    Fuel docks in SE Alaska

Inside Passage – Distance between fuel stops 2/15/2010 You can get to most places you'd want to go in a small boat if you can COMFORTABLY (with a good reserve to handle weather changes etc) go 140 nautical miles on a tank. If you have 200-300 NM range you have a lot more flexibility in your...

    C-Dory 22 Twin Engine Question

For your gee whiz, though rather off topic: New Moon's Volvo 44 diesel sterndrive setup includes electronic engine controls and shifting. There's a brief delay in shifting, maybe 1/2 second, which takes some getting used to, but I don't really notice it any more. Electronic engine control is...

Boat Charters to cruise the San Juan's

Not in the San Juans, but we've sailed chartered cats from The Moorings for a week or so each of the last five springs in the Abacos (Bahamas), BVI, or St Martin/St Barts area. Nice, but very spendy for so short a time. Wouldn't consider it if we weren't the sailing "crew" with others picking...

    Anchor/windlass operation

Exactly. In my first post I was trying to point out that we are careful to be sure we have a good set, and always cleat off when anchoring for the night (or even for a short time during the day unless it's unusually calm). But: we have not found it necessary to cleat off or otherwise...

    Why is that?

x2! (well, long ago I used to support IBM's systems, and I have recently succumbed to the lure of the smartphone) There are a few other sites I enjoy and learn from: Alaska Outdoors Forums, Boatdiesel, Cruisers Forum, and Trawler Forum. Salty Dogs (ifish), esp if you're into west coast tuna...

    Anchor/windlass operation

I have no idea how much holding power the clutch would permit when anchored - not enough. Our CD22 has anchored in 35-40 knots, and New Moon in 45, always cleated. Maybe I've been luckier than I should expect, but it seems pretty easy for me to tighten the clutch just so that only a very...

    Anchor/windlass operation

In 15 summers of cruising and many hundreds of anchorings with our Simpson/Lawrence 600GD windlass, we have never secured the anchor underway other than by the windlass itself. The anchor has never come loose, nor has it caused a problem with the windlass. I don't cleat off when trailering...

    West coast Vancouver island

20 years ago in July (wow - was it really that long?) we took our CD22 across on the ferry to Nanaimo, drove to Gold River, and spent two weeks on the coast, exploring all the inlets from Nootka Sound up to the SE side of the Brooks peninsula. Beautiful and remote country, lots of critters -...

How much anchor line/chain in the Pacific Northwest?

New Moon anchors all over BC and SE Alaska in 45-50 feet or less the vast majority of the time. Some inlets that are particularly steep-to at their head, where the outflow of a river creates a shelf, are easier to deal with safely if we can handle 60-65 feet - especially when spring tides range...

    Cold Weather Diesel

There are additives which reduce diesel's pour point and filter plug point. I've been using Stanadyne Performance Formula, which is said to do this. My experience is that starting when it's cold (my truck sits outside in Utah) is easier, less smoky, and the engine runs smoother and quieter...

    LED Anchor Light

Our boat had a Perko combined anchor and steaming light. The bulb sockets (in a not even close to waterproof enclosure) had been getting more and more corroded over the years, and had me taking the top off and monkeying with the bulbs to get both to be on at anchor several times last summer...

    Anchoring system advice needed

Just went out to the boathouse and measured. My Wichard shackle has the 8mm (5/16") pin. Looks like a 10mm pin might fit through the 1/4" G40 HT chain, but it would be very close - would that be a wear problem? I'm satisfied with the 8mm one - it shows little or no deformation after 13...

    Anchoring system advice needed

I've been using Wichard SS shackles for many years - plenty sturdy, and no rust. My recollection was a rating of 2700 kg, about 6,000 lb. Working load about 2,200 lb.

    Anchoring system advice needed

We replaced New Moon's 7.5 kg Bruce with a 10kg Rocna three years ago now. The Bruce was a good match for conditions in BC and SE AK. It usually set quickly, seemed to reset well when the wind changed direction, and never dragged except when the set was not really good, in soft mud or thick...

Does your trailer 'clunk ... ?

My surge brake trailer has been clunking away for 15 years and almost 70,000 miles. Seems to do so more when the actuator needs a bit of cleanup and lube. I try to keep the actuator sliding back and forth easily with lots of that sort of TLC. If it's particularly gummed up with road grit etc...

fuel tank question for C-Dory 22

FWIW, our 1991 C-Dory 22 Cruiser came new from the factory with the then optional 58-gallon aluminum tank, which was partitioned into two 29-gallon sections. With our 2-cycle Yamaha 90 and a heavy cruising load, we often needed the capacity. Sure made the stern heavier when it was full.

Need a 2-3 hp motor for dinghy

We have a Mariner 2hp 2-stroke (Yamaha with a Mariner sticker on it). It's 25 years old and runs like a top. Bought it for a canoe, and now use it for our dinghy. Weighs only 22lb - really! Lighter and much quieter than the air-cooled Honda 2. Runs our dinghy 3-4 miles on its internal 1-quart...

Will you help me build my boat?

Hi zebcokid! FWIW, I'd suggest a Cruiser rather than an Angler. Here's my thinking: When we first discovered C-Dory we had been planning on a fishing boat, maybe even as small as a 17' Boston Whaler. The CD22 Cruiser expanded our thinking - a really decent camper on the water. Within a few...
