Alaska Inside Passage Route - rough draft

Here is a link to our Alaska Inside Passage Route (still working on the details): You can click on the left side to show the waypoints entered so far (fuel stops, marina's, marine parks, etc). I'll be adding more layers as I go. Those layers will then be imported into OpenCpn. Any thoughts...

    Alaska Trip Purchases

Yes, the unit outputs NMEA 0813 AIS & GPS. Plan is to feed OpenCPN and/or Nobeltec. It has received very good reviews on a few forums. I wanted a receiver but for the little extra it was worth getting the transponder also. Another toy to play with while cruising to Alaska at 6kts.

    Alaska Trip Purchases

Hi Harvey Our CD22 might be able to make it (stored in Blaine) - but we are still stuck in Wisconsin.

    Alaska Trip Purchases

Purchased a Matsutec HP-33A 4.3" Color LCD Class B AIS Transponder Combo High GPS Navigator today - shipping from China. $399.00 free shipping. Looking forward to trying it out on the way to Alaska in June. Also, bought a New Sea-Me Active Radar Reflector for $175. Probably not required but...

    C-Dory Sightings

We were up in Door County at our Cottage and noticed a 22ft C-Dory on HWY 57 headed up toward Sturgeon Bay. Never see any C-Dory's in this area - and of course, I recognized the tow vehicle - Colby (which lives a mile from our Madison area house). Hope you had a great time up there - jealous...

    Trim Tab Operation

We have trim tabs and Permatrims (twin Honda's) on our CD22. The only time we use the trim tabs is if the water is very bumpy. But we trim the boat with the Permatrims. I continually trim as I can do it with my hand on the throttle. As I'm coming up on plane I'll trim the motors just by feel...

    DARN Racor filter

I noticed that the fuel filters (canister type - oil filter w/o drain) are much cheaper to purchase. Is it ok to use the filters w/o the drain?

    Honda BF150 uneven rpms

We had a very slight pinch (we had our paddles in the splash well) in the fuel line that caused a similar problem. Good luck.

Heading to Alaska - summer 2015

Thanks Julie. We are getting excited to get on the water. Not only the cruising this year but to have the boat in Alaska for a number of years - just can't wait! We just received news that we "won" permits to see the bears at Anan Creek this summer - so very excited to experience that. Few...

There has to be an easier way to change oil

We use a Fumoto Oil pan valve for our motorhome and all the cars. Just attach a small hose and open the valve. Wonder if you can get these to fit an Outboard (no question you could, just need to know the threads on the outboard)? I agree that changing the oil should be much cleaner - the...

    Bedding compound

We used butyl tape after we had completed the epoxy fill on all the cored holes on our CD22 http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/rebedding_hardware&page=1

North Channel - Georgian Bay - Lake Huron

We've done it a few times and it was like they didn't even notice the boat in tow. We took our Sundowner Tug by water and two customs agents came to the boat and went bow to stern looking in every spot on the boat. Later we saw one of the customs agents in Little Current and she gave us a ride...

    Sealing Starboard for transducers

We successfully mounted our transducer directly to the hull in 2008 and no problems at all. We used JB Weld - simple and easy. Many many hours later and all is still good. No holes.

    RayMarine EV-100 Autopilot Installation

I remember folks complaining about the noise from the pump before we did our install. We installed ours under the helm seat and don't notice the noise. This might not apply to the EV-100, but if the pump wasn't even in the cabin - that might be a bonus.

Heading to Alaska - summer 2015

Thanks Sam - we'll be in touch. RE: long days. Funny thing is we cruised the San Juan's last year over a two week period and almost every day we'd be on the water for 10+ hours just cruising around. Looking forward to actually going someplace in those 10+ hours. We are sailboaters that don't...

Heading to Alaska - summer 2015

Thanks Dr Bob. Not a question of should we do it - already booked. We are travelers (rarely stay 2 nights anywhere on our motorhome or CD22 - and have travelled 70k+ miles on the motorhome in the last 2.5yrs), so we've heard the not enough time to enjoy argument before. But we have been to 49...
