    Isabel’s untimely end

That's approximate overall average with the 70's. The 50's did slightly worse (3.3 +/- ?), but I made some beneficial refinements along the way, like adding Permatrims and slightly raising the mounting level of the engines. The 70's reaped the benefits. As I indicated, those are overall...

    Isabel’s untimely end

Welcome to the group. You sound like just the kind of guy who will benefit from and contribute to the collective experience of this place! I had a 23 and absolutely loved it. I can't really comment on comparisons with a 22 since I've never owned one or spent any real time on one. You will...

    AV Plate Height

First, congratulations on the boat! I'm no expert, but I do know that with a Permatrim on an outboard you want engine height such that when on plane there is just the thinnest film of water running over the top of the Permatrim. I had to raise my engines a notch to achieve that. Doing so...

Trimming for head and following seas

(I see Bob made much the same point while I was typing.) Another thing to remember about trim tabs and foils is that their effects are related directly to the speed of the boat. In neutral, or at anchor, or sitting at the dock, you can adjust the tabs and foils all you want and the attitude...

Help me get more fuel efficient!

I agree with T.R. Bauer's observations about horsepower. I had a slightly different boat (a Cape Cruiser Venture 23), but basically same type and size. I ran mostly with a very heavy load for long range cruising. My fuel efficiency actually improved just a little when I replaced my Yamaha...

    C-Dory 16 Cruiser first trip - IMPRESSED

Marty, that's an apt comparison, size-wise and ability-wise. (But I just CAN'T get past the sign stealing, and lying about it, and half-heartedly apologizing for it. I know my 16 would never have done that.) Our first boat was a 16, and we had many happy day and over-night trips on it. I was...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

I am enjoying your account of your grand voyage. I would second Bob's comments about Port McNeil. And that Blind Channel schnitzel is a real treat, isn't it!

Help me get more fuel efficient!

Another thing to check is the mounting height of your Motor. It is not uncommon for the motors to have been mounted too low. You want no more than the slightest film of water running over the top of your Permatrim when you are on plane.

    Searching the forums

If you are not familiar with it already, you might try Google Advanced Search. It can be pretty handy: https://www.google.com/advanced_search It has lines for employing Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT or AND NOT) and for searching or excluding exact quotes. It also allows you to limit your...

    Good place for fire extinguisher?

Here's what I did: Had to laugh at cbbernard's comment about banging his head on the door frame. I put foam padding on mine after I acquired several non-age-related creases in my forehead.

    Help with windless

I had a vertical windlass, and that was my solution as well. Unless I had a lot or rode out, one trip to the locker through the v-berth before retrieval did the trick. It was a little more of a hassle it I was soloing and anchored in very deep water. Then I would have to stop retrieving a...

    Help with windless

I believe the designation "vertical" or "horizontal" refers to the orientation of the motor shaft rather than the gypsy. Vertical windlasses are often preferred by those who want to save deck space, since the motor is mounted below the deck. A vertical windlass motor, therefore, or is also...

PNW 2022, Columbia River and San Juan Islands

I have been REALLY enjoying your account and pictures of your time on the Columbia. Thanks so much for posting. I have lived in SW Washington for more than 75 years, and have fished and traveled along the river some, but haven't spent nearly as much time there as I would like. It is one heck...

    I’m in a Florida state of mind…

We've had some terrific times visiting in Florida. I particularly liked the Naples area. The weather can be fantastic, or miserable. The coasts mitigate some of the summer heat, but bring their own weather worries and generally higher prices, too. I personally would be very wary of coastal...

    C-Dory Hull Shape(s)? 22 Cruiser

I believe the original models were completely flat starting well forward of the transom. Newer C-Dory's have a very slight (couple of degrees) deadrise at the stern. Are you sure you were looking at a C-Dory? How much of a "V" did you see? Pictures would help. I'm sure others with more...

    Keeping critters out

Never had the problem myself, but I know some people have used steel wool jammed into the wiring access hole as a way to slow down mice.
