    porta potty privacy

A "delicate subject." My wife and I have no problem using the porta potty on long cruises on our 16 Cruiser. A couple of times I have taken friends for short day trips and told them to use the facilities before departure. Has anyone tried some sort of arrangement for privacy when using the...

    Radar Reflectors

It is designed to reflect signals from all directions around its long axis, but not signals originating along its axis. It is assumed that when it is hanging your angle of heel will be fairly small. A unit mounted horizontally will sometimes experience signals close to its long axis which it is...

    Radar Reflectors

Two issues: 1. The device has to be accurately constructed to be effective in reflecting signals back to their source; a few degrees off in the construction of the 3d corners will render it ineffective. 2. To be most effective, Davis reflectors should be mounted in the "catch rain" position...

    Porta Potti

Returning to the original post which initiated this thread, my understanding is that porta-potties are no longer permitted in Ontario.

    Foolish Mistakes 101

Thought I would ask about the most common mistakes boaters make. I would start with the obvious ones: 1. Leaving the transom plug out. I've done it twice. The second time I went to park the car and came back to six inches of water. I couldn't understand why the bilge pump wasn't bailing the...

    Fixed tanks for 16 Cruiser

I carry a 12 and two 6's usually (24 gal) all in the stern, but I have no kicker. I also have a Permatrim and find the trim is pretty good. For my plans next summer in Haida Gwaii, I am going to need another 6 gal (160 nm journey) which is getting a little crowded in the splashwell along with...

    Fixed tanks for 16 Cruiser

In the quest for a 375 km range (200 nm) for extended adventures and less weight astern, I am researching a pair of saddle tanks for my 16 Cruiser. None of the Moeller tanks fit so I am thinking of having aluminum tanks made with dimensions of about 56"L x 6"W (bot)/8"W (top) x 12"H. to hold...

Plastic Crates For Storing Rope on the Bow

Milk crates also come in a sort of double size, but they are harder to find for sale. You might have to "repurpose" one from a milk company.

    Volcanic Glass

Aren't they still going around 160mph on an average landing? Sticking my head out the window of a car going 80 just about takes my breath away... I guess that's better than endangering 400 passengers. I'd hate to get a bug in my eye at that speed. :)

    Volcanic Glass

That would give you quite the mullet, if you put your head out the window of a plane travelling at 200-600 mph! :wink I think they said the pilot had to stand up and look through one of the angled off-center windows which was not so badly obscured...

    Using the compass or not?

I've had my GPS "fail" twice in awkward situations. One was a Garmin GPSMAP 178s that suddenly went blank on me. I think it was a momentary electric failure rather than a GPS circuitry failure, as it restarted OK. The second time I was in the SW entrance to Active Pass with a Garmin 545s and I...

    Water separator and sunlight

I was about to install a Sierra fuel filter (similar to Racor) in the splashwell in preparation for a trip to a unreliable fuel zone when I read that the filter should be installed away from direct sunlight. How important is this? I have seen lots of these installed in the splashwell, which...

    PLB recommendations

I just ordered an ACR Aqualink PLB and I understand they make a good product. I didn't pick the new McMurdo FastFind because I thought it didn't have GPS, but I now realize it includes GPS in a smaller, cheaper unit than the Aqualink. Any recommendations?
