    Garmin Bluechart/G2/Vision Compatibility

I checked my 545 out this evening and found that the base charts (if I remove my card) are very sketchy in Canada. While there is basic coverage of the Strait of Georgia toward Nanaimo, the waters among the Gulf Islands (through Active Pass) are not covered. In Ontario, the Great Lakes passage...

    Garmin Bluechart/G2/Vision Compatibility

The cards that cover Harrison Lake are on these links: http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/g2vi ... onPK=25509 http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/g2vi ... onPK=25508 I have the VCA501L and it definitely has full coverage of Harrison Lake. No Interior Lakes (Okanagan, Arrow or Kootenay) though.

    Garmin Bluechart/G2/Vision Compatibility

I'll try and check it out today. I doubt that the basemap covers Harrison Lake but the Vision cards do. I take my boat out there often-- my G2 Vision card is for the whole BC Coast (cost $450, though you can get cards for smaller areas for $350). I believe the basemap just includes NOAA US...

    Garmin Bluechart/G2/Vision Compatibility

I phoned Garmin support today (35 minutes on hold) and they apologetically told me that Garmin's 2008 models only support G2 Vision cards-- not the vanilla G2 cards or Bluechart cards. That is a real bummer for Canadian purchasers or travelers whose areas are not included in the US basemap. We...

    Garmin Bluechart/G2/Vision Compatibility

Just to clarify, I don't need to know about my particular unit. I just want to know if the new Garmin Vision-compatible units can use the older charts as well. Thanks.

    Garmin Bluechart/G2/Vision Compatibility

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 545s chartplotter/sounder. I bought a G2 Vision card for my local area and it is working fine. I am going to the Great Lakes this summer and want to get a card for the Georgian Bay area but I wanted to get the cheaper BlueChart or G2 card because I will probably only go...

Which models would they fit? A 16? Do you have an inside diameter for the wheel center?

    detuned outboards

I never quite understood the rationale behind a manufacturer producing two outboards with the same displacement but different power ratings (eg Honda 40/50). What do they do to change the power? How do they make the lower power unit cheaper? Under what circumstances would you use one as opposed...

    V-Berth Storage

Wow, judging from your pics, they sure do a sloppy job of putting in the foam. Or is that an average quality job? Seems like its filled about 50%.

    low power C-Dory/ Marinaut

Lots of information here. My conclusion is that a 40 or 50 will plane the boat fairly easily when properly propped, but with very little reserve power. It seems like a 70 is a sensible minimum. It also seems that the difference in gas mileage will be negligible: that any engine is going to...

Seeking advice as we plan our first trip into Canadian water

Well, not wanting to argue about it, but I live up here. There is one ferry to Egmont (and a pleasant ride it is). The traffic through Vancouver is really only a problem at rush hour, 3pm to about 6pm. It's not like the traffic through a really large city like Seattle. And finally when I went to...

Seeking advice as we plan our first trip into Canadian water

In my opinion, the best launch for Louisa is from Egmont which is just east of Earl's Cove (you just need one ferry and a further hour drive). There are two ramps, one west of town at a Marina/campground with limited parking and one in town. Both are above Skookumchuck, so no tidal rapids. From...

Seeking advice as we plan our first trip into Canadian water

The drive to Lund involves 2 ferries: one from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale which gives access to the Sechelt Peninsula, then Earl's Cove to Saltery Bay which gets you to Powell River and Lund. There is no way to drive there without the ferry.

    low power C-Dory/ Marinaut

I have always thought that the enrichment of the air/fuel mixture is about the same in any outboard so your fuel use will be related to displacement x rpm. I guess that is saying more or less the same thing, as the horsepower extracted from the fuel is equivalent. But a larger motor running at...

    low power C-Dory/ Marinaut

There must be several factors that affect the performance of a single twin. An extra 250 pounds hanging off the stern, drag from the unused motor skeg, inefficiency of a motor mounted off-center, etc. As far as twin 40's or a single 75 being the minimum, I can see that being a good match for...

    boating with liquid gold

So here's a question. If fuel was to triple in price, how would that affect your boating lifestyle? It's not out of the realms of possibility in the next ten years. Would you give up boating? cut back other things in your life? buy a sailboat? trade in your tow vehicle or your outboard? Would...

    low power C-Dory/ Marinaut

I have been thinking about my future retirement boat and really like the looks of Toland's new design (if it comes to fruition). I am also mindful of the general upward trend in oil prices, despite the current low price. I am wondering how a low-power engine on one of these boats, or a...

    Honda 50 alternator solution?

Is there any way to upgrade the anemic performance of the 10 amp alternator? I note that the new 50 EFI models have a 22 amp alternator while the 75 EFI puts out 44 amps.
