    Winter Blues

We have been watching these RAN Sailing videos on YouTube to help get through the non boating winter. They are very well done and although they are sailing I think many would enjoy their story. What are some other’s favorites to get through the off season...

Removing the alcohol stove REPLACING with Wallace

I sure wish there was a bit smaller version of the Dickinson Bristol made that would fit a Cdory. That would be sweet. I spent some time on an old WW2 MV in southeast AK in the winter with a Dickinson diesel stove. Very nice for heat and cooking...

Do you strap your boat down when trailering?

The RCMP said a boat has to be secured by the bow and stern. He said he had investigated several accidents where only the bow was secured. I saw a large jet boat in a sudden stop ride over the bow roller, over the top of the truck cab and several hundred feet down the pavement on the keel.

Do you strap your boat down when trailering?

Yes strap it down. I believe it is illegal to move any unsecured load of any kind in all states. It is definitely illegal in British Colombia. I got stopped by an RCMP on Vancouver Is last year. Significant fine although the Mounty was kind enough to give me a warning, but not move it until...

    SATPAQ Messenger

Good points Bob and Greg. I still believe the PLB is the best tool if in serious need of rescue. The NOAA SARSAT system, professional rescue coordination center and finally the 121.5 capability provide good assurance. I do like and use the text capability of Inreach but would still rely on a...

    SATPAQ Messenger

Just curious if anyone has used one of these devices yet? We carry both a PLB and Garmin Inreach for our backcountry and boating trips. They are different tools with different capabilities. The SATPAQ device is attractive because of the low upfront cost and no monthly plan as Inreach requires...

    Boat show repower deals

Appreciate all the responses. By a wide margin Sportscraft appears to be the best deal on a Honda 90 and is offering a boat show rebate. As always, thanks all for sharing your wisdom. Ken

    Boat show repower deals

Has anyone ever received a significant repower deal through one of the northwest boat shows? We are in the market this winter and seems I have heard people suggest shopping during a boat show. Besides, it would be a good excuse to attend. Ken

    Alaska Series dinghy questions

We have the same dingy. Hopefully your questions can be answered by the Gary King website. http://www.alaskaseries.com/ I see their speciations show a capacity of a crew on 1-2. We have had three plus adults in ours for short runs. Hope this helps. Ken

Twin Honda 40’s to twin Honda 60’s

Thanks Jay. There is a local Tohatsu dealer so aill check to see what they can do. Also, for you and others with twins and lack of swim step, how do you manage getting on and off your dingy?

Twin Honda 40’s to twin Honda 60’s

Jay, I am following your posts with great interest as we consider re-power options. When you were considering the Tohatsu, were you looking at the BFT60 or the MFS60. With rough calculations, the total weight deference between a single Honda 90 and my current 6hp Tohatsu kicker, compared to...

    San Juan’s Crabbing

We plan to do a couple weeks in the San Juans in September. I see the season is open through the end of September. Is it worth buying a non resident license? We are only interested in a few to eat and show some friends who have never done it. Thanks in advance. Ken

Twin Honda 40’s to twin Honda 60’s

Thanks Jay. We have a Tohatsu dealer about an hour away so will see what they can do. I’m happy with the 99 BF75 but plan to do more long range cruising as you have and would like more reliably. So unless someone puts a small diesel outboard out under $12,000 🙂, will likely go with Tohatsu or...

Twin Honda 40’s to twin Honda 60’s

Jay, I thought I remembered you mentioning in the past considering Tohatsu. With the Tahatsu being less cost for the same motor, what was your thought process? We are thinking of replacing our 2,000 hr ‘99 Honda BF75 in the next year with either the 90 hp Honda or Tohatsu.

    Epoxy Bedding

Thanks Bob. That makes good sense to attach cleats, then screw into cleats. I don’t have much experience with epoxy. Can you recommend a particular product? Is it available at the local Napa?

    Epoxy Bedding

I purchased new fuel tanks and want to properly bed the tank hold down screws with epoxy. At the same time I intend to take care of the bilge pump screws and cabin cabinet screws. With a search of the forums I did not find any information on the type of epoxy or depth of the balsa core that...
