New aluminum anchor winch just finished building

Went chasing dungeness crab today and tried out the new winch. (twice) at 30 feet and again at 50. I also pulled the anchor a few feet by hand on the 50 foot spot just to remind me why I took on this project to start with. The thing works like a dream. I know some don't think the 3/8 rode is...

New aluminum anchor winch just finished building

That's what I bought my Dory for Sunbeam,,a fish boat. The top photo with the side view of the drive end of the drum I cut in half is really the only tricky part to building it. You have to drill the winch motor's 4 screws that hold the gears in out to 1/4 inch and space it out after you get the...

New aluminum anchor winch just finished building

This particular winch would not be acceptable to a lot of the C-Dory owners for sure. I am kind of a commercial guy anyway and I guess the only one I have to please is me. It is simple to operate, cheap to repair and build, holds all the rode I need, and like you said, it keeps muddy bottom...

New aluminum anchor winch just finished building

Thanks THATAWAY for the info on the 3/8 nylon, and for putting the photos up. I sent 5 or 6 more if you got them. Pure 3/8 nylon has a tensile strength of 3240 lbs and a working load of 270 with a 12 safety factor, so it should hold up OK. I wouldn't use the combo-poly-nylon though and trust it...

New aluminum anchor winch just finished building

I remeasured my drum and it has 8 inch sides and is 10 inches across inside. I now have 260 feet of 3/8 nylon and 18 feet of 1/4 galvanized chain wound onto it and still have about 3/4 of an inch to the top of the plate.

New aluminum anchor winch just finished building

To answer some of your questions about the winch, you can buy these little 2000 lb winches several different places or direct from Cal. I got mine at Costco for $49.95. $50.00 for the 5052 x 1/4 aluminum sheet which was enough to do everything if you don't make any mistakes. I don't know of...

New aluminum anchor winch just finished building

The Lori-L finally has a new aluminum anchor winch attached to the front deck. Took me most of 3 weeks working an hour or so a day to cut it out and build the drum for it. Used 5052 1/4 inch aluminum for the main structure and drum circles and 2 1/2 aluminum pipe for the center. Tacked it all...

    Wallas stove/heater Question

Just answered my own question. I read the installation instructions and maintenance manual again and it says under the old fuel paragraph that isopropyl alcohol can be ran in the stove to clean dirty fuel pumps and burners. It says for 10-20 minutes, but if you could run one that long why...

    Wallas stove/heater Question

I guess I would have to refer back to my last post, "any fuel can be dangerous" If it had of been propane I imagine things would have got a lot worse. It's true, diesel is probably the safest fuel, but hot diesel can be as dangerous as any of them. I prefer natural gas actually on a boat, but it...

    Wallas stove/heater Question

I agree any fuel can be dangerous, but I have had several alcohol stoves over the years and if you use them the way they should be, they are probably as safe as any of the marine stoves. I think most people get in trouble not knowing how to light them and get way too much fuel in them when...

    Wallas stove/heater Question

Thanks for the reply and I am aware of the difference and have had 4 diesel boats in the trolling operation we did. I like alcohol over diesel even though we did use dickenson stoves on our commercial boats. I had read that you can also take the wick out and soak it in alcohol and desolve the...

    Wallas stove/heater Question

I was just curious,,, But you are probably right. I thought maybe someone had tried it. I have a model 100 with a blower lid and I burn Kleen Heat in it. Can't burn #2 in this model. Who ever put the stove in the boat, ran the exhaust out through the bulk head onto the back deck and I am...

    Wallas stove/heater Question

Just curious,,, Has any of you ever tried using alcohol in your Wallas stove instead of Kleen Heat or kerosene?? I removed mine to replace the wick and looked at the burner setup, and I don't see any reason it wouldn't burn OK, but don't know if it would explode in the process. Big thing would...
