    Smelt Update

When you see this, you know the smelt are in. The harbor seals swim up to the mouth of the Cowlitz River (approx. 80 miles upstream from the ocean). Terns cloud the sky. C.W.

    Fly Fishing and CDorys

I have not flyfished for salmon in salt water, just in rivers. Back in the 70s and 80s, we'd fish for sockeye salmon in Lake Washington using red, silver or gold U-20 flatfish at 60 or 72 ft. deep off of the downriggers in front of Stan Sayers (sp?) pits or in front of our house on the West...

    Smelt Update

We've had a lot of snow lately and water temps are cooling. Let's pray for rain, temps in the mid 40s and maybe the occasional sunny afternoon. C.W. Smelt Update Thursday – January 31, 2008 Conditions: The smelt run appears to have backed down to the estuary in response to the cold river...

    Anchor Release hookup

I agree a "breakaway anchor" should not be used for overnights. But, otherwise, they are standard practice in many areas in the PNW for daytime use. If you are not going to use them, then, as I said, be prepared to cut your whole system away and definitely, carry an entire back up system -...

    I-5 Driving Advice

Go I-5 all of the way. Allow for plenty of room for stopping distance. Keep gas tank above 1/2 full and be ready to move when passes open. Keep snacks, beef jerky & water in the rig for feeding as necessary. The pass in Northern California is the worst (near Mt. Shasta). good luck. C.W.

    Anchor Release hookup

Zipties are cheap and predictable. Use some, test it out, and adjust the number predictably and repeatedly in the future, based on conditions. Or, as you say, use stout nylon and be prepared to cut the whole thing off and count it as a loss - rope, anchor & the whole shootin' match. C.W.

    Porta-Bote, an option

Where I've seen these boats make the most sense was strapped, all folded up and compact on the side of a truck camper. Guys would drive up the mountains to a lake like Chopaka in North central WA, easily lift it off, unfold it at camp and fish as effectively as anyone with a canoe or typical...

    Tom Cat Supersized

These Pacific 3200s by Sea Sport can be had used or new. Probably beyond trailering. Can you imagine being on that flying bridge? C.W. http://www.boats.com/new-boats/seasportboats/665820/details.jsp?srh_prev=true

C-Dory Venture Series!! @ Seattle Boat Show!!!

Starcraft Tom and I asked the salesman the maximum recommended horsepower of both the Venture 23 & 26. He did not know but went to find out. The word that came back was: Venture 23 is 150 horsepower. Venture 26 is 200 horsepower. C.W.

C-Dory Venture Series!! @ Seattle Boat Show!!!

For my needs, I like the Venture 23 better than the CD 22. The bow is less upswept and the view forward is significantly better (though I'm not the one who posted that my height had influenced this). I do work from the bow of the boat often, need to get there quickly (often in chop) and...

    01/24 - 01/27 - Seattle Boat Show/C-Brat Extravaganza

It was nice meeting so many C-Brats. I greatly appreciate the boat show tickets & party provided by the factory. I even won a Stanley thermal food mug! What really came through for me was the sincere interest, care (and patience) so many had in listening to the particulars of my family's...

ODFW predicts huge Sand Shad run

While at the SBSCBGT I mentionted the Owyhee Reservoir trip. It is absolutely beautiful country. I took my family truck camping there a few years ago during our Spring Break (1st week in April). It was chilly and frosty at times - though probably better than it would be there in July or...

To buy a c-dory or not.

There was an all - aluminum "C-Dory" lookalike for sale in one of the latest Boat Trader magazines I had. It had nice lines. The hull, decks and cabin superstructure were complete and I think it had a trailer, but the interior was not done, and motors not included. I think it was 23 ft. long...

    Fishtales Decommissioning

I wonder if he was the second (or third) owner of the boat if the boat would have still been replaced? Or if the boat was 3-5 years older? What is the hull officially warrantied for? Transferable? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad this worked out. But I'm considering used boats as well. C.W.

    01/24 - 01/27 - Seattle Boat Show/C-Brat Extravaganza

Time to state the obvious.... I read through most all of the 12 pages of this post and don't know just which Hawthorn to drive to. I've already booked with Linda. Now I'm just trying to mapquest up directions to drive to there. Is it the one at the following address? 6329 South 212th...

    Luhr Jensen "Salmon Bungee"...?

Sorry about the inoperative link. This one should work and if not the same exact article, is very similar (again quoting Ramsey). http://www.gameandfishmag.com/fishing/salmon-steelhead-fishing/RA_0405_01/ When we backbounce -fish, we usually have quite a bit of line out too. I switched over...

    Luhr Jensen "Salmon Bungee"...?

I've seen them and I read the tech sheet on them from the manufacturer written by Buzz Ramsey ( http://www.luhrjensen.com/search.cfm?searchterm=salmon+bungee&search=GO ) and am cureous if anyone here has experience with them. I mainly fish salmon while anchored in a hogline in the Columbia...

To buy a c-dory or not.

Some boats I like (and can't afford) made of aluminum that my wife doesn't like: Armstrong Marine boats from Port Angeles, Wa: http://www.armstrongmarine.com/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx Maxweld Boats: http://www.maxweldboats.com/models.htm A boat we both really like (made of fiberglass) made...

    Fishing In Canadian Waters

You can buy Canadian fishing licenses online for the year, one day or somewhere in between, it is very easy and I did it last year. BUT.... the only area you can't buy an online BC fishing license for is Canadian Swiftsure. To get that one, we took the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria...
