    Should we feel violated?

Well, this thread is new to me and as a photographer, I care about it. I've taken two large groups to Costa Rica and was concerned then about people infringing on my "art" (photography) and the potential to capitalize on my hard work. So what did I do? I hoarded my photos or shared them with...

Soaring Gas Prices and Possible Gas Theft

I'd think siphoning of boat gas tanks more likely to happen when the boat is ashore and on a trailer. Especially since more thieves have cars & trucks than boats. A kicker motor would be worth more and easier to grab quickly and then turn around for sale with less suspicion. Before our marina...

You have to be carefull on the water.

the news reports I saw said it was a 14 ft. boat and one of the three men was wearing a pfd. They haven't found the third body yet. The search was called off after the first 6 hours. So, the boat being overloaded is also a possibility. The other 2 things to mention are: use the weights to...

    Anchor tests

The buoy anchor puller I use is called an Anchorlift by Ironwood Pacific. It is similar to the one Joe posted and is the most popular here. It does require that there be no knots in the anchor line whereas the ring type model might be more forgiving .... but would still hang up some // not...

    22' Cruiser vs 23' Venture

Bob, The current runs slower here around Kalama (about 35 miles downstream from Portland, OR) at about 3-6 mph. than it does upstream just below Bonneville Dam or lower down in the estuary by Astoria when the tide is ripping right.... there I don't know the speed (the little wheel that measures...

    tough economic times

Besides the economy something else will affect how many boats are sold in the future. That is falling demand. And I predict in Amercia, the demand for cruisers will drop for the same reason fewer people backpack or camp overnight (peaked in Washington in 1970s), fewer people hunt or trap...

tomcat 255 versus glacier bay 2640 renegade sx

I spent a fair amount of time in both boats at the Seattle Boat Show, but have ridden in neither. They are completely different boats. The 2640 Renegade is an open bowrider type of boat, with no galley, compared to the 255 Cruiser which is completely set up for cruising. A more comparable...

    22' Cruiser vs 23' Venture

Les, you're a perceptive guy, much like I've heard from so many here. I DO want a self bailing deck, four stroke outboard, good hull in a variety of water, and room to fish at least four guys/gals off of the stern. We want a galley and a full head is not required. Heat would be nice. As nice...

    22' Cruiser vs 23' Venture

Bob, you don't anchor stern pointing upstream in the Columbia. Boats get sucked under every year by guys trying to pull their anchor with buoy puller system stupidly tied off from the stern instead of from their bow OR they accidentally get their anchor line wrapped around a stern cleat. The...

    22' Cruiser vs 23' Venture

With a standard 3/4 ton truck trailering differences are going to be negligible, even in hills and mountains, gas mileage will be same. Big trucks generally not more expensive than the Japanese mid-sized trucks, just more challenging for some to park. They sure tow better. Storage in the...

    tying up to dock

"We were handling our lines but the neighbors were tied off. The Corps guys didn't say a word, just let the water out. Before you know it that cruiser was at about a 45 degree tilt and those folks were crammed into the low gunnel. The only thing that saved them was when the chocks pulled out of...

    Rod Holders

Once your rod holders are mounted, that will, determine the length of rod you can best carry in them. For instance, my rod holders and the space I have works best for 8'6" rods - they're mounted on the exterior of the sliding windows (I think Rapala brand, holds 4 on each side). 9' will fit...

    Anchor tests

This is the one I use and it has never let me down. I haven't weighed it, but it must be 35 or more lbs. You can see where it goes, the whole unit pivots. I lift it with a buoy/puller. C.W.

    Anchor tests

Interesting reading Bob. Here's a pic of an anchor I found and use as a backup to my big anchor. It is 22-24 lbs. 22" wide and vertical part is 26" long. It is fairly typical of anchors used here on the Columbia, though some have more tines. C.W.

    Suzuki Overheating

It always pays to be cognizant of the details.... A month ago I was fishing with a friend and I had just talked up about how much I liked my Yamaha 9.9 horsepower High Thrust kicker (circa 1992) for its reliability and don't you know I couldn't get it started. I reattached the fuel line...

    Quickie heater/genny safety decision

So Greg, how did it work out for you? We camped a couple years ago on the boat while at anchor on the Oregon side of of Sandy Island and watched "A Perfect Storm" on the laptop with the sound run through the boat's speakers..... with the gentle rocking of the boat and the sound of the breeze...
