How to wire a VSR to allow disabling for boat storage

Just to close the loop on this thread....... I ended up wiring the new 716 switch/VSR cluster as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Turns out there appears to be a great deal of misunderstanding regarding how a VSRs (ACRs) work, and especially how multi-output chargers work. I spent a lot...

How to wire a VSR to allow disabling for boat storage

Ferg, I think you are misunderstanding what I'm trying to do. I assume you understand that when you say "wire it to the engine side of the start battery" that is not what I'm doing. What I'm talking about correctly said is "wire it to the engine side of the start battery switch". My scheme...

How to wire a VSR to allow disabling for boat storage

Well, my plan is to do something a bit different that either of the manufacturer options you mention. I don't plan to use either a toggle switch or wire the VSR to the ignition switch. That's why I am a bit unsure about my plan. It seems to me that wiring that red wire to the engine side of the...

How to wire a VSR to allow disabling for boat storage

I'm about to install a new BEP 716-Sq-140A-Dvsr cluster of switches and VSR. The VSR has a special loop of wire that can be cut (see image below) so that one can install a toggle switch which disables the VSR totally. I want to do this so that when the boat is in storage, and on my dual output...

    Navigation Lights Are Dead

I think the only way you are going to trouble shoot this situation is to carefully measure voltages at all involved points under various conditions (i.e., switch on, switch off, etc), and then to think it thru to see "what's wrong with this picture (i.e., the voltages you found)".

Why didn't I blow my alternator??

OK, I get it now. When I turned off the start battery via the switch, I basically did the same thing as tuning off the ignition key.....so wonder the engine quit .

Why didn't I blow my alternator??

I've been analyzing the AC and DC configurations on my boat because I'm pretty sure I have some wiring errors (mostly surrounding how the batteries are configured and charged). Yesterday, I did perhaps a foolish thing. Can anyone explain it? While underway with both the starter and house...

Onboard dual bank charger and VSR issue

Yep! Ironically, Ferg's question, which I attempted to answer, has resulted in Ferg giving me the answer to a question I didn't know I had  :D :D . I realize now that I had battery isolators and VSRs (perhaps could be called a "combiner") conflated. My previous thinking on how all this...

Onboard dual bank charger and VSR issue

Ferg, I am puzzled by your use of the word "parallel". To me the use of that word means the battery banks are connected "in parallel" meaning positive to positive and negative to negative. But if I understand the function of a VSR properly, its purpose is just the opposite. That is, the VSR...

Advice on mooring my boat for the summer

Unfortunately I am not a "knowledgeable folk"; however, I've always made the assumption (perhaps wrongly) that it is best to leave the engine in its down position. I figure salt encrustation (my main worry) is likely to occur most strongly if/when the passages in the engine dry out once the salt...

Onboard dual bank charger and VSR issue

I'm not an expert, but I have a thought or two. If I'm wrong about this stuff below, someone please correct me. The VSR should only be involved with the circuit that brings amps from your engine alternator to the battery banks. The dual output charger circuits do not pass thru the VSR, but...

    Intuition to Alaska - 2021

My first time in Alaska was many, many years ago on a business trip (all travel on that trip was by airplane). My only time in Ketchikan was on that trip when I spent 3 hours in the airport waiting for a connection. I clearly remember looking out the windows as rain and wind created rivulets...
