    Favorite flashlight?

Everyday Carry is a StreamLight ProTac90. Small, light, and in the belt carry it can be on and pointed where I am going if I have both hands full. Works great for spotlighting house numbers and dark steps. On the boat I have a WM rechargeable, smaller than the one linked above, but also I...

    C-Dory Sightings

Hi John, Nice article with a well rounded discussion of the downsizing process and the attributes of the TomCat. Would be glad to welcome them to the C-BRATS fold. Wonder if they are still around, or were ever active here. The post-article note says "This article originally appeared in the...

    Posts since last visit issue

Gerhard, I have checked in several time in the las week and it has always brought me the correct list of threads, from about 200, for the first time in a couple weeks to I think 34 today. I'm using Chrome, Windows 10, and HP laptop. Sometimes, what you are using to connect does change what...

    TomCat towing length?

Those TomCats sit high enough on the trailers I would think they would tow with the engine down, (no need to tilt) so that would shave a few feet off the length for towing that model. I might be wrong :disgust It happened once  already today  Harvey SleepyC :moon

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Hey Sandy, Patience is a virtue, and hurrying can be threatening. A good friend of mine used to have this saying as his tag line here. "The most dangerous thing on a Cruising boat is a schedule." Enjoy and be safe. Thanks for the tip on the track. Works great now. Harvey SleepyC :moon

    B+/B2 ais

For me it would be a hard choice. If I never boated in the fog some times it might be a week hangin out waiting, or said another way, What makes the fog go away is wind, so I kind of prefer the fog. However, I have had times when the radar was the champ, and times when the AIS was the champ...

Replacing the Sink's Hand Pump Water Faucet

I have considered replacing my electric with a foot pump, almost every time I use the water. I'm sure, even trying to be careful, I use way more water with the electric than I would with a manual pump. Just sayin. Harvey SleepyC :moon

    Is AIS in the house?

Agree, AIS cannot break the laws of Physics, but in reality, working around in the islands, both San Juans and the east side of Vancouver Island, I frequently can see the ferries, tugs, water taxis and large commercial ships, when they are on the other sides of islands from me. Yes, their...

    B+/B2 ais

MaxDad, You hit the nail on the head. Yes, Radar (Use as described above, use it and keep it on so you can understand what you see on the screen and how it relates to what is around you. Also, cheap and easy, a radar reflector. The 10 inch round disc increased your radar return by about 50%...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Hey Sand, I'm caught up again. Good to see you in Winter Harbor. Take you time, and enjoy the moment. Adventure cruising equals hours of pleasant boredom punctuated by moments to hours of "What am I doing here, and Why" running circles around in your head. Following with interest and...

    Locating compass on 16' cruiser

Well, maybe the compass will have an affect on the radio, but I would bet my bottom dollar, that the radio, that close to the compass, does have an adverse effect on the compass. You could do like the early Ranger tugs, (an maybe they still do this), get the proper distance by mounting the...

    charter plotter suggestion

The two primary critical pieces of information from the AIS screen are: 1. CPA = Closest Point of Approach, which is the distance you will be from the target in . . . 2. TCPA = Time to Closest Point of Approach. Minutes and Seconds until you are at CPA and then the other important piece of info...

    Best clarity VHF fixed units

First off, YES, you will need to adjust the squelch again  sometime, maybe every time out. Good point about the antenna. Make sure it is tight and corrosion free. No nicks or real sharp bends in the coax. Yes, I do have a VHF with the last call recording. It is the ICOM M-506, and...

    Sandys counterclockwise circumnavigation Vancouver Island

Sandy, Canoe Cove just down towards Minstrel Island and a left through the channel should have good I-net and and fuel. But you may not get this from where you are. All the best. Harvey SleepyC :moon Your not far from here, but it has changed.

    charter plotter suggestion

Forrest, the sidescsan does not see out to the surface, but looks out at about a 45-60 degree angle, so that one edge of that is looking down, and then about 45-60 degrees out from down on each side. That angle will probably be below the kicker interference. I believer that angle varies...

    Deadhead

This year has reportedly been one of the highest in floating timber, deadheads, chunk wood, or what ever it is called (regional), in Pacific NW waters. Considerably higher incidence of contact and sighting for the R2AK boats and other cruisers in the PNW waters. Those "logs" are not all lost...

    Is AIS in the house?

BRINGING THIS ONE BACK FOR SOME UPDATES Recently I have been watching a YouTube series by a Merchant Marine Professional tug captain. ( TimBatSea ) He has recently decided to become a recreational mariner as well, and purchased a 40 ft sailboat. I started watching him while he was working in...

Plus One on Andy's recommendation for Alert Bay, but also adding, go right, down the street to the totem park, and past that to Duchesses Bannock. Way good, and really worth the walk. Tell her Hi from me. to if you are there. Harvey SleepyC :moon

“Height on Trailer” for a 19’ or 22’ Angler?

On my Pacific trailer, I lowered the bunks almost 4 inches. Made a big different in boat access, launching and trailering. That combined with even deflating your tires could give you 6-8 inches. Add the steel beam for the header, and you might have what you need. Harvey SleepyC :moon
