Very Hypothetical Question Re: CD 25

That was the light that I used to write my response. I would definitely power it conventionally, with the mods I mentioned: slightly beefing up the kicker with a higher hp and definitely using one with an oversized lower unit and prop (often call high thrust), remote control remote steering...

    Garmin versus Lowrance

I just did this dance about a year and a half ago and came out with a Lowrance rig, and I like it a lot. I do the same type of fishing you do, and I love the sidescan/downscan. The capability of the structurescan fades a bit as you get to the depths you are fishing, but it still works...

Very Hypothetical Question Re: CD 25

Hypothetically, I'd just power the boat normally. One could efficiently run at those speeds using one of a pair of twins, or with a large 150hp main, or with a 9.9 kicker. I think in this setup I might go slow with a kicker and keep the main for limited use. If I were planning to run like...

    2017 trip to Alaska

You can hop on the AMHS from several ports in Southeast and cross the Gulf to get to places like Seward, Homer, Cordova, Whittier, Valdez and Kodiak. You would likely have to rent a truck and trailer, but I'll bet that could be done. If you are trying to get creative about something like...

    Best money I've ever spent

Oh man, it's incredible how different costs are for these kinds of services. Up north here that would be a steal. I'd bet that kind of thorough attention and time would cost 5x that. You did very well.

    Flush the engines

We leave the engine tilted down and the fresh water drains. It's also not very cold here in Cordova. We haven't seen winter in some time. I probably wouldn't do this in cold weather, and can't really think of a time that I have, but most days its above freezing, and below at night. If you do...

    Flush the engines

I have the same issue, 2003 honda BF90 though. My dealer advised that when I keep my boat in the harbor during winter when the water is off, and don't flush it, that I should consider not tilting up my engines. He indicated that I would drain parts of the cooling system allowing salt to...

    downrigger setup

Tom, I sent you a PM awhile back but haven't heard from you. If you are like me, you miss a lot of messages.

To what does this tube connect in my lower unit and why is

That's what I do now, but have to accomodate for more drag as the season goes on and the bottom gets a little buhsier!! I use the force mostly and let my downriggers tell me. I can pretty much tell by how far they blowback if I'm going too fast. I'm never going too slowly.

    Fixing numerous pits/porosity in gelcoat

I'm a big fan of preval sprayer for gelcoat spraying. Using a two-part system means you mix it all together and then put it in the sprayer, so these become disposable (even though they would be reusable with a latex paint), but if you prep everything you can get a lot done in one shot. They...

To what does this tube connect in my lower unit and why is

I guess that's what I was asking. I should really phrase things more carefully. I'm looking for a digital speedo. Most of the speedos available go to 60mph and start at 5mph. so no good. And I agree that the physics of a pitot tube speedo make it more accurate at high speeds, as doubling...

    My hotwater heater

This. You got very good advice above, however I think all is well. I'd be shocked if your eu2000 did anything besides raise its RPM when the hot water heater came on. If the protection circuitry continued to be happy when the engine revved just enjoy your shower!

To what does this tube connect in my lower unit and why is

I have the same tube and have always wanted to connect it but have not done so yet. While my GPS does give good SOG, I like to know my speed through water while trolling cos you catch more fish that way! The currents around these parts get fairly rippin'. I've produced trolling while moving...

    Running inlets or river mouths

I can put you in contact with instructors who can help you learn to do this more challenging stuff. This was a good long thread with lots of advice, but on thing I'd like to emphasize is that your boat is a really good one, and it can handle a lot more than most captains. That gets said a lot...

    Captain's license

I just want to point out one or two things. I work on boats as much as I want to (for the most part), and have a team of others who do the same. We don't have captains licenses, but we are able to work on the water, are all excellent boat operators, instructors, etc. We are frequently...

Roller trailer question for the brain trust.

I don't trailer my CD22 very far or very fast. I do trailer flat bottom jet boats all over, on and off road. I launch and recover where there are no ramps. With that in mind, I can offer this insight: 1. Straps straps straps. Of you have tow eyes on your transom that's the best thing to...

    Radar question

Sorry if I'm repeating what you already read. I have that radar on a boat at work and have similar lights, etc. a dinghy with aluminum oars attached, spotlights, and other antennae and it doesn't bother the radar a bit. Radar can't really see round things very well. It likes flat surfaces...

    Boating mishap

Among the many things I do, I am a wilderness medic. In some cases this allows us to perform treatments that are usually only for physicians in hospitals. At our most recent recert training our instructor heavily espoused povidone iodine solution for wound care and discouraged the use of...
