    Solar Engines on a Boat

Off topic, but: I was wondering about the possibility of running a boat like a plug in hybrid, especially for cruising. You've got a multipurpose generator that can charge house and cruising batteries, and an electric drive prop connected to the cruising bank. The generator starts/stops based...

    outa juice?

Comments and opinions like this aren't very useful in my opinion. Are you assuming everyone here is like minded, or are you trying to stir things up? Back on topic, just because the infrastructure doesn't yet exist everywhere doesn't mean we should stop trying. I'd bet the first automotive...

    outa juice?

The Tesla Model S comes with 3 battery capacities, 85kWh, 60kWh and 40kWh, with 265 mi, 208 mi, and 160 mi ranges respectively. The 40kWh model is $57,500, the 60kWh is $10k more, and the 85kWh is another $10k. When you consider that these cars are in the same segment with BMW 5/6 series, Audi...

Seeking input on fair price for Wallas 95

Our boat came with an Origo alcohol stove, not meant for heating. At this point our only source of heat would be an electric heater while on shore power. I do think, however, that given the choice, I would pick a boat with a diesel heater unit and an alcohol stove over an all in one unit. So...

    Sunbeam ~ C-Dory 22 Cruiser

That's makes a lot of sense! I really like these hatches, but as you mentioned it would have been nice if they had made it so you could separate the lid after they were installed. Do you have any ideas for the old hatches? Maybe V-berth storage access?

    Sunbeam ~ C-Dory 22 Cruiser

Excellent job and write up! I changed my hatches, but had small enough openings to make do without having to do fiberglass. I've managed to not do any glass work so far, but I want to soon! Our camper back stops at the forward edge of the splash well, so there's no interference with the hatch...

    shore power ?

The breaker I used in my thread was a Blue Sea 1214 360 Series: http://www.reddenmarine.com/blue-sea-1214-ac-panel-main-2-position-120v.html I think it cost $160 where I got mine. It is very compact, has breakers on both hot and neutral (in case of bad marina wiring), has a reversed polarity...

Another arc at the shore power plug

Are you sure you got the "kit" for $120 and not just the inlet? When I just checked it was $191 for the kit with the inlet AND plug.

Sea Dory Company --is it failing

We saw the 23 Venture at the boat show and were very impressed. I can't remember what it was specifically, but I really liked the design of the cockpit, motor well, hatches, transom, etc. vs. our 22.

    shore power ?

Find the backside of the shore power inlet, and see where the wires go. If they go straight to outlets, then it's not up to code, and you may want to consider installing a breaker panel for safety. Otherwise, you'll hopefully find the panel! Here's my shore power install thread...

Sea Dory Company --is it failing

I met one of the new owners of Triton at the SBS, in the area that had the 3 Sea Sports and a 23 Venture. Can't remember his name, but it sounds like the Lindhouts sold Triton. C-Dory production is going strong in Ferndale. In other news, what is Sea Dory?

    Rule Automatic Bilge Pump

The pump I'd most recommend now after installing one is a Johnson Ultima field sensing one (like this: http://www.boatersplus.com/john-1250gph-ultima-bilge-pump.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse&utm_content=EB-6032626&utm_campaign=google). It senses water through the case in two locations...

    Windshield wiper push button install

Maybe I'm just tall or something, but reaching for the lower panel switches makes me have to lean forward a bit. Also, since I'd have to feel around either way, having braille bumps on the switches wouldn't be that much quicker than just memorizing the switch positions, counting from the bottom...

    Rule Automatic Bilge Pump

Just un-clip it from the basket and turn it upside down while it's still wired up. Or dump a lot of water in your bilge!

    Windshield wiper push button install

Adding these extra switches did not disable the switches on the panel. And the panel switches can still be used for continuous wiping. There are other Blue Sea switches with the same form factor that allow for momentary or continuous.

    Windshield wiper push button install

It's still a PITA to reach down next to your knee and find the switch, even with the beads on there. I did this project in less than an hour, and for less than $20, so other than drilling holes in the boat, I don't see a problem. :)

    Windshield wiper push button install

Just to clarify (since it was worded confusingly), the power and 'activate' wires aren't spliced to each other! They each get a pigtail spliced to them, and the pigtails connect to the switch with crimped spade connectors. The switch bridges the power and switch connectors. Also, I'm not...

    Windshield wiper push button install

I've been meaning to post about this for a while, but in late December, when it was way to cold to do a wiring project, I decided to do a wiring project. The wiper controls on our 22 are on the main house panel down by the driver's right knee, and using the wipers during intermittent rain in...
