    too cold

I guess it was the daffodils and tulips in the garden that convinced me to take advantage of the opening of prawn fishing in Saanich Inlet on Saturday. I checked the weather for Haro Strait and it looked workable. Of course by the time I got round to the Inlet the wind was blowing much harder...

    Victoria Boat Show

I also thought it was a good small boat/fishing show. I always enjoy chatting with the PBH guys. They really are a class act. Mike told me that the 22 was probably sold and they had a Venture on the way. The CD's are selling well but as everyone knows the higher end stuff like Ranger is the...

    09/06 - 09/08 - Vancouver Island Gathering 2013

Hi Mike I live in Sidney so if you would like me to help out by dropping by the marina or whatever let me know by PM. I can't take on the project personally as I have a busy year ahead with a bit of traveling already booked and more to come but can certainly assist. September would probably be...

    Adequate anchor for 22' Angler?

I'm sure there are many opinions here, a lot depending on the conditions in which you are anchoring. We boated for nearly 20 years on the Chespeake and anchored out a lot. There were all sorts of gunk holes for the weekend (Still Pond, Chester River, Severn River etc. etc. for those who know the...

    Wallas stove question

I fully agree! Though the control system we have should always have the starting battery available I always carry a jump start battery unit from an automotive store. I charge it every 6 weeks or so. Don't really have room for the generator.

23 Venture forward locker - Advice please

You have clarified my post perfectly, many thanks. Your pictures in your album also show exactly what I am talking about and saved me the effort. Many thanks! We use the big area for life jackets and I wanted to make it easier to access. The cleats may work and i think i will try that solution...

23 Venture forward locker - Advice please

Many thanks for the great suggestions. I like the cleats idea. I may try this at the forward edge of the board to see if they, alone, will allow me to lift without it without it jumping out of its recess. I'll take a couple of pictures over the weekend for clarity. I am also thinking about...

23 Venture forward locker - Advice please

On the 2008 Venture 23 that we have there are three lockers in the forward cabin. The two at the sides have hatches over them. The forward locker is great for keeping sleeping gear etc. but the cover is loose, a large piece of plastic board. There is a tendency to move forward when opened...

    7.7 Quake in BC

On Vancouver Island we are are always keeping an ear open for the Big One and I was very disappointed with the Canadian response time for this quake. Seems I am not the only one as there will be a government inquiry. I assume anyone who lives in the PNW area has the alerts on their mobile phone...

    Manouvering a C-Dory

My own experience started with Royal Navy training on three old wooden U-boat tenders. They presumably went to the UK after WWII and were great for practice . Two were about 28 ft with single inboard, one with a wheel and the other with a tiller. On both the helmsman relied on a fellow crew...

Now I really like that approach. Wish I'd thought of it.

    Marinauts on the Brat Map

At the risk of raising the kind of issues that come up when we encourage our kids to leave home  can I ask when it would be appropriate for the Marinauts to have their own forum? I know I am not a major contributor here, rather a student of the experience of others, but I like the idea of...

The Irish & Brits are at it again...

Don't worry about not finding the carrier. When I first heard this it was US carrier and a Newfoundland lighthouse. Later it was a Mexican frigate and a Panamanian lighthouse and most recently a German frigate and a Danish lighthouse. It's like real estate......location, location, location...

    Mercury Verado 150hp on 25

I've spent 40+ years in power transmission and drive systems since graduating from college in marine engineering. I deliberately stay out of drive discussions because almost everything is a compromise when it comes to propulsion. There are very few absolutes. I hope bureausaw will forgive me...

    Trailer Jack $#%!!!&

OK, I'll put my cojones on the line. The tube in SSwould be simple. Now you think about the next weak link, and then the next. How about cutting SS gears? Not $o attractive! You wouldn't want to pay the price. How long do you keep a trailer, or a boat for that matter? Think of 10 years and...

At the risk of being a s**t stirrer. Would having twins have done the job as well as a kicker? 😁

    Insurance nightmare....please help!

The lawyer approach is a good one though I am sure that he will confirm what Matt says above. "Guests" generally don't pay to come aboard. They pay chip in for gas if you were taking a buddy out fishing, as an example, but only their fair share. Have a read of your policy. It may explicitly not...
