Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

I have had a sea lion on my 22 cruiser while anchored off Whiskey Gulch in lower Cook Inlet, but I was not on board at the time. Had to scare him off before I boarded. Other than a slight fish smell and a couple of small scratched from his flipper claws, my boat was no worse for the...

    The Facts On Fish Farms

The problem with hatcheries is the over-population of salmonids in the North Pacific. With recent cooler ocean temperatures this has resulted in too much competition for food. The "dumb" hatchery fish are effective competitors for this food base because they are not as cautious as wild fish...

    Gelcoat oxidation?

I am not sure this is recommended or not, but I have used some Penetrol from Home Depot to wipe the oxidized area before polish and waxing. It seems to rejuvinate the gelcoat.

Angler anchor? & best gelcoat cleaner?

If you choose a claw, I would recommend a Rocna. Pricey but will set much better in varied bottoms than a standard Bruce or similar claw. Might check out the fisherman model which will let you retrieve it easier.

Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

Have enjoyed your travelogue especially since after 17 years of exploring Prince William Sound, the Kenai Fiords and Cook Inlet in my CD22, I am looking at possibly relocating to Juneau. In my limited research concerning that area, I have been especially interested in the Chichagof Wilderness...

    Motor Trouble--Any Ideas?

Catch, I have seen eagles catch and eat several seagulls over the years. One I recall watch hold the seagull down and pluck it while it was alive and then eat it. Nature is not as pretty as Walt Disney likes to portray it.

    Another Non-Skid Thread

Don't worry about refinishing it, except as needed to prevent water getting into the fiberglass (a little gelcoat repair will take care of this). Just get some Dry-Dek. It comes in one foot squares and can be cut to fit. Best investment I ever made for my boat. Especially when halibiut...

    A cautionary tale

berryst, Frankly, it was a matter of perspective at that point. The fetch from the N was limited so I didn't think it could get much worse, and compared to what we had been through it didn't look so bad. If it had been worse than I expected, I could also have tucked back into Thumb Cove to the...

    A cautionary tale

Thanks for posting the map. I was going to try and post something myself, but you beat me to it. After looking at the map, I am going to make two revisions to my story. First the swells were more from due E not ESE, secondly that would have put them at about 50-60 degrees off the stern, not...

    A cautionary tale

Some time ago, I had cautioned someone who was planning on visiting Alaska’s Prince William Sound to be wary of the currents around the points near ocean entrances as they can be dangerous even in modest winds if those winds are against the currents. As a warning, I further related that I had...

    30' Tomcat

Here is one for sale in AK. http://anchorage.craigslist.org/boa/2737111422.html Was wondering what had happened to these boats. Not sure how many were made. Believe it was the mid to late 1990s when these were produced, maybe two years.

    Mrs Byrd suffers brain aneurysm

Godspeed to her and condolences to you and yours. From experience I can tell you that you can accept the loss, but you will never really get over it. There will be too many things to remind you of her. When I am on my boat, I see the lines my father braided (though most are looking a little...

    Looking for simple/compact depth finder

Like Bob said - keep the radar, even if you upgrade to a chartplotter/sounder combo. Not only will you save the cost of a new radar unit, but you will have a redundant means of navigating (assuming you are in nearshore areas) - especially important if you will ever operate at night. That and...

Water leaking into cabin, 22 ft. crusier

I had this problem. Significant water on rare occasions after a rain. Ultimately discovered that water entering from rubrail at aft cabin bulkhead. There was a gap at hull joint there that was supposed to be filed with putty before hull seam was fiberglassed, since this spot could not be...

Recommendations for a day trip from Anchorage

NOAA says Cape Suckling to Gore Point is E30 knots and 9' seas for Saturday, so might be a little uncomfortable taking a glacier tour out of Seward except the short one to Bear Glacier and on an E30 that could be a little rolly. If you want to see Galciers and a whale or two, then Whittier...

    On our way to Alaska

Jack, we always camped on beach about a half mile N of Happy Valley, so unless we were the ones getting rowdy it was usually pretty quiet. I did get to see a brand new Chevy 4X4 get stuck and taken by the tide and a couple of boats broach on the beach but that was about it for excitement...

    On our way to Alaska

Jack, was the old High Tide in the water at Deep Creek in the mid-80s. I remember seeing the Red Fox and one other 22 Angler in those days. I went through several increasingly larger boats til I got my 22 Cruiser in 1995. Saw you many times but never had an opportunity to meet you. Don't get...

    Anchorage AK fiberglass repair

Finesse Fiberglass from the valley although he did a lot of work in Anchorage and Whittier, if he is still in business. Fixed a cracked transom for me about ten years ago and it is stronger and looks better than when it left the factory. Stronger part wasn't too hard as factory just filled top...
