    Tomcat washdown

I just stepped outside to try and trace the hose. 39 degree temperature chased me right back in! I think it’ll hold unto morning. Water was glass today so I set some speed records. Weather is supposed to get sporty tomorrow so I’ll find out how this boat handles the wind. So far, the boat...

    Tomcat washdown

I’m back on the boat and in the middle of my first official cruise! Staying at the spectacular River Dunes marina near Oriental NC. I’ll post pictures when I return. The last bit of winterization I had to do was the washdown in the cockpit. Didn’t realize it had its own pump. Now I realize I...

    iPad, GPS and DC outlet

Tested the iPad in the car today. Navionics worked fine at reporting the proper heading of the car at all speeds. Makes me think interference between the various boat electronics may have been the culprit. Hope to get down to the boat late next week to test it.

Neat trick! Those folks at Ranger Tugs certainly know how to add allkinds of cool features.

    Swim ladder

Thanks for the info John. I'm going to take a hard look at the bracket next time I am at the boat (probably following the next two weeks of rain :cry ) and also make sure the ladder isn't hiding somewhere. May drop a note to the PO to see if he has it. He might be using it on his new boat. I've...

    iPad, GPS and DC outlet

My iPad is definitely cellular plus wifi. Magnetic interference is definitely a possibility but how far can you place it away from the other electronics and still have it reasonably usable? I suppose one test of that hypothesis would be to turn off all other electroincs and see if that makes a...

    About that anchor light...

Looking at all of those wires (and they're under my headliner to add tot he challenge), I'm thinking about hanging a Coleman lantern from a book hook and calling it good.

    iPad, GPS and DC outlet

My experience with iPads using low amp chargers is that sometimes they charge slowly and sometimes they don't charge at all - and no charging indicator appears. Why it is sometimes one way and sometimes another is yet another mystery of the universe. I did check precise location and it was...

    Swim ladder

I just looked at the pictures from my survey. I have the same bracket on the back of the swim step that is visible in your last picture. Are the holes where that bracket is attached the ones you are referring to? What's the purpose of the bracket? I know the previous owner used the boat for...

    Swim ladder

I'm not saying this happened but let's say, hypothetically, that someone spilled a few drops of gasoline on the gunwale, forgot about it on the way back to the slip and then gave a slightly more vigorous than usual push off from the gunwale to get to the deck as the boat drifted in the wind and...

    iPad, GPS and DC outlet

I will use the iPhone to simply test if the outlet is working. If the phone charges but the tablet doesn’t then it’s probably an amperage issue. Not at the boat today but I’ll take the iPad in the car and see if it tracks heading properly

    iPad, GPS and DC outlet

My Ipad has the lightning charger and is cellular with GPS. On the other group I follow, many people reported issues with iPads loosing signals or being off location frequently. I had not thought of the DC outlet not having enough amps for the iPad. Good suggestion to check. I'll plug my phone...

    iPad, GPS and DC outlet

Ain't boats fun? As I headed out today for my first real trip, I had my iPad set up with Navionics and my hardwired Garmin. Got out to open water and found the iPad showing me between 90 and 180 degrees off course. The Garmin agreed with the compass and my eyeball navigation. iPad was just all...

    About that anchor light...

The fuses are labeled and the one labeled Nav Lights is a 30 amp. Of course there's always a chance the labels are incorrect so I'll have to do some tracing. However, the side lights and anchor light appear to the on the same fuse and the red/green lights work so the problem must be farther down...

    Final winterization

Obvious solution to all of this winterization nonsense finally dawned on me. Put a simple electric heater with thermostat in the cabin and leave it on. I've got dock power. Doh!

    About that anchor light...

Here are some better pictures. I was way too sore from spending hours on the cabin sole working on the heater to actually climb up top to take pictures. I did not see anything that looked easy to unscrew (see my post on the hot water heater to understand how critical "easy" is for me) That...

    Final winterization

YouTube lies. Let’s just start off with that. I watched a bunch of videos that purported to show how to add a hot water heater bypass for winterization. The video magicians appear to have employed two tried and true mechanical engineer tricks. First, most of the videos I watched had the...
