Truck campers and towing CD 25

The 8.1 is gone. I was surprised that it was available as late as 2007, my understandings was that 2006 was its last year, it must in in some of the GMC Classics. We had an 8.1 in our Suburban and its my favorite towing engine. We now have a GMC Duramax and its a good rig. Right now its...

    Size of kicker

Will the outboard power the boat up a swell and push the boat against a strong wind. If not then add more power. I know the feeling about wanting a small outboard, this is a case where needs probably dictate a larger kicker.

    Tandem Axle Trailer Alignment

I agree that 20,000 is on the just okay side of things. My trailer tires on the boat wore significantly from parking it in the driveway where I had to make a very sharp turn. I have used a local spring shop to do work over the years, I have been satisfied with the work.

    Questions re hot surge brakes

A couple of things: I one time lost the brakes on a 25 foot travel trailer, we stopped safely and made it home without the brakes. I had to stop and let the brakes on the 2500 series Suburban cool off. If you lose you brakes in the mountains, its no casual matter, you need to get that...

    Questions re hot surge brakes

Its not unusual for disk surge brakes to get hot on long down hill runs. I have never had a failure of the system even though they may get hot. The way I have used to reduced the heat is to run a little slower going down hill and be very smooth in the application of the brakes, once you set...

    Towing with a truck camper

We towed an 8000# Sea Ray behind a GMC crew cab dually with an 11-3 Lance with no problems in 50,000 miles. That included some pretty strong cross winds. Lots of companies make extensions Reese makes a Tow Beast extension that is 48" and rated for 6000#. There are others that will allow the...

Towing a dinghy at high speeds

We have done this with a variety of dingy's and closer does tend to be better. A couple of things, the spray can fill up the dingy, you may need a cover. Definitely take any engine off of the dingy. Two ropes from each side of the stern of the dingy to the Cdory would be helpful, not too...

Truck campers and towing CD 25

You may want to go with the 35xx series of trucks regardless of the camper you choose. There is not much reserve capacity left on a 25xx series truck when you get right down to it. The 25xx will tow a lot but the camper and the boat tongue weight may get you. If you are looking at a light...

Best small coffee thermos on the planet is......

We have stainless steel thermos, but the best is an old glass lined plastic Thermos brand version. Picked it up years ago in a small mountain store and have used it on lots of trips. Its good for 8-12 hours depending on how cold the ambient temperature is.

    single-axle trailer adequate?

Why don't you give us the trailer info. A 3500# axle will generally have 5 lugs, a 5000# trailer 6 lugs. What are the ratings of the tires, these will be on the sidewalls. This basic info would be necessary to make any opinion on the feasibility of this trailer for your use. Good Luck.

    Would You Ever Repower a 22' With a 60 Horse Outboard ?

Quite a few year back now, Trailer Boats Magazine did a test on outboard horsepower fuel useage. The point was that using the same boat but changing engines showed that more horsepower did not consume more fuel unless you used more horsepower. They used 3 Mercury Outboards of different...

    Re-power decision

Compression is just one factor to consider. A more important factor is the differences between cylinders. If the engines are running well, not "burning oil" there is no reason to change. Frankly 1000 hours is not a lot of hours. Get a second opinion from a reputable advisor. Rick

    Air Floor or Rigid Inflatable

We have the Merc Air Floor and it has been a very good boat for our purposes. It stows easily in the cockpit and will run a little more then 20mph with a 15hp Johnson with a big eared 4 bladed prop. The only difficult thing with an air floor is the pressure of the floor, it must be at or...

    Towing while on the Interstate

I have found that on interstates its best to tow between 60-65 mph. Its better to have faster traffic pass then to stay with traffic going 70-75 because you do have more stopping distance. The cars behind you have the option of passing if they want. Sometimes I will find someone will cut in...

C 22 towing behind slide in camper

We used a GMC crewcab dually with a 11.5 Lance to tow our 8000# boat for thousands of miles. The Lance had plenty of overhang in the back. We basically used the following system: http://www.reese-hitches.com/extensions_adapters.htm. We stablilized the unit so it would not shift...

My New Inflatable Needs a Motor, But Which One ?

For long distance exploring you will probably use your C Dory. They have shallow draft and can cover a lot of ground. For poking around do you really need to plane? That inflatable will probably not plane given two average weight adults. It takes more to get an inflatable on plane then a...

Mooring Cover Material - Sunbrella vs. Aqualon vs. Dockside

Sunbrella is an excellent product and will not let you down. Do use the Tendra thread, there are several manufactures of this type of product. Also studies have shown that darker colors last longer. If there is a problem with Sunbrella it is that on large boats it can get heavy and difficult...

    Albacore trolling with a kicker?

You can put a big eared prop on the 9.9 and 15's. I have one on my inflatable (air floor) and it works great. You do not have to buy a big foot outboard to get a bigger prop.
