What happens to your outboard when you ride thru the oil. Does it mess up the water pump? Other damage?

The spill is threatening our beautiful barrier islands in Mississippi. We spend most of our boating time on these islands (Cat, Ship, Horn, and Petit Bois). I can't imagine losing our playground.

I have tried this is the past, but had a problem with the lights not lasting all night. They do give a soft glow while they are lit. I did not use them in a high traffic area.
