    Shallow water depth sounder?

Anyone got any tips on a shallow water depth sounder? The specs all seem to limit the shallow water display to three (3) feet or more. We run into very shallow bays, and up small creeks many times and it'd be nice to know when we get to that one (1) foot depth before the motor skeg touches...

    4 vs. 3 blade propeller

Ken -- Thanks, I'm going to pick up the 4 blade and try her out on the local inland lake this week and see how she compares to the 3. One of 'em will become the spare is the 4-blade runs well. I can run 6000 rpm with the 3 blade lightly loaded. -- Chuck

    4 vs. 3 blade propeller

My Honda 50 came on the boat with a 3x11.1x13 propeller. Honda (and my local dealer) has an available 4x10.6x13 propeller. Half an inch smaller diameter, same pitch, more blade surface. Any reason to get or not get the 4 blade version? My math tells me they're both going to run the same...

    Permatrim Hydrofoils

The shape looks more like a trim tab than a hydrofoil. There's no wing shape to it like the SST, etc. What's it do to top speed? -- Chuck

New member welcomes advice on purchase of 22' Cruiser

Dave -- I spent a lifetime in sailboats from the Thistle on up. Finally a J/24 followed by a San Juan 28. I doubt we used the SJ 100 hours in the last 10 years we had it and she sat at her dock for 4 summers without moving beyond the harbor. Dropped down to the lil 16 Cruiser and even though...

    Pricing question on a '83 16' angler

I want some of whatever that guy is smoking 8) . On a 21 year old salt water boat with the original small 2 cycle engine, all you're buying is the hull and MSRP on a new 16 Angler hull is under $12K. No accessories on the boat is actually an advantage. No need to strip out obsolete...

A day of remembrance and gratitude!

Memorial Day honors those who gave their lives for their country. Died in battle or otherwise in service during combat operations. No veteran meets that standard. Veterans have their own day, please don't cheapen next Memorial Day by honoring them, or anyone else -- Geez, we're getting...

Wrong holiday! Veterans Day is 11 November. Memorial Day is 30 May and isn't the tiniest bit about veterans, or even dead veterans. -- Chuck

    fridge users please help

Deep cycle batteries are rated in amp hours. One amp drawn from the battery in an hour is one amp hour. 2.5 amps drawn from the battery in 10 hours is 25 amp hours. Pretty straight math. Problem is battery amp hour ratings are highly overstated on the labels. A rule of thumb I've used for...

    fridge users please help

A quick glance at the BoatUS catalog on page 803 shows a small refrigerator (3.6cu ft) with a draw of 2.8 amps, well within the capability of even my Honda 50. The 1.7 cu ft model at the bottom of the page draws 2.5 amps. One of these will pull 25 amp hours overnight so you won't need your...

    Attention to detail

If my employees were wasting valuable production indexing these screws I'd be POed. Time is money. But I've not had the cover off mine. Maybe I can peek tonight at at least one fitting. I just checked the grip screws on several of my pistols and they're all willy whacky! A quick glance...

    Attention to detail

I'w tith E I E I O! Absolutely bogus. There's no need to "index" these and to do so implies they're all threaded exactly the same reference the slot and that all the holes are drilled identically and that the hull thickness is exactly the same. But I'll check our boat the next time the cover...

    rigging 19 ft.

You already have the pair of 50s and trim tabs? Major issues for me and twin engines are the requirement to get them synced exactly or the harmonics will drive me nuts, and the double maintence two engines requires. Only a few 19s around, look in the photo galleries for how some of 'em are...

    Center Window problem

On our San Juan 28 sailboat (yep, another Seattle boat on Lake Erie) we used a spring support for years. Basically a coil spring which folds to close and when open is straight and will hold the window open by locking straight with the closing force pushing straight down the coils which touch...
