    Circumnavigating Vancouver Island

I also saw Chromer on Checkpoint II a couple of days ago. He was out fishing when I cruised by...it sounded like the fishing has been slow..hopefully you've had a good trip to Barkley Sound nonetheless!

    Circumnavigating Vancouver Island

In Ucluelet now, after spending the last several days in Barkley Sound. I just updated the blog with the last many days. Terry, from Thalassa, kindly introduced me to his friends who have a cabin in Barkley Sound. I stayed a night at their place and had a great time. Thanks Terry! Jay, thanks...

    Insurance for older boats

Check with Boat Insurance Agency in Seattle. They'll shop a number of underwriters for you. I told them how much I wanted to be insured for. $525 a year for a $65,000 agreed value policy, $650 deductible, and the highest liability coverage anybody offered.

    Vancouver area transient slips

French Creek Harbour Authority and Quayside Marina are your best bets in French Creek. Coal Harbour Marina in Coal Harbour is top notch but expensive. Both Coal Harbour and French Creek are good locations.

    Circumnavigating Vancouver Island

I'm anchored near Tofino and my cell phone has come buzzing back to life. Stefan, on Ornery Rover, another CD22, spotted me in Friendly Cove a few days ago and stopped by. He's out fishing with his brother and dad for a few days. Most of the boats I've seen on the west coast are in the 20-25...

    Circumnavigating Vancouver Island

Back in Walters Cove. It's been rainy and windy the past few days. Poked the bow out today (gale warning, gusting to 35 knots) and it was ugly! Friday looks like it'll be calm and I'll head south again. My Wallas died today. Slow ignition, lots of smoke, wouldn't stay lit. I'd seen this...

    Circumnavigating Vancouver Island

I'm now in Walters Cove. I've had a wonderful couple of days anchored out at Columbia Cove and then the Bunsby Islands. Spectacular country, and way different from cruising on the "inside." Rounding Brooks Peninsula was a non-event. Conditions were calm, but for a small ground swell. Heavy mist...

    Circumnavigating Vancouver Island

Don, you'll enjoy the trip when you make it. I certainly am so far. Lyle, a gentleman I met at Echo Bay suggested visiting Hesquiat Harbour and Cougar Annie's place. With your recommendation, it's definitely on my list. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and crossing Hesquiat Bar won't be a...

best outboard to buy to replace a honda 135????

One advantage of the Etec is not having to change oil. This isn't a big deal for most people, but if you run your boat a lot of hours (which you do) it saves the hassle of changing the oil, especially if you have to do it in the water. I doubt there's much cost savings since you're still burning...

    Circumnavigating Vancouver Island

Yesterday was the perfect day to round Cape Scott. Low swell, no wind, calm seas. The Van Isle 360 sailboat race is underway. I passed them on my way to Bull Harbour, then again on my way to Quatsino Sound. Great conditions for me mean horrible conditions for sailing. Saw a bear and two cubs...

    Circumnavigating Vancouver Island

An update...I'm in Port Hardy right now, day 11 of this trip. Fabulous weather so far (for the most part) and it's been a fun trip north. The real adventure will begin this evening or tomorrow morning (or whenever the weather cooperates, really) when I head out of Port Hardy to round Cape...

    Ranger 27 in SE Alaska

Great stuff, Russ. The grocery store up the hill in Petersburg has a van and they'll drive you back to the docks after you buy groceries. No charge. At least that's how it was last summer. They've got a better selection and lower prices than the grocery store in the main part of town.

    Inflatable Kayak

I've got an Advanced Elements Advanced Frame (single) kayak and love it. It's no touring kayak, but it's perfectly capable of dinghy duties. It's super stable, paddles reasonably quickly, and tracks decently. Similar performance to Ocean Kayak sit on tops that I've used. Oh, and it's been...

    SE Alaska 2013

Hi Casey and Mary, I didn't do the whole Behm Canal last summer but did explore a bit of Misty Fjords. Overnighted in Carp Island Cove and Punchbowl Cove. Both beautiful. Here are links to what I wrote about them at the time...

Lets keep track of Good and Bad Customer Service

Not really C-Dory related, but I just had a very good experience with Apple repair. I had a few dead/stuck pixels on my Macbook Pro so I took it into the University Village Apple store. 18 hours later I have the computer back with a new display...great service and fast turnaround, especially...

09/21 Lake Powell September 2013 Gathering

I was in Zion a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful area and well worth a visit. There were tons of RVs going through the tunnel, so be prepared to wait. Every time I went through I waited for ~20 minutes (I was in a normal sized car, but the tunnel seemed to only operate in one direction because...

Received 15lb Manson supreme anchor and rode this week

FWIW, I carry a 15lb Manson Supreme with 50ft 1/4" chain and 300ft 1/2" 8-plait as my primary anchor. My backup is a 14lb Delta with 20ft of 1/4" chain and 200 ft of 1/2" 3 strand rode. The Manson has worked well everywhere I've used it. While the Delta is a similar design, I already had it...

    Triton now Northwest Marine Industries?

Matt, the promotion of C-Dory boats on the new Northwest Marine Industries website is what prompted my statement. Upon further review, however, Northwest Marine Industries may have set up their website prior to the conclusion of the litigation with Carsten.

    Triton now Northwest Marine Industries?

Here's how I understand what happened: 1. Lindhout brothers (through International Composite dba Triton Marine Industries) bought the C-Dory and Skagit Orca molds from Fluid Marine. They paid $100,000 cash, plus several years of royalties to Rich Finlay(Earn-Out). 2. Rich Finlay, of Fluid...
