    10/15 - 10/29 - 2017 Snake/Columbia River C-Dory Cruise

Colby, That Hammond takeout is miles better than the ramp in Astoria, as Tyboo says. Killer fish and chips a short drive in to Hmmond at Buoy 9, if you are famished. Tyboo knows the way. You guys are doing this in fine style. With any luck on the wind, you should have smooth sledding iall...

    10/15 - 10/29 - 2017 Snake/Columbia River C-Dory Cruise

Interesting the different takes on usefulness of AIS for tugs and other commercial vessels on the "upper" Columbia. If it is true, as colbysmith found, that AIS locating receivers are scarce over many reaches of the upper Columbia, then it may be that commercial vessels feel an AIS unit is not...

    10/15 - 10/29 - 2017 Snake/Columbia River C-Dory Cruise

Colby, I cannot vouch for those daily goals above Bonneville, largely because I have no experience locking. However, I have quite a bit of experience below Bonneville, almost all of it below Longview (near Kalama), where daily mileage goals are substantially less. And they seem much smaller...

    Interesting job

Until a few years ago, all pilot transfers on the Columbia River Bar were done using pilot boats. The helos came in to play when the pilots realized they could handle more ships each "workday" for a given pilot, because the pilot vessels move about less rapidly than helos. Pilots used to spend...

    Interesting job

I have thought this, also. The Bar pilots are very emphatic, stipulating, "No man ropes." at every transfer. I suppose the hazard of entanglement may be more prominent in their minds.

    Hurricane Irma prep questions

Data point from Ft. Myers from a buddy who moors his houseboat there in the off season ... from June to November: no damage to his boat, only small amounts of damage to other vessels in his relatively exposed marina. This is in contrast to the last hurricane that hit Ft. Myers. Buddy...

    Interesting job

(Tyboo, somehow I ended up on this one: https://youtu.be/_weLIMK4ImE ... a Lisbon pilot transfer. Wrong one.) That is a very dicey move compared to what your son's video shows. The pilot in the correct video makes a swift, clean transfer, still a ballsy move, though! Thanks for putting it...

    10/15 - 10/29 - 2017 Snake/Columbia River C-Dory Cruise

Bob, Could be that the terrain for this fire is too irregular and too steep for those larger aircraft. Or is that figure USFS - wide?

Hear you. One reason I like pBase is they do not change the interface.

    Whidbey Island Rocks

This one has been floating my boats for over ten years. Cost? 23 bucks a year, more storage than I will ever use. No ads, no BS. Easy interface for uploading to the site, easy to map a hot link from my stuff to anywhere, including forums like CBRATS. Here is my layout. Just one of a dozen...

    E/V Nautilus

Tyboo wrote: Good morning, Dave. Do you happen to know Jerry Ostermiller, the long time director of the Maritime Museum? Yup. Also, Lynn worked for me a couple years as a lab tech. Jerry was active as a diver on ancient wrecks, years past. His interest in maritime archeology goes way...

    E/V Nautilus

Thanks for posting this, Mike. I saw this vessel down bound yesterday, I think, and was puzzled about it. Their research could establish whether there were humans living on our coastline 10,000 plus years ago, when sea level was a lot lower, and "the beach" was many miles west of where it is...

    TyBoo repower

Tyboo, give us a run up Youngs Bay, above the new YB bridge, OK? I wanna hear those 200 horses! Oh, high tide, of course!

    Broughtons August trip

From Oak Harbor, the Port Angeles ferry allows you to avoid all of I-5. BC ferries run about the same cost as the Port Angeles - Victoria ferry. The drive along Hood Canal is beautiful, albeit mostly on a curvy two lane highway. Agree the Anacortes to Sidney ferry sucks.

    Broughtons August trip

Terrific blog, Robbin! You really captured the heart and soul of the Broughtons! I especially enjoyed the segment on Billy Proctor, an institution as well as a wonderful character. Anyone looking for a sample of the way things were, just has to sit down with Billy for fifteen minutes. A...

Portland Cruise vessel, vs RedBull Event crowd.

The videos are worth viewing as an illustration of a situation that should never been allowed to develop. The Buoy 10 sports fishery down here at the mouth of the Columbia has a much greater potential for damage to life and limb as well as vessels, largely because the prime mooching waters are...

Port Harvey Marine Industrial Zoning Hearing Report 7/2017

Interesting discussion, and a situation similar to others in BC. My Canadian buddies tell me that aggressive criticism from the US is often counterproductive ... you all understand the history for that. Better to channel support, in words or funds, through a Canadian pressure group. I have a...

    Gulf Islands Advice

My apologies, John. Pretty much all the Gulf Islands have suitable campsites, with pit toilets. One nice site is on Prevost Island, with a decent beach, and a good anchorage. It is a short distance away from Ganges Harbour on Saltspring Island for resupply and an ice cream cone if you need...
