    SleepyC on Vancouver Island 2016

I don't think so. The sandless primer is to make sure the bottom paint sticks, without having to give the gelcoat some "tooth" by sanding. Sure worked well for me.

    2019 Inside Passage

Hi Colby, If you could swing it, I would certainly suggest more than a month. Even with two or three months, we find that picking either BC or SE Alaska is preferable to trying to see the whole Inside Passage. Too many miles, too many beautiful places you have to pass by, not enough time to...

    SleepyC on Vancouver Island 2016

Hi Mike, Did it myself, on a 10,000+ pound 26-footer that I could not figure out how to safely lift from the trailer. So I left the parts covered by the trailer bunks unpainted. I figure the barnacles in those spots get pretty well squashed when I pull her out onto the trailer.... Careful...

    SleepyC on Vancouver Island 2016

Barnacles did not seem like such a big deal when we did 2-3-week cruises, but after several 2-3-month summers in BC and SE Alaska, followed by many days of hard work removing barnacles etc, I decided to do bottom paint on New Moon. Did it myself using water-based ablative Pettit Hydrocoat...

Hot Springs Cove/Tofino/Vancouver Island West Coast

We launched at Gold River (many years ago), cruised out through Nootka Sound, and traveled all the inlets up through the southern part of the Brooks Peninsula. It was great! Wanted to do Clayoquot Sound too, but did not have enough time. Did some research for a subsequent trip on a BC...

    Radar/chartplotter combo

Chartplotter is mandatory, and fixed-mount is better. I would recommend a combination radar and chartplotter for most bang for the buck, especially in a small boat with relatively limited space for big screens. With more space and more $, I prefer a separate screen for each. That said, we...

    Voyages

Dr. Bob, It has been a great pleasure to read your posts and interact with you, and to meet you on the waters of SE Alaska. Thanks for sharing so much, and best of luck with the procedure today.

Equiping a C-Dory for Lake Powell

At Lake Powell, we carry a Fortress as a spare and stern anchor. There are a number of nifty places that are shallow enough but too skinny to anchor with enough swing room around us. West Canyon comes to mind. So we get out the stern anchor and anchor fore and aft. Takes a little practice...

    Battery Management Venture 23

I've used AGM's for both house and starting banks on New Moon for 14-15 years. First set of house AGM's (Deka g31) lasted 11 years, first set of starters (Optima blue-top 34M) lasted 7 years. In my Cummins diesel truck Optima red-top 34's lasted 10 years. A number of folks who go with AGM's...

Where C-Dory fits in the scheme of things

Our 22 Cruiser was our first boat (other than a canoe). We really didn't have any idea how terrific it would be. Cruising big western lakes and the Inside Passage - Wow! We learned so much, saw so much beautiful country, and had so much fun. How lucky we were to begin our boating adventures...

    Frustrated!

To get CE on my laptop to communicate with the AMEC AIS on my new-to-me boat, I had to fiddle with CE's data port settings. Would not work until I got the data baud rate correct (115200 in my case).

C-Map NT+ chart cards for British Columbia

New-to-me 2002 Nordic Tug 37 has a Raymarine 631 chartplotter. I plan to use Coastal Explorer as primary chartplotter, but would like to have chart cards for the 631 as backup. Currently have: NA-C801 Dixon Entrance to Icy Bay (covers SE Alaska). NA-C701 Olympia to Port Neville (also described...

SE Alaska & the Yukon River 2016

Hi Jay, Any chance you could post that advice on rounding Cape Omanney? (or have you already done so and I missed it?)

    Bottom Painting

I put Pettit Hydrocoat (water-based ablative) on New Moon ten years ago. On bare fiberglass, using two coats of sandless primer and 2-3 coats of paint. She's spent every summer since cruising SE Alaska waters. I've added a coat or two on the sides down to the chines, and on the transom, but...

New (to me) boat in Anacortes - Where to get kicker?

Thanks again folks, In hindsight, it occurred to me that I might be stretching the limits mentioning that New Moon would be for sale. Since I have alrady made that mistake, and there's some interest, I might as well provide a revised version of my writeup - I keep thinking of stuff I forgot to...

    Kicker motor

In 25 years we've been saved by the kicker several times, often in remote locations where help would be hard to get, or not available in time to avoid disaster. Breakdowns happen every so often if you do as many miles as we do. We had one sterndrive failure, one when the connection between...

New (to me) boat in Anacortes - Where to get kicker?

Thanks all, very much - I am excited! I wrote up a description of New Moon, below. New Moon is a Bounty 257 Offshore Pilot, 25'7" hull length, 8’6” beam. With bow pulpit and swim step about 29’ overall. Built for us in 1997/1998 by Bounty Motor Yachts in Central Point, OR. Green hull and...

New (to me) boat in Anacortes - Where to get kicker?

I am in the process of changing boats, after 25 years as a trailer boat cruiser. It'll be a big jump this time, to a 37-foot Nordic Tug. New Moon will be for sale. I'm thinking of mounting a 9.9 High-Thrust Yamaha on the swim step for salmon trolling. Any recommendations where to get the...

    From fishing to cruising transition

Hi Steve, I don't think swell vs current works the same way as wind vs current, or at least not as much so. Swells are leftover oscillations that continue to travel along the water surface quite a distance from where the wind created them, even if there is little or no wind where they now are...
