I'm new to the C-Dory game, but in my newly acquired 22 Cruiser, I find the downwind leg most disconcerting because there is an occasional tendency to broach on a large wave. I think the trick is not to travel close to the speed of the waves.
I bought a gelcoat repair kit that comes with a very thin sheet of stiff plastic to lay over the wet gelcoat while it dries. It leaves a smooth glossy surface, looks almost like new when it's done.

Bent, removed, straightened, replaced. I added a ratchet strap from the trailer to the bow eye to prevent bouncing that might bend it again. Thanks for the suggestion, TR Bauer!
