Poor mans AK adventure or, captain license blog, the sequel

Thanks for the synopsis! I'm surprised they ordered the Almar that way. Almar's are all custom made so they should have been able to customize it the way they wanted it. NR now owns Almar. So I believe the 30' North River is actually an Almar but done in a cookie cutter way. Where as you can...

Has anyone been fishing salmon in the lower Snohomish River?

Beartrack, People on Gamefishin.com have been hitting the Snoho for the last couple weeks and doing well. I think I might take the sled up there this afternoon myself. Good luck if you went!

Poor mans AK adventure or, captain license blog, the sequel

Ken, What were your thoughts on the ChilKat? Did you end up liking it? Or were the other boats in the fleet better? Also, did you get a chance to do any time in the North River? I know a few people down here that just love their NR Offshores. I know I have really enjoyed my old NR Sled. As I...

Poor mans AK adventure or, captain license blog, the sequel

Ken, Sounds like you had an AWESOME summer! I envy you! However, I don't know that I would want to be a guide as that would likely take my enjoyment out of the fishing. Hopefully I can join you up there next summer for a week or so. We'll have to see! I used to love to Ski. At the tender age...

    Replacing steering system

I would imagine that you could make a pump out of a garden sprayer that would work just as well for a lot less money :)

    CB radio quit.......again

I'm not surprised that the mic went bad. I used to have to have them repaired on a fairly regular basis when I was running the Assistance Van and using the radio for hours on end. The mic would last about 6 months. The radio's were usually fine for a year or two at most before having to replace...

    GPS Fish Finder Combo Suggestions

Tom, I'm pretty sure you have to have an LCX series Lowrance to have the "playback" feature. But having used it during the Lowrance training at the Sportsmans show last year it is some pretty neat stuff! To play it back you can download the free "Emulator"for the LCX 112 (or just about any LCX...

    Floating dinghy dock

The ones I helped build when I was a kid (read about between 8 and 10) were made out of treated 2x8's on the sides with treated 2x6's for the decking. The foam blocks were simply held in place by tension with the 2x8's and the weight of the docks. I think you would find that the plywood would...

    Dead Battery - ???

Thanks Bob. Yeah, this has the 1, 2, All, Off Perko switch on it already. But since I'm going to have to rewire the hole engine compartment anyway I wanted to move the batteries out of the engine compartment and up into some box seats on the deck. So I would have room to put 2 Group 27...

    Dead Battery - ???

ACH! Never mind. I forgot that you had twin outboards VS my single inboard/outboard. Thus you have 1 battery for each motor plus your House. What I'm trying to do is to run 2 starter batteries for my main engine plus 2 house batteries. So 1 battery for the engine is primary and 1 is secondary...

    Dead Battery - ???

Thanks Mark. So in looking at this photo it looks like you added an extra VSR and battery switch. Do you have a wiring diagram of how you wired it up? I was thinking of that but if the second VSR and switch aren't needed then I would prefer not to purchase them as they are spendy indeed.

    Dead Battery - ???

I'm bringing this back up to the top as I am currently looking at getting one of these switch panels. Correct me if I'm wrong but according to the wiring diagram posted on the BEP site the correct operation of this is to turn the Start and House battery ON and leave the Parallel switch off...

    Seward, Alaska 08-26-07 40#Ling & 18# yelloweye

I've read several posts on other boards where guys put a milk crate upside down on the down rigger and push the rockfish into the milkcrate and lower them down with the downrigger. Supposedly that reduces mortality to less than 10%. Just going down 33ft would likely suffice to reduce the swim...

    Semi-Maiden voyage!

I have to agree with Sarge! I've been working far too long on getting my motor fixed for the 27' and here you put that top together in a weekend! Sheesh! Of course, 20 years ago I would have had the boat running by now. But I wouldn't have been able to afford the parts back then! Can't win I...

    Humminbird Fish Finders

Warren, If you have the E-80 then you need the SeaTalk HS cable. On this Page you can go to the "E-Series Product Tour" link. And on the second page after the intro you can see how the network would need to be done. If you have the C Series unit then you can't network the units at all...

    Luhr Jensen "King" Manual Downrigger

Actually Pat, The net I was going to loan you is my "smaller" net as it is just sitting in the garage while I use the Frabil. The Frabil is a knotless net and the hooks don't stick to it ( YEAH! ). The other net is the one I used for the 4 years previous to having the Frabil and it works fine...

    Puget Sound Pink Salmon

Tom, I use the Dry brine as Bill does. However I never measure it. What I do is to lay out the fish skin side down in the glass caserole (I like a deep one for this but shallow also works). Once I have the whole bottom of the dish covered with fish I heavily cover it with the Non-Iodized...
