    Seastar Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Thanks for the support, folks. I got the new cylinder today, and test-fit it. I LIKE the compact format they've adopted. The cylinder is exactly the right length, with about 1/4 leftover on each end when the engine pivots to it's mechanical stops. The instructions for my engine specify inverting...

    Seastar Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Part is ordered. Disassembly proceeding well. By the way, there sure are a LOT of ways to sprinkle hydraulic fluid onto the clothing one's wife warned one not to wear while working on the boat. Look ma! No steering!

    Seastar Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

OK, so there ARE some little hairline scratches in the chrome surface of the ram. Everybody says my seal replacement will be a short-term fix. And not cost effective when the "seal kit" cost me almost $100 and a brand new entire cylinder assembly is only about $300. I'm going to replace the...

    Seastar Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Thanks Jack. Here's a picture of the end that's leaking. Let me ask a noob question: Is there some clever way to replace the wiper and shaft seal WITHOUT taking the entire end gland apart from the cylinder? I ask because there's a tiny hole in the bottom of the end gland, opposite the side...

    Seastar Hydraulic Cylinder Repair

Took Two Lucky Fish +1 out for a little shakedown today. Launched in the Ballard ship canal and crossed the channel to Fisherman's Terminal. The point was to "Launch, Run, & Retrieve", hoping everything worked right. Great day for it; it ain't often we get 85° in April! So all went well, except...

    01/29 - 01/31 - Seattle Boat Show 2016

Sorry we didn't make it out there. Our 17- year-old cat Tiki passed away this evening, so it's good we were home.

    01/29 - 01/31 - Seattle Boat Show 2016

I'll be around the show at some point today, but not at dinner tonight. Some Two Lucky Fish + 1 contingent will appear at dinner Saturday, but it's tough to know just who. Thanks for organizing, Susan!

    Columbia River

See, that's kinda what I've been thinking. One of the storage lot guys said "There's a time limit at the ramp? The locals park there as long as they want, as far as I can tell." And yeah, I thought about truck stops or just parking it along a street with some traffic and visibility. Would love...

    Columbia River

Super-helpful, folks. Thanks a bunch. I love exploring little nooks and crannies in Two Lucky Fish, and I've only shaved the tip off a propeller blade once in all these years. :-) I'm trying to figure out where to park for a week in The Dalles. The Port of The Dalles discourages me from just...

    Columbia River

Anyone mind if I hijack this thread? No, I thought not. :-) I'm planning a cruise DOWNSTREAM for next summer. I grew up boating on the Columbia near Portland, and I'm fascinated with the idea that you can go from Lewiston, Idaho to the Pacific Ocean on the Snake and Columbia Rivers. So for...

We'll be there Friday, but too late to join for dinner.

What are our Friday dinner plans, if any? I'm not really sure what the options are, to be honest. Is Downrigger's back?

Johnson (Suzuki) 90: Another midsection corrosion failure

I should point out that the NEW corrosion on the NEW (2008) Engine Holder casting (the one WITHOUT the troublesome inspection port/plug...the port cast shut as monolithic aluminum) does NOT have corrosion at that site. I'm seeing corrosion elsewhere in the casting. I'll post pictures when I get...

Johnson (Suzuki) 90: Another midsection corrosion failure

Hoo-boy. Got a call from Jacobsen's today. They wanted me to look at the Engine Holder casting. The one we replaced in 2008 because of corrosion around that inspection port? The one I talked about in the other thread back in 2008? THAT one! So I stopped by to look. It has corrosion...not enough...

Johnson (Suzuki) 90: Another midsection corrosion failure

I thought about trying to replace it myself. It's just bolts, after all. Well, it's bolts, plus supporting the engine while it's disassembled from the pivot, and not accidentally dropping the entire thing onto my driveway and having it break into a million pieces. So yeah...Jacobsen's can do it...
