My experience with externally mounted transducers is that they lose bottom over a certain speed. Only a transducer mounted inside the hull that shoots through the hull will keep bottom at higher speeds. Rough water, turbulence, prop wash, air bubbles all affect the transducer mounted on the transom.

I had this same problem with a used outboard I ended up with. The fix was to pull apart the motor, have the head re bored, install new piston rings and start the break in procedure over. The age, hours on the motor and cost did not make financial sense.
