    Digital Selective Calling

A direct quote from the Navigation Center of the the US Coast Guard: Class D: Minimum DSC capability for VHF marine radios carried by recreational boaters, commercial fishing vessels, and other non-SOLAS regulated vessels. Class D required capabilities include: * Distress call *...

    Digital Selective Calling

From a bit of research it appears that the Icom 422 is not class D (I am not exactly sure what that really is) but may be pretty close if you set it up to dual or tri-watch and include Channel 70. The manual looks a little tedious but maybe with hands on it would make more sense.

Ubuntu's latest release, version 7.04 Feisty Fawn

Hi Pat, The one before (6.10) was designated Edgy. I think there are a number of updated programs, GIMP 2.2 for sure. I'm an update junkie anyway and feel compelled to have the latest and shiniest version - don't cost nuthin. BTW I will be checking out your favourite spot this month - We are...

    Digital Selective Calling

A while back I mentioned MMSI etc. What I really wanted to know but didn't (forgot to) include was: has anyone used DSC to call another vessel or received a DSC call and have that vessel's position displayed on a chartplotter? Personally, so far I have just not been motivated enough to wade...

Ubuntu's latest release, version 7.04 Feisty Fawn

I haven't logged into the shack for the longest time. I did the updt to Feisty on 19 Apr. Quite by accident I checked for updates and Feisty notifiication came through - that was @2300 or so. I prompted for upload/installation etc and when I got up and checked at 0730 it was cleaning up and...

    Boat Gun

"they frown on handguns over there" - over there being Canada. I think to be fair and to provide some balance, legally registered and held, properly transported and secured handguns are not "frowned" upon in Canada. Thousands of Canadians own handguns in compliance with existing Canadian law...

    Orca's Expedition

Maybe the location sender if not transmitting? I am dual booted for Linux and Windoze (sic) and the map viewing works in Linux but much better in Win. No location indicated in either mode. Possibly it is an OS thing.

    Table Leg Problem

I too had a rusting leg. I sawed most of the leg off below the hinge/lock mechanism, turfed it and cleaned up the part that attaches to the table. I fashioned a square wooden leg out of clear doug fir and fitted into the metal socket (drilled a SS bolt through for security). Good application...

    Oil filter on Yamaha 9.9

Just finished changing oil in my motors (100hp Yam and 9.9 Yam) along with gearcases - gotta love the smell of gear oil! My question: where is the oil filter on a 2004 Yamaha 9.9. The manual says it is in the "built into the oil pan".

    NWT Expedition 2007 update

Hi Chris, I was in Fort McMuck 20 yrs ago and it was verging on being a ghost town. How times change!!!! I also recall being in Inuvik one time on 1 Apr and the temp was -30. Another summer in Inuvik I had the opportunity to chat with a busload of German tourists (they had the bus shipped to...

Raymarine C-series owners, a must read.

NO! The drill seems to be as outlined on the Raymarine Site: Download the .zip to your computer and unzip Put a blank (fomatted) CF card into your cardreader Drag/drop the unzipped files onto the card Remove the Navionics card from your chartplotter Insert the CF card containing the unzipped...

    High Thrust Kicker

I run an high thrust '04, 9.9 Yamaha kicker (T9.9ELRC), electric start, no tiller, coupled when required by a tie bar to my main. It seemed logical to go high thrust, to me anyway - I had a high thrust on a sailboat at one time. Mine is a 20" shaft. I don't fish/troll, it is primarily my...

My New Inflatable Needs a Motor, But Which One ?

I solicited the Brats ((Outboards and systems - Honda BF2) a while back. I powered my Avon inflatable with a 2hp, 2 stroke (22lb) Yamaha which was ten years old and ran flawlessly. I could see maintenance looming (new impeller $20 and carb kit $80). I put it on Craigslist and it was snapped...

    MMSI

The big buzz last spring was MMSI and all its wonderful capabilites when coupled with VHF and a chartplotter. Did anyone ever use it (or figure it out) to any practical advantage? Cheers - Dave

    King Trailer with bunks

From much correspondence on this site over the years it seems the ideal tongue weight is between 5 and 10%, heavier being better I believe. As for axle position (the fulcrum) to achieve this elusive ideal tongue weight/trailer handling - well, it seems if you can answer the "meaning of life"...

    Mouse on a C-Dory

I use scotchbrite pads in the cableway holes to the cabin under the gunwales. Just wrap around the cable(s) and slide into the hole. I don't think mice or rats find the material appetizing and it won't rust. Cheers - Dave

    Wallace vs. Stock

Just for the record I paid just over $1500(US) for a Wallas model 85DU from Scan Marine. This is the model with the blower lid. The total with exhaust tube, through-hull, fuel tank and pot holders was just over $1700. It is a snap to install and has given me trouble free operation. Cheers - Dave

    Windows operating system

I was briefly introduced to Linux by a nerd (who shall remain un-named). I have my computer dual-booted for Linux, (Ubuntu 6.10) and WinXP. It's a free operating system that I installed myself on my computer and I use Linux most of the time (as in right now). It gives the best of all worlds...
