    Simplest Navigation for 16’ C-Dory

My boat has Eagle 500C Sea Charter navigation. The arrow keys don’t work that well and the depth finder is spotty. Wondering about a new system, something simple because all I need are depth and navigation. I’m not a fisherman. Any suggestions on equipment? Thank you.

    Ballast

Thanks Bob, Sandy. I've kayaked this waters for years and know the principle. Depending on the strength and direction of the current you adjust bearing to stay on course. For some reason, I guess being a relatively novice power boater, I didn't realize the same principle applies to my C-Dory. I...

    Ballast

Thanks Bill. Our most common course is east or west across President’s Channel where the tidal current moves north or south. The ebb tide can be very strong, even on a windless day, and so to keep my bearing I have to make a lot of adjustments at the wheel to keep on course. I’m an experienced...

    Ballast

I own a 16’ C-Dory. Love the boat! But here in the San Juan Islands the currents can be fierce and the boat is light and easily “slides” with the tidal currents. I wonder if putting some ballast in the boat, a couple of 50 lb sand bags for instance, would help to stabilize. Any thoughts or...

    How to anchor 16' C-Dory

We haven't had to anchor yet, always docked our boat. But we're heading into the San Juans and may need to do so. We have an anchor in the hold space below the seating that is tied on to a heavy chain and rope, but there's no obvious way to get it to the bow other than walk along the very slim...

    C-Dory 16 ' Cruiser - 8 HP Kicker

Thanks Jason. Just what I was thinking - why a kicker at all if I’m not trolling. The main motor is a 40HP Honda, with about 200 hours, as is the 8. Both are in great shape but the 8 lists the boat to starboard and why drag all that weight around?

    C-Dory 16 ' Cruiser - 8 HP Kicker

I've bought a 16' C-Dory Cruiser with an 8HP Honda kicker. The previous owner was most interested in fishing. I'm more interested in short commuting in the San Juans and want to scale down to a smaller kicker that doesn't weigh so much or no kicker at all. Any suggestions?
