    New engine maintenance

tsturm is correct but the use of a specifically designed lower unit gear lube has additives that help protect against corrosion and wear for the lower unit on an outboard motor. A quote I found on-line and one that I agree with is: "the most common and recommended type is SAE 90 gear oil. This...

    22 Cruiser of 23 Venture

When our boat was built, the Venture Sport models were made with balsa and the Venture was made with high density foam. This year in speaking with Michael Millison (VP of Operations) from the factory, they will be switching to high density foam in all new C-Dory boats including the Cruiser...

    New engine maintenance

I have been using Quicksilver Marine Gear Lube SAE 90 GL-4 in my 2017 Suzuki 140 for about 6 years now. Until recently, I discovered that Suzuki recommends that I use GL-5 for my motor. I will now switch to GL-5. The lube I am referring to in the link below says, "Meets API GL-4" requirements...

Need Help with Venture 23 Boat Lift Bunk Specs/Hull Deadrise

Hi Bob, The degree measurements I was referring to was only pertaining to the surface area of the bottom of the hull as it rested on the 12 ft. long 2 x 6 carpeted bunk. The 4 degree deadrise was measured while I was sitting on the concrete floor at the transom looking forward and this applied...

    C-BRATS 2026 Calendar - Requesting Your Photos!

Received an e-mail from Julie today. She says, "They are slowly trickling in, but I think it's a perfect pace for where we are in the year. Especially because we are still in the beginning of the boating season." Thank you to those who have sent in photos so that we may have a 2026...

Need Help with Venture 23 Boat Lift Bunk Specs/Hull Deadrise

....or if this helps...The bottom bunks are 12' x 6 " and separated 32" apart at the transom, having a 4 degree deadrise. The bottom of the hull remain totally flat at 0 degrees up to about 7' where the angle increases in about 1 degree increments up to about 4 degrees at the end of the 12'...

Daydream SOLD - Welcome Adam Lucke

The Lucke family now can continue the legacy with Daydream hopefully as long as both you and Patty have owned her. Many folks refer on-line about your blog doing the entire Great Loop and the information that it affords for its entirety. We appreciate all of your contributions to C-Brats over...

on my 22 I have the whole Gamut of lines

....earlier I mentioned tying a spring line to a midship cleat on the dock for a final tie. What I meant was, tie from the aft and forward dock cleat to the midship cleat on the C-Dory. Normally, the boats stern and bow cleat do not match up to the cleats on the dock. You may then need extra...

on my 22 I have the whole Gamut of lines

Just saw your post Don. If your bow and stern lines are long enough, you can continue with their length to a midship cleat on the dock for a final tie. This will keep your boat from going forward and backward while attached to the dock and keep your vessel locked in and secure for the night with...

on my 22 I have the whole Gamut of lines

Hi Don. Like Tom, we like to have two bow lines that are permanently attached to the forward cleat, one port and one starboard. We tie the bitter end off at the rear cabin hand holds. Remember, when conditions are bad and you are being blown away from the dock, you don't want your mate in the...

    GL-4 and GL-5 gear oil?

Thank you Bob. I will switch back to the Suzuki GL-5 gear oil. I have read that GL-5 has twice the amount of sulfur and phosphorous when compared to GL-4. The sulfur is corrosive to copper, brass and bronze (yellow metals) and that is why it is not recommended in earlier motors.

    Is it worth up grading

Earlier today, I was looking at your post and wondering what weight/load you run normally with your C-Dory. With your normal use, are you able to keep the rpm between 5000 and 6000 rpms? If so, you are properly propped for your boating use. If not, I would try a smaller prop because you may be...

    GL-4 and GL-5 gear oil?

For the past 6 years, I have been using marine Quicksilver/Mercury SAE 90 Gear Lube for my annual lower unit gear oil changes. I recently noticed that this oil is rated GL-4. The manufacturer states that this oil is good for all outboard motor lower units. Today, I noticed that the Suzuki Marine...

    Wavve App

We use Windy for going out of Newport, Or. and have found it to be very accurate but in the San Juans and Gulf Islands, not! NOAA buoy reports for swells/wave height are the most comforting in PNW Strait crossings and when the wind shows 10 knots or less.

    C-BRATS 2026 Calendar - Requesting Your Photos!

Thanks Colby and good job! I will check in with Julie at NMI in a couple of weeks to see how many folks are sending in their C-Dory photos. It is OK to send one photo per e-mail when taken with a cell phone in landscape mode for higher quality. Julie has told me that she will save and store all...

    Left Speechless

Hi Ken. Glad to see that you are enjoying your time on Sjohest. Looked at your album and was amazed at how close that Orca got to your boat. One photo shows him or her turning their head to check you out. It was fun spending time with you and Stacie at the Friday Harbor gathering and to finally...

    C-BRATS 2026 Calendar - Requesting Your Photos!

Good Questions Colby! Let me answer them as best I can. Note that I’ve never selected the photos. Julie does that. Harvey has helped her in the past. Q1: What specifically are we looking for? Or what don't we want? Boats out of the water on their trailers? I've got a number of shots with...
