Do any brats use marine charts?

We have a laminated placemat on the boat table..yes a placemat...that depicts the San Juan waters. I'm sure you're seen them at island restaurants. It's chart like. The standing joke is that we refer to that thing more often than anything else, and it's probably true!

    Naming Poll

I'm a big fan of naming boats after birds! I would just go with "Kestrel" for overall ease and convenience. Back in the day, the Kestrel used to be called a "Sparrow Hawk," that would be cool too!

Yes, there is still a dock at James.

Crab pots vs WA. State Ferries

I'm not sure that any reasonable regulation would matter. I see folks put their crab pots in the direct pathway of the Alaska Ferry in Bellingham all of the time...when the Ferry is at the dock and loading passengers.

I hit that same traffic too! Seven hours though, for a lifetime experience, I can afford that.

    Farmed Salmon Escape

"The company, Cooke Aquaculture, blamed "exceptionally high tides and currents coinciding with this week's solar eclipse" for the failure of the net pen near Cypress Island." At Cypress Island there are plenty of tides as high, or higher, than the one experienced during the solar...

    An eclipse preview...

Were you in the pathway of totality? A total eclipse is really a binary event. Either you are in the pathway of totality or you are not and what you see at 99% is entirely different than what you will witness at 100% totality. While I still think that seeing a partial eclipse is "whelming," I...

    forward cabin windows

I just hate poking additional holes in my boat! Seriously though, with the hatch and cabin windows open, and perhaps even the cabin door, I don't know how much more ventilation a tiny window would provide in a 22.

Anyone been crabbing in the San Juans (WA)?

It's been good up in the Bellingham/Chuckanut/Eliza area...at least for me. It's getting hit pretty hard right now, so I don't know how long it will last!

    Gulf Islands Advice

By "primitive" I merely mean a camping area that is primarily for tent camping and not for RVs. I'm not looking to hunt wild meat, cook over an open fire and howl at the moon. We are a family of 4, with a very old '22 classic. It doesn't have a bathroom, sink, stove, shower, heater, or shore...

    Gulf Islands Advice

Our family has done most of our cruising in the San Juan's, but we would like to start exploring the Gulf Islands. In particular, we enjoy places like Cypress and Sucia Islands where we can set up a primitive camp on the beach and hike, go crabbing and tide pooling, etc... Does anyone have any...

    Kayak advice needed...

I can't say enough about the new Epic V5 kayaks: http://www.epickayaks.com/product/product/epic-v5. Coming in at 14 feet and weighing anywhere from 26 pounds for the kevlar version to 48 pounds for the rotomolded version, they are performance oriented, fast, stable as all get out, and very safe...

    Get home motor use

Just last week, my steering cable broke about 100 yards outside of the Bellingham Squalicum Marina...on a busy opening day of the recreational crabbing season...with a moderate S wind blowing us towards the rocks. For those of you who use that marina, you know how bouncy that water can be. We...

How I can sell a wooden small cruiser

First, have you listed it on the boating section of Craigslist? I would certainly try that first. Second, and I speak from experience, it's difficult to sell a niche/wooden boat like that. I eventually had to part mine out. Sold the motor, sold the trailer, and basically gave the boat away.

    News from Gate 8

Saturday is the start of the crabbing season for area 7S of the Puget Sound and from the activity at Gate 8, Squalicum Harbor, Bellingham, I would guess that the entire state will be crabbing tomorrow. I've also notice that there are two other C-Dorys at Gate 8 this summer, either of which...

    Downrigger placement advice please

Thanks everyone. I will go with position 2 and, of course, I will mount the outrigger base using Bob's recommended over-drill, epoxy, re-drill...etc...procedure. Johnr
