    Shots fired! Boater down!

I've never understood why Mr. Least Heat-Moon couldn't just slow down when he got into big waves on Lake Erie.

record manatee deaths in Florida due to weather

Thanks for the correction. It irks me that I was helping to propagate another myth produced by the people interested in commercial gain instead of natural beauty.

record manatee deaths in Florida due to weather

There were a lot of deaths last year, and in fact I came on the carcass of a young manatee floating in the river. You can see photos here: http://smittypaddler.com/cds/cdn/fl10/Feb/d100218p.htm I would've thought it was too early, even if it's been exceptionally cold, for the water temp to...

    Living Aboard

For the past three years I've trailered my C-Dory 22 Cruiser to the St Johns River in Florida and lived on it for several months at a time. I do this alone, and have plenty of storage space at home, so storage isn't a problem. It would definitely be crowded for two people, I think. If my wife...

    Folding Boarding Platform

I normally use a Fortress lightweight aluminum anchor, and it works fine in the silty bottoms on the Mississippi River. But I've had no luck with it anchoring in Florida's rivers, where the bottom is a hard tangled mass of roots and hard sand. I don't need much anchoring power on a...

    Florida in March

    Correction; it's the Garrison Bight City Marina. Here's a link http://www.keywestcity.com/department/d ... ?fDD=13-78

    Florida in March

It's been 5 years since I was there, but Garrison Bight Municipal Marina was a great place then, at a very reasonable price. Key West is too good a place to miss.

I've ordered the map at the link; looks like what I've been searching for.

    The Upper Ocklawaha

This year when I head for Acosta Creek Harbor on the St Johns, I plan on going up through the lock and exploring as far up the Ocklawaha as water depths will allow. Does anybody know of a source for information on water depths, landings, etc., on the Ocklawaha? Is there enough water to get a...

retrieve without getting in the water?

I just strip off a lot of strap from the winch, climb on the tongue and tightrope it down to hook it on to the bow. I don't get wet, most of the time.

Just Missed a Real Trailering Disaster

I had a similar experience with the nut for the ball coming loose. Now in addition to checking at each stop for gas, the hubs for heat with my hand, the trailer lights and tires, I also check that nut, and have a wrench in the car to tighten it, though it's never come loose after that one time...

    Hot and Cold trailer hubs

I have a double axle trailer for my CD22, and as I travel I run around putting my hand on each hub whenever I make a stop for gas, etc. I've never found any of the hubs with more than about body temperature (98F). I'm no mechanic, but I'd be alarmed if any of the hubs were warmer than that...

    Winterizing a CD 22

On a spring boating trip I nearly had a heart attack because the cockpit floor was filling with water, until I realized a guest had accidentally turned on the wash-down pump which I'd failed to drain the previous fall, causing the housing to crack when it froze during the winter.

Marine Chart App for Motorola Droid X

I've used Navionics on my HTC Incredible Droid when cruising the Mississippi. One advantage, it shows depths (but only in fathom increments), which aren't shown on the ACOE charts, since they only guarantee 9 feet inside the channel, and nothing else matters to them. I don't like the small...

Has anyone tried towing their C-dory this way?

I used to see rigs like this going down the highway, getting 4mpg, and think conspicuous consumption, with a sneer. But I've come to realize I was just jealous. If I had the money, that would be me; it looks like a great lifestyle.

My Stupid BlackBerry and Advice Sought on Android Phones!

If Pat despises Windoze he's a genius (we think alike, you know :-))). Seriously, I'd like to read the review if you can post a link, though I'll bet it was written by someone in Redmond.

My Stupid BlackBerry and Advice Sought on Android Phones!

Windoze on my phone? Not!!! The Android runs a version of Linux, which I've used since the 80's, and never once been invaded by a computer virus or had my system hacked, and I've never bought anti-virus software, nor had the need, on Linux.

    Netbooks with Windows and Android

In defense of the Android, I have an HTC Incredible, and love it. My favorite app is from Navionics. They've broken up all the NOAA charts into three chunks, East, Midwest, and West, each downloadable for $10. I used it for navigation on the Mississippi, and was very satisfied. It even shows...
