    Intuition to Alaska - 2021

FWIW, I arrived in Ketchikan yesterday, after 15 days doing the "Transit through Canadian waters". Traveled at 7-8 knots, lost three days to waiting for weather. Following their rules, it's not too tough. Bring enough food for the duration, and your written transit plan to give to CBSA when...

    Intuition to Alaska - 2021

Read the website section "Transit through Canadian waters". You may not stop in a marina, except for fuel/water/essentials, but if you check in with CBSA and provide your plan, travel directly and anchor every night, and follow the rules, a US boat may go from one part of the US to another - WA...

    Intuition to Alaska - 2021

As Canada's web site makes clear, and as I and a friend have verified in two separate calls to CBSA, you CAN stop for fuel. The operative section is "Transit through Canadian waters". Expand the links within it. https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/trave ... ons/border When you submit your...

For anchorage info, the best guides are the Douglass 'Exploring' series. One for S coast BC, one for N coast BC, and one for SE AK.

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

Hi Les, I just went through the ArriveCAN app. It's no sweat, except that it wants to know BC address where I will be quarantining - not just "on my boat". The CBSA agent said to enter the address of the marina where I check into BC. The reporting sites for small vessels are listed on this...

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

Hi Les, Your timing for questions is good. Just a few minutes ago I spoke with CBSA in Sidney BC, to verify my understanding of the "Transit through Canadian waters" rules. No surprises, except that I do need to fill out the info requested by the ArriveCAN app. And submit my written travel...

    Anchor choice

Same experience when I replaced a Bruce with a Rocna. Not only did it self-launch, but also it set with a bang. Great improvement on my 26-footer.

    vaccination

My wish list would include safer and less restricted travel on the Inside Passage for US boaters.

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

Hi Chromer, Look at this web site for Alaska's rules: https://covid19.alaska.gov/travelers/ It seems we would need to arrive AK with proof of a negative test (probably fairly recent - have not looked at that yet), or pay $250 to get one on arrival, and self-quarantine until the result comes...

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

Hi Jay, Bella Bella is very much a First Nations place. It's a sizable town, pop about 2,000 IIRC, with an airport, on Campbell Island. Shearwater is mainly just a marina on Denny Island, with little population. Both have fuel and water, though in dry years Shearwater sometimes has very...

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

My cruising buddy, who lives in Sidney BC, just spoke with a CBSA person in Victoria. She said the rules for transiting through BC to SE AK are very much as the Canada website describes (see post 3), though they could change of course. It seems likely we may have to show a recent negative COVID...

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

Those rules for transit by water through BC to Alaska are set out in the link I quoted in post #3. If those rules are still in effect, a US boat need not go from WA through BC to AK without stopping - just follow the rules. OTOH, a US boat may not enter BC from WA, poke around in BC, and...

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

Jay, I think that last paragraph on reporting requirements is just restating the general rule on border crossing that has always been the case. Worth asking again, however.

    Transiting BC, WA-AK

FWIW, The quickest trip we've made from WA to AK was Anacortes to Ketchikan, 671 nm in 12 days. Average 56 nm/day, traveling in our Nordic Tug at 7-7.5 knots. We were lucky we did not have to wait long for weather conducive to rounding Cape Caution, or crossing the Dixon Entrance. We didn't...

    Fit in my garage

Width could be an issue too. We had our trailer built 2" narrower than usual so we could just barely slide our CD22 into the garage.

launching and retrieving larger than 22 cruiser

FWIW, We went from a 22 Cruiser to a diesel I/O powered 26 footer that weighed upwards of 10,000 lb on the water. For 10+ years I towed launched and retrieved by myself. It had to be done carefully, planning ahead, not being in a hurry, and minimizing risk, but always went well.
