    C-Dory Venture 23 vs Trophy 2359

Bingo. I too own an IO on my 22' Campion. Though it's a solid, quiet power plant (Volvo 4.3) with duoprop outdrive, it is a PIA to work on. Furthermore, it takes way too much space in the cockpit. With the advent of excellent 4 stroke outboards or even better, IMO, the 2 stroke Evinrude...

    Dinghy storage??

I never use a dink in the winter. Rarely in the summer and when I do, I tow it. Putting on the boat just adds weight, limits visibility (foredeck), and windage. -Greg

    Dinghy storage??

It's a 27' Devlin pilothouse and the foredeck or roof would fit the dinghy. I could even mount it on the swim platform. However, we use the boat at least twice a month in the winter and the hassle of unloading and loading doesn't seem worth it. It is a self bailer but at the end of the...

    Dinghy storage??

Normally I put our 10 foot Livingston Dinghy on the finger dock for winter storage but this year, the marina is enforcing a revenue-creating no-no. They said I must either put it in the water, behind my boat, or they'll happily store it for $25/mo. Question...if I leave it in the water and it...

stuck in the hole, getting up on plane

I hate to add another boat to your list but it would be worth looking at Campion's Explorer model at the boat show, if a 22' model is suitable. It's a deeper V than C-Dory and has a flexible layout instead of a permanent dinette. Most important, it's made in Canada, and with the favorable...

Are you unhappy with the Arima? -Greg Not at all. I do however like the creature comforts like table and galley. A boat, any boat is a compromise. Just looked at the add above for 23 C-Dory Venture, looks like a pretty good fishing/cruising compromise! I took a long look at the 21' Arima...

    Trailering a 9'6" Boat

That's precisely my strategery. This allowed me to keep my paid for Explorer vs. buying a larger rig. Another option is to moor the boat in the off-season and trailer it in the summer. Off season moorage rates are relatively low. For example, at Brownsville, we pay $128/mo. from Oct-April...

That's so funny. I had the same experience too. I thoroughly enjoyed our 2 hour visit. The only thing that was unpleasant was the fact I was wasting his time, being that I wasn't ready buy an Arima or Rossy. Les knew that but he didn't seem to mind educating me. Still....I felt pangs of...

    Trailering a 9'6" Boat

Jimmy, I get the heeby-jeebies even thinking about towing a boat larger than a 22 footer. If you're thinking Rossy, what stops you from permanently mooring it, especially if you're staying in the Sound? -Greg

    1. Starcraft 25' Express Cruiser, then a Maxum 2400 Express Cruiser, then a Regal 25' Express Cruiser. Good, better, best. 2. 1992 Reinell 181 ski boat, 1998 22' Campion Victoria, and 1987 Devlin, 27' Black Crown. 3. We came close to buying a new R-25 and chartering it. Chose the Devlin...

    North Pacific 28?

Sam has done it although I don't know the exact evolution. My 27' Devlin is called the Black Crown and Sam still makes them in a 29' version with a private head and a 150 hp stern-driven diesel. There are a couple on Yachtworld for a cool 150k. He also has the layout displayed on his...

    North Pacific 28?

I agree. On our Devlin, we crossed the Sound from Seattle to BainBridge under SCA conditions with wind waves at our beam. I had the 44 hp Yammy at WOT most of the crossing and made 8 knots. I was wishing for more. -Greg

    Wife-Friendly Boat Advice

Matt's right! I'm 6' and 200 lbs. I did sit and stand on the Arima head with the door closed. My immediate thoughts were as Thomas describes....use the outdoor plumbing over the side. It's basically a phone booth. However, my 5'3" petite wife would do fine. Is this head worth it to...

    Wife-Friendly Boat Advice

The OP mentions wife-friendly. With my blue-water better half, two things are essential. Warmth and the Loo. On my 22' Campion, it's the portapotty which she tolerates....barely. However, if a 22' were to become our primary cruising boat, we'd have to change the boat to a cabin...

Given your criteria, you may want to add the 22' Campion Explorer to the list. I have one and I truly like it for these reasons... 1. It's deep-V and does a nice job in the chop 2. Versatile cabin. No permanent dinette or table. We have ours configured to seat 4 and sleep 2. I'd go with...

    need advice

My advice, FWIW. 1. Having bought and sold 6 boats so far, I agree that your upcoming purchase will unlikely be your last one.....unless you do your homework well, i.e. buying the boat that meets your priorities perfectly. 2. Add Arima to your list. They allow you to custom build your...

    Trailering a 22ft cruiser

I'll 3rd that. I hauled my 22' pilothouse Campion from Dana Point to Portland with my 1/2 ton V-8 Explorer. I made it but it was very hard on the vehicle, especially pulling the Grapevine and Siskyous. Fried a wheel bearing in the process. Short hops are fine but no mountains. -Greg

If you have an iPhone (and even if you don't)...

I'm paying $60/mo. for Sprints air card which has a GPS receiver. Works great with Nobeltec software on my laptop. However, I-phones are $30/mo. for their service. Can they be tethered to a laptop? If so, would the upload speed be the same as Sprint or Verizon's aircards? If so, then it...
