

The big buzz last spring was MMSI and all its wonderful capabilites when coupled with VHF and a chartplotter. Did anyone ever use it (or figure it out) to any practical advantage? Cheers - Dave

    Honda BF2

Thinking of replacing my Yamaha 2hp, 2 stroke with a Honda BF2, 2hp, 4 stroke. Primary use is on my tender, an Avon Redstart inflatable. I see the Honda is air-cooled - any noise level issues? Anything good, bad or ugly about this motor? thanks - Dave

    Trim tab anodes

Just an observation from looking in albums and noted that not too many seem to have anodes (zincs) attached to their trim tabs. The Bennet manual that came with mine specifically recommends installation of zincs on the tab for salt water operation. I have them on mine and they lose about...

    Factory location

Tentatively stopping by the factory in Seattle next week. I have the addr on 37St NE. Can anyone give me a more exact location in what appears to be a large industrial area, north or south side of 37th? any good landmarks (coordinates) etc. I will be southbound on I-5 from Vancouver (Canada)...

    Line snubbers

Just spent a week doing our Gulf Island shakedown cruise. Met Caryn and Peter (C-Dancer) in Fulford Harbour and Brock (Bambina) in Colburne Passage. Had occasion to anchor at Sidney Spit, it was very windy and lumpy so I reluctantly went to the dock. I docked leeward (that was interesting)...

    Yamaha internal anodes

Has anyone ever checked the internal anodes on Yamaha outboards. My manual (for the 100hp) indicates the location and instruction for checking. Involves the removal of bolts - are there any gasket issues etc that anyone has encountered? cheers - Dave

    Axle location

Have ordered new Road Runner 4500LB to replace my EZLoader and want to get it right this time. I have looked a many album pictures and see that on a tandem trailered 22 Cruiser the forward axle hub is generally in line anywhere between the cabin bulkhead and 8"or so forward. Given a million...

    Raymarine C70 mounting

Almost made up my mind to buy/install a C70 with chartplotter function only, at this point anyway. I would like to do a hanging mount, does anyone have a pic of their installation? to what degree does it obstruct vision? Thanks - Dave
