URGENT EMERGENCY DSC CALL BUTTON USE

When I bought my boat about 6 years ago, it came with the original Raymarine VHF radio which included a DSC button. After taking my VHF radio course and obtaining my Restricted Radio Operators License which allows me to use a VHF radio in Canada, I looked at my radio and discovered that a MMSI...

    Autopilot

We have encountered a lot of floating logs in our cruising around Vancouver Island, but the scariest thing are the deadheads. These may 50 foot logs with only the butt end floating at or near the surface. Last summer boating in the Broughtons, we were coming up a channel in light fog. Up...

    Autopilot

Good Auto Pilot videos. I am looking at upgrading my old Raymarine C80 system to the Raymarine Axiom system with the new auto pilot. My old Raymarine autopilot is button based and to do a 30 degree turn you need to press the button three times to do a quick turn. Boating in the PNW waters...

Moving up from a CD22 but where and when does it stop?

We have had Mistaya for about 5 cruising seasons and have had a number of good adventures on her. We live in Alberta, so there are maybe 3 lakes suitable for overnight cruising, so we need to travel to boat. This makes the 22 perfect for us. We have had thoughts of moving to Vancouver Island...

Upgrading from Raymarine C Series to Axium ???

I have decided to change out my 17 year old Raymarine electronics system with a new Raymarine Axiom + system which will include the radar. At the moment I am trying to learn as much as I can about the various components and trying to put together the options into a system that I hope will last...

    high wind: anchoring aches

My boat came with a Honda 90 and Honda 9.9 and both are in excellent condition, but if they would have come with twins I would be fine with that, but if I were buying a new boat and outfitting it from scratch, I certainly would consider twins. BTW. My better half does most of the docking and...

    high wind: anchoring aches

One of my biggest complaints (and one of the few complaints that I have) with a C-Dory is that it does sail a lot in the wind and current due to its flat bottom. With the cabin and we often have the camper back on it and often two kayaks up top, it also has a high profile that has a lot of...

    Handheld VHFs with GPS/DSC

We have a pair of Standard Horizons that we use when sea kayaking and also carry on the boat. I also have a Standard Horizon as my main fixed radio on my boat. I am very pleased with all of them and would not hesitate to buy these same radios again. All three of the radios have DSC and...

    Venting heat

Ha Ha. We have different problems here in the Great White North. Today the temperature on my ranch in Alberta, Canada is -40C (-40F) outside and probably not much different inside my boat.

If you were going to refresh

My boat came with a 2005 era Raymarine C-80 plotter, radar, fish finder and autopilot. It is all still running fine 99% of the time, but as with everything it is getting old and I worry about reliability, especially when I am on a remote cruise. I am now looking at a new system and I am...

    Below-deck fuel tanks above deck?

I wanted to do the same and found a $100 solution that adds 45 litres (12 gallons) of fuel. I bought a 45 litre portable marine gas tank and it fits perfectly between my two built in tanks. I added a t - valve to my fuel line and attached it to the tank. It works perfectly and I can now carry...

Raymarine Axiom with Navionics or LightHouse Charts

When navigating, I often like to refer to different layers of information and this is one reason that I am thinking about the LightHouse Charts on the Chart Plotter. I already use the iPad with Navionics and if it were side by side with the CP I could refer to two sets of charts plus the paper...

Raymarine Axiom with Navionics or LightHouse Charts

I am now looking at upgrading my Raymarine C80 based system to a modern navigation system. I am leaning towards the Raymarine System. I have a question for Raymarine users. Do you prefer the Navionics charts or the LightHouse charts? I will be boating mostly in the PNW. I use Navionics...

    Lake Powell

I've been to Lake Powell twice, 2007 - 10 days by canoe and 2018 - 14 days in a C-Dory. My next trip will likely be in my sea kayak. It might prove to be interesting with the low waters that more canyon hiking might open up. Maybe in 2022. The question would be where would the best launching...

    Moisture control under v-berth mattress

I use one of those Korean butane stoves for a lot of our cooking. I tend to often cook in the cockpit under the bimini or in the camper back. This is especially important when you are boiling pasta or frying fish or bacon. It keeps much of the moisture out of the cabin and the smell as well.

    Moisture control under v-berth mattress

We usually turn the Wallace off overnight, but we have used it all night if it is especially cold. I prefer to run it with an energy free Eco-Fan which circulates the air and does not drain the battery. It is also very quiet which the the Wallace Fan is not. I always have some ventilation...

    Moisture control under v-berth mattress

We had the same problem with moisture under the mattress and in the cabin and berth overall. Being from bone dry Alberta we are probably hyper sensitive to the moisture when we are on the coast. We boat mostly off Vancouver Island, but have had our boat in the water from the Yukon to Lake...

    Charts Charts and more Charts

In Canada you are still required to carry paper charts. You probably could sell them to other boaters heading this water. Perhaps if you publish a list here you might find buyers for them.

    Canadian vaccine requirment

I certainly would not plan a date based on heresay and would go directly to the CBSA. The requirements are changing quickly and my feeling from what I have heard is that only fully vaccinated people with a negative covid test within 72 hours are allowed to come in. But, by the time I hit...

    Fuel Efficiency...

We did most of our cruising this summer at hull speed and at most 25% of the time we pushed the throttle to get up to plane speed when we wanted to make time in some of the longer fjords on Vancouver island. Almost a month of cruising on about 340 litres fuel, That's less than 100 gallons for...
