    Mercury outboard 50,000 mile test

More- I remember those direct reversing Merc motors! No neutral: Ran in forward normally. For Neutral, it shuts off. For Reverse, the motor starts and ran backward! Hard to maneuver, and dangerous too! To easy to get too much rpm and abrupt movement. Probably hard on batteries. Direct...

    Mercury outboard 50,000 mile test

Wow! Memories! I had a similar boat way back when, a General Marine Speedliner, from 1957-1960, (high school years). Made it into a nice ski boat. Fiberglassed the bottom and sides myself and added a larger motor. Had been built in St. Joseph, MO, as a racing speedboat of mahogany, oak, and...
  6. Had one of these back when,(1957-1960). (This one is restored.) Made it into a nice ski boat. High school years!

    Mercury outboard 50,000 mile test

I first saw that film about 60 years ago when I was in high school or college, can't exactly remember which (!) Interesting that they had to replace the boats half way through at 25,000 miles. They appeared to be of plywood and wood frame construction with lots of glue and screws. Probably...

Saddle Tanks or Standard 23 gallon tanks

IF I WERE IN YOUR POSITION, I'D APPLY THE KISS PRINCIPLE: 1, Get the standard rear tanks in polypropylene. See how much more the ones the factory cost are than those otherwise available. If you can justify it, buy those and the slotted cover panels from them. If not, buy them elsewhere and...

LiFePO4 for house and AGM for start?

All of this is very interesting! Sounds like a fun project for a retired electrical engineer with several thousand dollars to play around with and thereby relieve the post-partum job depression blues. I knew Dr. Bob would have the best grasp of all the difficulties involved and how to...

    Will my truck pull it?

I've not done this myself, but a friend of mine added several 100-lb sacks of sand toward the rear of his van when he 1.) towed a heavy loaded boat, 2.) in windy conditions, 3.) or when he needed extra traction on the ramp, etc. As long as it doesn't make the towing vehicle under powered or...

    Thin Aluminum Skin Hull Repair

Wow! Lots of work to be done! If it were me, I'd 1.) get some quality repair estimates, and then 2.) try to settle with the insurance company, and then 3.) just buy another used boat, *unless there's some sentimental attachment to the one you have. The replacement boat would...

    SF Bay C-Brats?

Also, I lived in the Bay Area (Fremont) for 38 years from 1965-2003. I could help answer your questions, if I knew what they were. We raced small sailboats for 31 years all over the Bay and Pacific Ocean, up and down the California foothills, Oregon, and up to Puget Sound and down to San...

    SF Bay C-Brats?

Just like Seattle and several other West Coast and other US cities. Too bad there isn't another Australia to ship them (homeless/druggies) off to. (Add in all the Death Row, Lifers, and other long term prisoners we have in state and federal prisons.) AND we have them here in Redding and all...

Tomcat 24 Steps to Upper Station

As I remember, they were using the boat and the ladder to scout for, hunt, and shoot moose. Did anyone else notice the black tube used to talk between the observer/hunter above and the helmsman below? Is anybody aboard here old enough to have been on a navy or merchant ship back when that...

    Mystery water in cabin

Do you suppose it's condensation water from the daily heat cycles? The boat heats up during the day, exchanging some humid air with the outside, then cools off at night. The water in the air condenses on the cool walls and windows at night, then runs down to the floor. The next day the cycle...

    Will my truck pull it?

Not to belabor the point, but there's no greater feeling of helplessness than suddenly finding out you have to brake at a full emergency level while towing, and once you your foot on the pedal, discovering that your braking rate is far too little to get you stopped before a big collision is...

    Will my truck pull it?

Some advice from some previous discussions like this- Just remember the bigger issue is not simply towing, but stopping in a true emergency..... Thanks for everyone's contributions! Joe. :teeth :thup

    Will my truck pull it?

Add in the fact that a CD-22 with a steel trailer fully loaded for cruising for two or more weeks can weigh 4500+ lbs. The margin is shrinking! Joe. :teeth :thup

    Where to locate furnace exhaust

And, you can put a small blower facing the tube and maximize the heat exchange from the flue to the cabin air. I used two computer "muffin" fans. The blower will not only give you more heat in the cabin, but also reduce your final exhaust temperature. Joe. :teeth :thup
