I think that’s a really respectable number, higher than I imagined.

Seattle Boat Show - Such a sparse showing

It's an interesting time in the pleasure boat market and I'm rather glad that I am not making the decisions for a manufacturer. The boom days before the global financial crisis are gone and the market seems to have recovered but the "geezers" have probably bought their boats and later...

Toland 18 and cruiser 22 comparison

Just as an aside, the Venture 23 was mentioned. If you find one (and they are scarce and will be more expensive) you may be attracted by the more finished interior if you are to spend a good deal of time aboard. Watch out for the towing weight. The Venture can be 1000 lbs heavier than a 22 Cruiser.

    AIS receiver and display

I actually think this may not be a bad idea for someone who does not already have an integrated system. On our Venture 23 I had an excellent Standard Horizon radio with a built-in AIS receiver and it worked well. The only difficulty was that the radio was in the overhead and the screen was very...

Yep its been cold in parts of Canada this winter

Tough decision in this bit of Canada today! The weather forecast called for overcast and temp. of about 8deg (46). Choice was to take the boat out for the first run of the year or take the bike for a ride. Chose the latter as the boat is better when we have clear skies. Rode 42km (26 miles)...

Yep its been cold in parts of Canada this winter

Well, Vancouver Island is slightly more northern. I just put a couple of picture in the album taken on New Years eve. It was a glorious day and I was out cruising for about 4 hours. The temperature was about 6-7 deg C, about 44 deg. US, but the heater in the cabin made it t-shirt warm. I try...

4 blade vs. 3 blade propellers

"Three blade props are more efficient than four blade props. Two blade props re more efficient than three. Three blade props are smoother than two and four are smoother than three. " Sounds right on! :wink

4 blade vs. 3 blade propellers

By changing the prop diameter you have changed the overall drive profile and if that brings you within WOT spec. that is likely to be the most efficient.

4 blade vs. 3 blade propellers

.... One bladed props are most efficient. (Don't laugh, it's been done on airplanes.) I thought part of the performance improvement with SS props is because the material is harder and there is less blade flexing under load. This does have some drawbacks as far as the drive train is concerned...

4 blade vs. 3 blade propellers

Hi Chuck, I know it seems counter-intuitive. Here's one of the best explanations: https://people.well.com/user/pk/SPAprofboat.html As far as undue stress is concerned one certainly has to design for the loads imposed.

4 blade vs. 3 blade propellers

Ok, I’ll give you a couple of rules of thumb based on years designing marine propulsion systems, all of which have caveats but all of which have data to back them up. Then I will wait for the storm to descend. Three blade props are more efficient than four blade props. Two blade props re more...

    An opportunity?

I fully agree on the twins. Even without the trailer, $150k is just about smack in the middle of the gap in the Ranger line. Now I guess we have to think Cutwater as well.

    An opportunity?

This Rosborough is certainly a contender to fill what seems to me to be an opportunity in the Ranger line. I'm not too worried about hull thickness. Early FGRP boats were also thick and heavy but one hears of very few hull failures when a pleasure boat is operated in conditions for which it was...

That's an excellent point! The 26 would be a great mid-point. Thanks

    An opportunity?

Once a c-brat always a c-brat so I hope I am not forgotten. Last year we traded our beloved Venture 23 from 2008 and bought the dream, a 25 SC Ranger tug. Let me say emphatically that I don’t regret the move one bit but every boat is a compromise and there are pluses and minuses about both...
