SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

After a very, very busy week (work calls as late as 10 pm each night) I decided to take Friday afternoon off and head down to the APG marina. Temperature was around 80 F, winds light from the southeast, and skies clear except for a layer of altocumulus here and there portending a change. Days...

    Tideminders

There are a few, but cost of installation and maintenance seems to be the key factor. APG marina used to have floating docks but the retrieval and upkeep costs were too high and so the rebuild took the cheapest approach. The longtime slip holders complained but not much response. It’s a...

    Tideminders

Well, I think Loren's project is in good hands! We have really enjoyed it. We took it up to the St Lawrence in June for a week, then have kept it at APG most of the summer in a slip (although the algae growth is horrendous. But, at least the Bay is fresh water that far north). I wasn't put off...

    Tideminders

Here’s a short video that shows how the Tideminders work in choppy conditions. Our marina is completely exposed to the NW through ESE. https://youtu.be/UrUCv8_oxZc We get 3’ tide swings here, so the Tideminders also help with that twice-daily adjustment. We had a real test a couple weeks ago...

Advice on mooring my boat for the summer

The APG marina is exposed to the north through east. The water is shallow in that area of the bay so any wind from about 300 through 85 or so will cause waves to hit all tied in boats broadside. I was there yesterday as the wind picked up and noticed the Tideminders were doing an excellent job...

    Towing speed (?)

Exactly! We are typically towing from/to a vacation - so why bring the commute mindset?

    Best Angle for large waves

Makes sense. The only time I experienced the "Where is this thing going?!?" moment was after turning downwind and not retrimming (yeah, duh). 15 knots or so seems to be about the tolerable max in any type of chop.

    Best Angle for large waves

Interesting -- so the "sharp entry" is why the bow heads where it wills when the boat is pushed from behind?

    Advice for a small cruiser

I retired from the Army (armor and infantry) I don’t have to practice being miserable anymore.

    Best Angle for large waves

Indeed! And the difference between various parts is remarkable. On Sunday the wind was from the North, with steady waves against the marina (made docking a bit more challenging). Waves out in the main channel were more regular, but the more protected area around HdG had lots of short choppy...

    Best Angle for large waves

Yes! All excellent points. I learned about the Bow Up v. down a couple of months ago when I turn back and had following seas with Permatrim set to pitch the bow down -- which helped in the chop I was running into but gave me an uncomfortable moment when I felt like the boat was being pushed...

    Best Angle for large waves

Yesterday we spent a splendid day out on the northern Chesapeake Bay. We left APG, motored out to the main channel near Turkey POint, then headed to Havre de Grace where we tied up for a bit so we could walk into town for some Bomboy homemade ice cream (very very good!). But everyone else had...

    Advice for a small cruiser

The CD22 we purchased had a new Dometic A/C mounted (the previous owner was in Savannah, GA). I've had it on twice and both times was VERY happy to have it!

New to me ‘92, 22’ C Dory baselining advice

Congratulations! We are also new owners of a 94 22' Cruiser that was restored by the previous owner. We have been very happy with the boat. Ours is currently tied in slip at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. The 115 Yamaha is plenty of power (and may in fact be too much -- it's rare the water is...
