    Wisconsin and Northern Michigan

Concur with all the comments on the UP. Gas just dropped below $4/gal today. This weekend is Seafood Fest (Rotary fund raiser) in Houghton (gateway to the Keweenaw). All next week is Finn Fest celibrating the regions Finnish heritage. Finn Fest is scheduled every 3 to 5 years (I think) by a...

    Blister update

Thanks for the update, I appreciate it. Nice to get a job done at half of what it might have been and better yet no structural damage. Jay

Anyone done a dinette bed modification?

DuckDogTitus yes I've slept there. I got two large hinged topped plastic storage bins at Home Depot (I think). They are a perfect fit across the stern with a shim under them at the centerline of the boat to level them. They do make the cockpit rather small but work great as a bench and for...

    All about propellers

I have twin 40 Hondas with dolfins and trim tabs. I started with a Solas 3 blade aluminum 13" pitch (not sure of dia) my first season. The next year I switched to a Solas 4 blade alum 12" pitch x 10.8 dia. and ran them for 7 yrs. Then a Solas 4 blade alum 11" pitch x 11.1" dia. for 5 years. I...

    Boarding/Swim Ladder

I started with an aluminum big hook (hooks over the whole gunnel, no mounting brackets) three step and got tired of trying to get my foot on the lowest step which was about nose level when in the water. I got a telescoping 4 step ss Garlick (also big hook) and it's much easier to get on from the...

Wax on the foredeck textured areas?

Woody wax works for me; easy to apply and does the job. I know West Marine sells it. Jay

    Seat height

I raised mine about 2 inches with 3 boards (1.5 x 2) and a cover on the isle side so I have a small storage space for manuals. Also refoamed the seat as I also bottomed out and I'm only 170 pounds; first I got "high density" foam at JoAnn's and it made no difference. Then I took it to an...

    LED Nav Lights

Running lights: I use LEDs for saftey; they last forever and have no filaments to break from pounding when at sea or on a trailer as others have said. Mine broke way too often. Anchor light: I use an LED for saftey and low electrical draw. If you doubt your plastic fesnel lens is effective do...

    Porta potties in Ontario

Nick and Rollie, thanks for the input; your comments are encouraging; it's looking like a porta potti will work, I'll just keep it below the radar, out of sight and be a prudent boater (as usual). Jay

    Porta potties in Ontario

Thanks for the tip and article. However, I plan on trailering into and out of Canada. Also in the past on Lake Superior I used a RABCs which is a remote area border crossing permit by Canada valid from Lake of the Woods to and through Lake Superior; it's pretty handy in you don't have to check...

    Porta potties in Ontario

Will-C, I'm with you on the law; what a stupid law; we dump the potti at toilets, privies or at a dug hole in the woods (which hasn't been necessary yet). The law is only an Ontario law so you shouldn't have any problem in NB. Moose, MNR? Thanks for the feed back but I would also like to hear...

    Porta potties in Ontario

Barry, Thanks for checking with Boating Ontario (whoever they are); good to know what they say but I imagine we'll get the legal answer - no porta potties. What I'm looking for is whether the DNR or OPP or whoever is enforcing it or ignoring it. In other words what are boaters' experiences. Jay

    Porta potties in Ontario

I'm planning on cruising Georgian Bay and the North Channel this summer. Ontario has some sort of prohibition of porta potties on it's Great Lakes waters. Between 2003 and 2007 we cruised Lake Superior's north shore and the pp was not an issue but I've since got the impression that is no longer...

    3M 4200

Aluminum foil is a better barrier at the cap than a cling wrap. Plastic is far more porous than metal. I've had a tube of 4200 last three years using al foil without using the freezer but now I use the freezer too. Jay

Source for square drive screws around interior window frames

I got some from Diamond Sea Glaze which is Canadian, of course. Harbor Marine sounds sounds less complicated, no customs, tax issues. Jay

    warped cabin door

My 2002 CD-22 had the bottom opening corner of the door ("starboard" or plastic)warped out about a half inch. I could easily get it bent to eliminate the gap by blocking the door open above the gap with a 2x4 and wedging a long 2x4 against the stern and the bottom corner of the door, leaving the...

    Brass porthole install

Isn't the raised part of the v-berth called the "trunk" or "raised trunk" or "raised deck"? I don't believe it's any part of the cabin. Let's get nautical here. Jay
